The use of doubly labeled water (DLW) to measure energy expenditure is subject to error if the background abundance of the oxygen and hydrogen isotope tracers changes during the test period. This study evaluated the accuracy and precision of different methods by which such background isotope changes can be corrected, including a modified method that allows prediction of the baseline that would be achieved if subjects were to consume water from a given source indefinitely. Subjects in this study were eight women (4 test subjects and 4 control subjects) who consumed for 28 days water enriched to resemble drinking water …

Immune Responses To Final Exams In Healthy And Asthmatic Adolescents, Duck-Hee Kang, Christopher L. Coe, Donna O. Mccarthy, William B. Ershler

Immune responses to an academic stressor were examined in healthy and asthmatic adolescents with regard to their illness symptom reports. Eighty-seven high school students completed a health diary for 2 weeks and provided three blood samples during midsemester, final-exam, and postexam periods. During exam week, all students showed significant immunological alterations from baseline: Natural killer cell activity was significantly lower, whereas lymphocyte proliferation and neutrophil superoxide release were significantly higher. These immune changes tended to return toward baseline during the postexam period, but the enhanced neutrophil reactivity continued to rise. Overall, immunological responses were similar between asthmatic subjects and controls. …

A Comparison Of The Ovulation Method With The Cue Ovulation Predictor In Determining The Fertile Period, Richard J. Fehring

The purpose of this study was to compare the CUE Ovulation Predictor with the ovulation method in determining the fertile period. Eleven regularly ovulating women measured their salivary and vaginal electrical resistance (ER) with the CUE, observed their cervical-vaginal mucus, and measured their urine for a luteinizing hormone (LH) surge on a daily basis. Data from 21 menstrual cycles showed no statistical difference (T= 0.33, p= 0.63) between the CUE fertile period, which ranged from 5 to 10 days (mean = 6.7 days, SD = 1.6), and the fertile period of the ovulation method, which ranged from 4 to 9 …

Thrombin binds to fibrin at two classes of non-substrate sites, one of high affinity and the other of low affinity. We investigated the location of these thrombin binding sites by assessing the binding of thrombin to fibrin lacking or containing γ′ chains, which are fibrinogen γ chain variants that contain a highly anionic carboxyl-terminal sequence. We found the high affinity thrombin binding site to be located exclusively in D domains on γ′ chains (Ka, 4.9 × 106−1; n, 1.05 per γ′ chain), whereas the low affinity thrombin binding site was in the fibrin E …

Relationships Of Job And Family Involvement, Family Social Support, And Work–Family Conflict With Job And Life Satisfaction, Gary A. Adams, Lynda A. King, Daniel W. King

A model of the relationship between work and family that incorporates variables from both the work-family conflict and social support literatures was developed and empirically tested. This model related bidirectional work-family conflict, family instrumental and emotional social support, and job and family involvement to job and life satisfaction. Data came from 163 workers who were living with at least 1 family member. Results suggested that relationships between work and family can have an important effect on job and life satisfaction and that the level of involvement the worker assigns to work and family roles is associated with this relationship. The difference between peak 1 and peak 2 fibrinogen lies in their γ chains. Peak 1 molecules contain 2 γA chains; peak 2 molecules contain 1 γA and 1 γ‘ chain, the latter of which contains a 20 amino acid extension (γ‘ 408−427) replacing the carboxyl-terminal 4 amino acids of the γA chain (γA 408−411). While the existence of γ‘ chains in plasma fibrinogen molecules has been known for many years, their function remains unknown. When fibrinogen is purified from plasma, the factor XIII zymogen (A2B2) copurifies with it and is found only in the peak …

The purpose of this investigation was to render a more complete understanding of subjective perceptions of pressure ulcers from the perspective of family dyads, and to study the effect of these subjective experiences on preventive behaviors and pressure ulcer outcomes. A naturalistic inquiry, combined with objective measures, was used. Twenty-one dyads participated in four in-depth interviews to explore how they mentally represented and responded to the risk of pressure ulcers. Through the process of concept development, a lay representation of pressure ulcers was developed. This process produced a new concept, identified as “shared care,” that explained how the dyads interaction …

The purpose of this study was to determine the transformation temperatures for the austenitic, martensitic, and rhombohedral (R) structure phases in representative as-received commercial nitinol (NiTi) orthodontic wire alloys, to reconcile discrepancies among recent publications. Specimens were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) over a temperature range from approximately −170° C to 100° C, with a scanning rate of 10° C per minute. Two different pathways, with the intermediate R structure either absent or present, were observed for the transformation from martensitic to austenitic NiTi, whereas the reverse transformation from austenitic to martensitic NiTi always included the R structure. Cross-linking of fibrinogen at its COOH-terminal gamma chain cross-linking site occurs in the presence of factor XIIIa due to self-association at a constitutive D domain site ("gammaXL"). We investigated the contribution of COOH-terminal regions of fibrinogen Aalpha chains to the gammaXL site by comparing the gamma chain cross-linking rate of intact fibrinogen (fraction I-2) with that of plasma fraction I-9, plasmic fraction I-9D, and plasmic fragment D1, which lack COOH-terminal Aalpha chain regions comprising approximately 100, approximately 390, and 413 residues, respectively. Pediatric nurses struggle to find the right level of involvement with children and families. The purpose of this study was to illuminate nurses' struggles and insights as they learned to find the interpersonal boundaries of their own practice. The phenomenological method of Heideggerian hermeneutics was used to analyze data from audiotaped and transcribed single interviews of five pediatric nurses. The analysis of the transcriptions involved multiple stages of interpretation using a research team. Evidence For Intramolecular Cross-Linked Aα·Γ Chain Heterodimers In Plasma Fibrinogen, Kevin R. Siebenlist, Michael W. Mosesson

A peptide band of ∼105 kDa migrating near the γ dimer position of disulfide bond reduced human plasma fibrinogen prepared from fresh single donor or outdated plasma was identified by SDS−PAGE. The band, amounting to ∼2% of the total Aα/γ chain population, was thrombin and plasmin sensitive and reacted with antibodies to Aα or γ chains but not with antibodies to Bβ chains, plasminogen, or factor XIII. Amino acid sequencing revealed a double sequence corresponding to that of Aα and γ chains, indicating that the band consists of covalently cross-linked Aα·γ chain heterodimers. Perinatal health professionals are in key positions to either promote or dissuade the use of Natural Family Planning (NFP). The purpose of this article is to describe a survey conducted with perinatal physicians and nurses on their knowledge and professional use of NFP. Four hundred and fifty physicians and nurses (150 MDs and 300 RNs) were sent a questionnaire on the use of and knowledge of NFP. One hundred sixty-six (or 37%) returned the completed questionnaires. Fifty-two percent of the nurses who returned the questionnaires and 48% of the physicians indicated they were taught about NFP in basic (generic) medical …
