Hormones, as we understand them, are of many types and have many functions. To the average layman, the term hormone implies a relationship to reproduction and growth. To the chemist however, this expression immediately brings to mind the internal secretions of the ductless glands which are of the utmost importance to the animal body because of the action of hormones in controlling and integrating the manifold activities of the body. Traditionally, radiation of those wavelengths produced by a potential of from 2 to 25kv. has been classified as "Grenz" or "soft" x-rays. The peculiar property of this radiation is its low penetrating power. While being transparent to more energetic radiation, animal tissue and similar materials are sufficiently opaque to Grenz rays as to be studied in detail. Since the radiation is of the continuous type, it can be made soft enough to reveal any object, providing, of course, that the tube window and object medium be not opaque. Soft x-rays are produced in exactly the same manner as others, except …

The Lancefield Group A hemolytic streptococcus liberates, among other substances, a hemolyzing agent or streptolysin which is capable of activating the production of specific antibodies. Todd separated two distinct streptolysins. He found that streptolysin S was oxygen stable and serum soluble and that streptolysin 0 was oxygen-labile and much more antigenic than the former.

The purpose of this article is to outline briefly the present status in moral theology of the various procedures pertinent to sterility testing and artificial insemination. Both subjects are complicated. To simplify the matter as much as possible, I shall use the outline form and shall include the absolute minimum of discussion. Physicians interested in longer explanations will find these in the sources referred to at the end of the article.

1. The widely accepted theory that calcium participates in the coagulation mechanism in the form of Ca++ and acts as a catalyst is not in accord with several important experimental findings:
(a) The anticoagulant action of sodium oxalate is much slower than the precipitation of ionized calcium as the oxalate salt.
(b) Sodium citrate begins to depress prothrombin activity at a concentration at which ionized calcium is still present. The inability of tricalcium phosphate to adsorb prothrombin from citrated plasma indicates that citrate forms a complex with prothrombin and it is postulated that prothrombin is …
