Background

The recent global pandemic posed extraordinary challenges for healthcare systems. Frontline healthcare workers required focused, immediate, practical, evidence-based instruction on optimal patient care modalities as knowledge evolved around disease management.

Objective

This course was designed to provide knowledge to protect healthcare workers; combat disease spread; and improve patient outcomes.

A team of global healthcare workers responded by rapidly creating a competency-based online course. Background: Patient advocacy is a duty for professional nurses; however, not all nurses are empowered to advocate for meeting patients’ needs. Participation in labor unions may serve as a venue for nurses with limited institutional decision-making authority to advocate for patient needs; however, unionization can be a time-intensive and fraught process.

To assess how patient and caregiver factors influence caregiver readiness for hospital discharge in palliative care patients.

Study Setting and Design

This transitional care study uses cross-sectional data from a randomized controlled trial conducted from 2018 to 2023 testing an intervention for caregivers of hospitalized adult patients with a serious or life-limiting illness who received a palliative care consult prior to transitioning out of the hospital.

Though overrepresented in sex work communities, transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals are underrepresented in sex work literature. Parents of preterm infants experience stress related to uncertainty which impacts parent health outcomes. Less is known about the experience of parents whose infants are admitted for reasons other than prematurity. Critical care advanced practice providers (APPs) are frontline providers in many pediatric intensive care units (PICUs). From 2020 to 2022, there was a significant downward shift in nursing experience level in the PICU at the authors’ institution. APPs may help provide additional in situ education.

Methods

Data were collected using role-specific needs assessment of PICU nursing staff and providers, assessing concept related to knowledge and job stress.

In this study, a new hybrid nanoparticle composed of magnesium hydroxide and copper oxide (Mg(OH)2/CuO) with an optimized ratio of magnesium (Mg) to copper (Cu) was designed and incorporated into a 3D-printed scaffold made of polycaprolactone (PCL) and gelatin. These hybrid nanostructures (MCNs) were prepared using a green, solvent-free method. This lesson engages upper-level biomedical science students in analyzing the complex interplay between vaccination rates, herd immunity and vaccine exemption policies through examination of the 2019 New York measles outbreak that threatened the United States’ measles elimination status. Bifid mandibular canals are common anatomical findings with variations based on direction and location of branching, which carry significant clinical implications for endodontic and surgical dental procedures. This case report describes a previously unreported ectopic dental canal that branches off the superior border of the mandibular canal, enters the apex of a mandibular second molar, traverses through the root, anastomoses with the root canal system, and subsequently exits through the lingual aspect of the root. Background

As health care continues to evolve, the electronic medical record (EHR) has emerged as an important decision-making tool. To ensure that nursing students work toward competency with the EHR, this study sought to gather information regarding how students use the EHR.

Method

Students in a direct-entry, prelicensure program were observed using the EHR during a simulation-based experience (SBE). Focus groups gathered qualitative student perceptions of EHR use.

Results

Minimal use of the EHR during SBE was identified. Students reported using the EHR for information gathering, validating findings, and nursing tasks.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) complicate about 10% of pregnancies and lead to postpartum hospital readmissions and cardiovascular complications. Following HDP, vascular dysfunction could persist and accelerate the trajectory of cardiovascular disease risk. The benefits of intensive blood pressure (BP) control following HDP have not been adequately investigated. Therefore, no standard guidelines exist to guide the management of mild-to-moderate hypertension in the postpartum period, leading to a wide variation in clinical practice. This study investigated joint-specific muscular effort during a sit-to-stand by calculating relative-muscular-effort and investigating differences between healthy older and young adults.

We contrast lesion prevalence and patterning among cercopithecoid primates and map variation onto socioecological variables. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common and potentially serious sleep disorder characterized by repetitive episodes of complete or partial upper airway obstruction during sleep. These obstructions result in a reduction or cessation of airflow, leading to oxygen desaturation, and disruptions in sleep patterns.1,2 Common symptoms of OSA include loud snoring, gasping or choking during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, and irritability. Obstructive sleep apnea is often associated with other medical conditions, such as obesity, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Diagnosis typically involves polysomnography to assess the frequency and severity of apneic episodes.

Objective: The aims of this study were to assess the accuracy of Cameriere’s and Demirjian’s methods in Finnish children, and compare the findings with those of the Turkish children according to dental age.

Material and methods: Dental panoramic tomography (DPT) of children (482 Finnish, 423 Turkish) aged between 5 and 15 years were evaluated. Comparison of mean difference between estimated and chronological age was evaluated. The difference between two means was analysed using paired t-test at 95% confidence interval (CI). Pearson correlation coefficients were used to estimate the correlation between chronological and estimated ages.
