The History & Status Of The Impact Act, Lisa M. Grabert

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

The ability to effectively study and compare Medicare patients—and the cost and outcomes associated with their care—has long been, and continues to be limited, by the lack of readily comparable, patient-level, clinical data. This is due primarily to Medicare’s reliance and use of historically-developed, and limited administrative data—data derived from traditional insurance claims records, not patient treatment records. Critics of this situation have long called for the development of more comprehensive patient-level and clinically focused data, particularly in support of increasing efforts to compare and promote higher quality of care in the system.

Calls to develop more comprehensive patient outcome …

Biomedical austenitic stainless steel (ASTM F2581) has been processed by the powder metallurgy technology using binder assisted extrusion method and aside a sintering aid. The resultant microstructure was examined by optical microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction methods. The optical microscopy images indicate that using the binder and sintering aid considerably decreases the porosities of the sintered samples. The x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy images reveal that the microstructure of the sintered alloy consists of austenite in nanocrystalline form and amorphous phases. The mechanical properties were measured through compressive tests. The mean yield …

If Not Otitis Externa...Then What?, Elizabeth A. Flasch, Sadia Ansari, Timothy Martin

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Ear pain is one of the most common presentations in urgent care, especially among pediatric patients. Further, acute otitis media (AOM) is the most common condition for which antibacterial agents are prescribed for children in the United States. Clinician visits make up 634 per 100 children during 2005-2006. It is imperative that clinicians differentiate AOM from new onset of otorrhea not due to acute otitis externa (AOE), the most common diagnoses made by clinicians with regional variations based on age and geography.1

The majority of AOE-related visits occur during the summer months (June through August); visits occur most commonly in …

Vasopressin Regulates Daily Rhythms And Circadian Clock Circuits In A Manner Influenced By Sex, Kayla Rohr, Adam Telega, Alexandra Savaglio, Jennifer A. Evans Jan 2021

Vasopressin Regulates Daily Rhythms And Circadian Clock Circuits In A Manner Influenced By Sex, Kayla Rohr, Adam Telega, Alexandra Savaglio, Jennifer A. Evans

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Arginine vasopressin (AVP) is a neurohormone that alters cellular physiology through both endocrine and synaptic signaling. Circadian rhythms in AVP release and other biological processes are driven by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the anterior hypothalamus. Loss of vasopressin signaling alters circadian behavior, but the basis of these effects remains unclear. Here we investigate the role of AVP signaling in circadian timekeeping by analyzing behavior and SCN function in a novel AVP-deficient mouse model. Consistent with previous work, loss of AVP signaling increases water consumption and accelerates recovery to simulated jetlag. We expand on these results to show that loss …

A wide spectrum of genetic and epigenetic variations together with environmental factors has made colorectal cancer (CRC), which involves the colon and rectum, a challenging and heterogeneous cancer. CRC cannot be effectively overcome by common conventional therapies including surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and hormone replacement which highlights the need for a rational design of novel anticancer therapy. Accumulating evidence indicates that RNA interference (RNAi) could be an important avenue to generate great therapeutic efficacy for CRC by targeting genes that are responsible for the viability, cell cycle, proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, metastasis, and invasion of CRC cells. Life-long learning is an ancient concept. The young are unaware of it. A beginning practitioner, often blinded by ego, ignores its value. The seasoned veteran, haunted by challenges, wonders how it passed him by. History can and does often teach us lessons. In 1787, Benjamin Franklin stood up to address the American Constitutional Convention and urged his fellow patriots to sign the document. At the age of 81, he was the oldest person in the group. He acknowledged having opened his mind to contrarian viewpoints from his younger colleagues. Franklin spoke these words: “If you are convinced that you know …

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

This review covers the development of bioresorbable polymeric composites for applications in tissue engineering. Various commercially available bioresorbable polymers are described, with emphasis on recent bioresorbable composites based on natural and synthetic polymers. Bioresorbable polymers contain hydrolyzable bonds, which are subjected to chemical degradation via either reactive hydrolysis or enzyme-catalyzed active hydrolysis. For synthetic polymers, chemical hydrolysis is the most important mode of degradation. The degradation rate can be controlled by varying the molecular weight and crystallinity. Examples of bioresorbable polymers are: polyurethane, poly(D,L)lactide, poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid, poly(α-hydroxy acids), cross-linked polyester hydrogels, poly(orthoesters), polyanhydrides and polyethylene glycol.

This is a comprehensive study reporting the fabrication of highly porous Gehlenite scaffold (Ca2Al2SiO7)—both with and without surface modification—for the first time. The sintering temperature of Gehlenite scaffolds was optimized. Next, the optimized Gehlenite scaffold was coated by polycaprolactone (PCL)-Forsterite (Mg2SiO4) nanocomposite to improve the scaffold’s brittleness and biological properties. 1375 °C was found to be the optimized sintering temperature by which the Gehlenite scaffold was consolidated. Different PCL and Forsterite concentrations were separately applied on the optimized scaffold to yield a complete nanocomposite coating without clogging the macroporous structure. …
