Background

Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) affects about 13 million under-five children (U5), with an estimated one million dying every year. In this study we aimed at determining the in hospital mortality and its associated factors among U5s admitted with SAM.

Methods

This was a prospective cohort study of children 6 months to 5 years with SAM admitted at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) between June and August 2015. Care-takers were interviewed to collect socio-demographic and clinical information. Individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) struggle with effective self-management, contributing to poor health outcomes and costly health care. More research is needed to understand the factors influencing COPD self-management better in order to improve outcomes and reduce health care costs for those living with this prevalent chronic illness. Anesthesia Machine Failure: A Case Study, Molly Condit, Paula Hafeman

This article examines successful management of an anesthesia machine failure with the Draeger (or Dräger) Apollo (Draeger Inc) anesthesia workstation. Approximately 45 minutes into the case, while the patient was under general anesthesia and mechanical ventilation, the anesthesia machine failed to achieve positive pressurization following a high-pressure alarm. Despite multiple maneuvers, the issue did not resolve until the machine was manually powered off and on at the main power switch. This case report emphasizes the importance of always having a backup means of patient ventilation and anesthesia administration.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) remain a growing global health issue and sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is no exception. Using secondary data obtained from the World Bank on 48 SSA countries, we describe the trends in the proportionate mortalities attributed to NCDs in SSA between 2000 and 2016. The baseline proportionate mortalities attributed to NCDs in SSA increased from 22.49% in 2000 to 33.69% in 2016, representing about 11% increase. The trend was replicated across the low-, middle-, and high-income countries in SSA. Evolution of optical technology from two-dimensional to three-dimensional (3D) systems has come with an associated loss of stereoscopy and 3D depth perception. This report compares performance of surgical tasks in unbiased subjects using these systems.

Methods

Untrained subjects were randomized into two groups, robotically operated video optical telescopic-microscope (ROVOT) or surgical microscope (microscope). Subjects sutured and tied knots. Completion time, NASA-Task Load Index (TLX), and galvanic skin responses were analyzed.

Results

Using paracrine potential of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) provides a useful clinical approach in treating inflammatory diseases. Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a benign, self-limiting histiocytosis of unknown etiology. The classic form of the condition includes a painless cervical lymphaenopathy [sic] accompanied by fever, weight loss and an elevated ESR. Extra nodal RDD (ENRDD) is most frequent in the head and neck. Thirty-eight cases of ENRDD have been described. Seven cases of ENRDD were identified in our pathology biopsy services. To examine the psychometric properties of the nine-item Antepartum Gastrointestinal Symptom Assessment (AP-GI-SA) instrument.

Design

Single-group prospective design.

Setting

Urban prenatal clinic serving a diverse population.

Participants

Convenience sample of 45 pregnant women.

Methods

Participants completed the AP-GI-SA before a scheduled prenatal care appointment. We used Bayesian structural equation modeling to evaluate the construct validity of the scale and assessed known-groups validity. We assessed reliability through maximal reliability coefficient estimate and measured internal consistency with Cronbach’s alpha coefficient.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of the Engaging Parents in Education for Discharge (ePED) iPad application on parent experiences of hospital discharge teaching and care coordination. Hypotheses were: parents exposed to discharge teaching using ePED will have 1) higher quality of discharge teaching and 2) better care coordination than parents exposed to usual discharge teaching.
