Project Wolbachia is a vector control method that releases male Wolbachia-infected Aedes mosquitoes to curb dengue transmission in Singapore. While research has primarily focused on its efficacy, few studies have examined public opinion. This study draws upon the cognitive miser model and scientific literacy model to examine the factors shaping public support for Project Wolbachia. A nationally representative door-to-door survey was conducted in Singapore (N = 1,000) using multi-stage stratified random sampling. Our findings revealed that while knowledge about Project Wolbachia explains public support, laypeople may often rely on cognitive shortcuts, such as value predispositions, media attention, and pre-existing perceptions, …

Surgical complications remain a major source of preventable morbidity, mortality, and health care expenditure, but existing frameworks such as the Clavien-Dindo classification and Comprehensive Complication Index are clinician-centred and intervention-focused and fail to capture cumulative patient-centred outcomes. This protocol outlines the Complications After Major and Minor Urological Surgery (CAMUS) initiative, a global, multiphase effort to redefine complication reporting, risk stratification, and outcome measurement in urological surgery. CAMUS aims to address these limitations via an integrated, seven-arm programme combining retrospective and prospective data analysis, consensus development, and digital infrastructure design. Arm 1 has assembled a retrospective data set of 130 034 …

Introduction: Though often necessary for adequate analgesia after spine surgery, continued opioid use can lead to chronic dependency. The Michigan Spine Surgery Improvement Collaborative (MSSIC) has demonstrated in prior work the promise of utilizing a multi-institutional morphine milliequivalent (MME) cutoff for elective anterior cervical surgery in the opioid naıve population. However, the effect of this cutoff in patients who were already on opioids pre-operatively have not previously been studied. The goal of this study was to evaluate whether changes in prescribing patterns in the opioid naıve population would also translate to the non-naıve populations, and whether the non-naıve population would …

Introduction: Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols have been introduced to several surgical specialties with the intention to reduce peri-operative adverse events and improve various health-system quality metrics including length of stay and patient satisfaction. Though this has been studied in the setting of spine surgery, the vast majority are single institution protocols biased toward academic teaching hospitals. There is a paucity of literature studying the utilization of a multi-institutional ERAS protocols that is applicable to community hospitals without associated training programs. We present the Michigan Spine Surgery Improvement Collaborative (MSSIC) two-year experience implementing a multi-institutional ERAS protocol for elective …

Introduction: Chronic opioid dependency in spine surgery is an ongoing concern given the ongoing opioid epidemic. We have previously reported on our cohort of opioid-naıve patients, however the literature has shown that patients with opioid use at baseline are at higher risk of less favorable outcomes. Starting in 2022, MSSIC instituted state-wide prescribing guidelines for opioid naıve patients undergoing one- or two-level lumbar decompression surgery (laminectomy, laminotomy, foraminotomy, microdiscectomy) with performance goals of 80% compliance. The goal of this study was to evaluate whether there would be a form of a “halo” effect on prescribing patterns for patients with baseline …

Significantly Elevated Procalcitonin In Aki Reliable Or Not Reliable?, Sally Othman, Sujata Kambhatla, Chadi Saad
Conference Presentation Abstracts
Introduction Procalcitonin (PCT) is a biomarker that helps distinguish bacterial infections from other causes of infection or inflammation and can be used as a helpful adjunct to clinical judgment to resolve diagnostic uncertainty. However, the reliability of procalcitonin goes down when a patient has Acute kidney injury (AKI). Yet is there any significance for procalcitonin if it is extremely high, in hundreds, same in our patient, despite the patient in AKI and can PCT still be used to help determine mortality along with all other markers, or independent from other markers. Case report 36 years old male with PMH of …

Patterns Of Acquisition For /ɹ/ Across Phonetic Contexts, Hailey Nielson
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
Purpose:
This study examined longitudinal changes in /ɹ/ production (i.e., the “r” sound) among 14 children aged five to seven at risk for persistent speech sound disorders (SSDs). Children at risk for SSDs show slower or atypical development of /ɹ/, yet little is known about which early patterns predict persistent difficulty, making it difficult for clinicians to prioritize caseloads and provide timely intervention. Using perceptual accuracy ratings across varied /ɹ/ contexts, we modeled growth in /ɹ/ accuracy across different word contexts and evaluated the extent to which early accuracy and changes in /ɹ/production predicted mastery at age seven.
Methods:
Longitudinal …

Challenging Myths In Speech-Language Pathology: A Scientific Review Of Augmentative And Alternative Communication (Aac) Use, Bilingualism, And Late Talking, Mariah Morris
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Persistent myths within the field of speech-language pathology continue to influence clinical decision-making and contribute to biases experienced by both providers and clients. This scientific review examines common misconceptions surrounding late talking, bilingualism, and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) by evaluating current evidence-based research. Specifically, this review addresses three central questions: Do children outgrow late talking? Does bilingualism cause language delay in children? Does AAC hinder speech development?
An analysis of multiple peer-reviewed studies revealed little statistical support for the belief that bilingualism or AAC use causes language delays. Instead, research indicates that factors such as limited access to language-rich …

Prediabetes Prediction Before Disease Onset Using Multimodal Health Data: A Machine Learning Approach, Luisa Veronica Gracia Mazuca
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Prediabetes is a critical health condition that increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test diagnoses patients with prediabetes, but the disease has already caused metabolic alterations. Early detection is essential for timely interventions, and machine learning models offer a promising approach to identify prediabetic individuals through the analysis of biomarkers such as cytokines. We compared four classifiers-logistic regression, decision tree, random forest, and k-nearest neighbors - using cytokines (TNF-α, MCP-1, IL-1β, IL-6, IFN-γ), age, BMI, and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). Models were evaluated using stratified 5-fold cross-validation and ROC-AUC. K-Nearest Neighbors (k-NN) achieved the highest …

Determining Zap-70 Signaling Pathways Mediated By Ccr7 In Tcr T Cell Activation, Vivian Torres
Determining Zap-70 Signaling Pathways Mediated By Ccr7 In Tcr T Cell Activation, Vivian Torres
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Activation of T lymphocytes is the main event that occurs in the adaptive immune response after engagement of the T cell receptor (TCR) with the peptide of the major histocompatibility complex (pMHC) molecules that are demonstrated by antigen presenting cells [1]. A key step in this process is the recruitment and activation of the zeta chain associated protein of 70 kDa (ZAP-70). ZAP-70 couples TCR engagement to downstream intracellular signaling pathways through phosphorylation of tyrosine residues within intracellular tyrosine activation motifs (ITAMs) [2]. Although there have been extensive studies on the signaling response through TCR activation, the regulatory influence of …
Molecular Mechanisms Of Pfas Induced Protein Dysfunction: Implications For Neurodegenerative Risk, Daisy Lee Wilson
Molecular Mechanisms Of Pfas Induced Protein Dysfunction: Implications For Neurodegenerative Risk, Daisy Lee Wilson
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental contaminants with widespread human exposure and well-established links to adverse health outcomes. However, despite increasing epidemiological and experimental evidence, the molecular mechanisms underlying PFAS-induced neurotoxicity remain incompletely defined. This dissertation investigates PFAS toxicity across biological scales, integrating protein biophysics with neuronal cell models to elucidate pathways relevant to neurodegeneration. At the molecular level, we demonstrate that PFAS disrupts the structure and function of globular proteins, including the impairment of α-lactalbumin's calcium-binding capacity and of β-lactoglobulin's retinol binding, through concentration-dependent conformational destabilization. By applying these findings to a neuronal model, we show that …

Paucilactobacillus Wasatchensis Gas Production In Cheddar Cheese Through Symbiotic Amino Acid Metabolism With Lactococcus Lactis Starter Cultures, Niharika Mishra
Paucilactobacillus Wasatchensis Gas Production In Cheddar Cheese Through Symbiotic Amino Acid Metabolism With Lactococcus Lactis Starter Cultures, Niharika Mishra
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Cheese is popular for its rich sensory notes and desirable physical attributes; however, the late blowing gas defect in cheddar cheese disrupts its appearance and can undermine its commercial value, for example if the late gas defect is severe, the block can crumble upon cutting, increasing cutting losses from 10% (non-defective) up to 50% (Donnely et al., 2014).
Paucilactobacillus wasatchensis cannot survive pasteurization (McMahon, D. J., et al., 2020); therefore, it enters the cheese as a contaminant during the cheesemaking process. Cheesemaking occurs in three stages: (1) curdling of milk by acidification through starter cultures, (2) separation of curd from …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Chronic primary pain refers to physical pain that has no apparent organic cause, cannot be explained by another condition, and has associated psychological distress or functional impairment. Chronic primary pain is common and can significantly interfere with functioning, including occupational or social functioning. Research has shown that physicians struggle to treat this population, with many physicians reporting feeling unequipped and many patients feeling that their physicians are unhelpful and dismissive. Compassion may play a key role in improving these difficult interactions. The present study analyzed a sample of 99 participants with chronic pain and 100 healthy controls to learn more …
Cultural Adaptation Of A Single Session Acceptance And Commitment Therapy Guide For College Students In Uganda, Miriam Mukasa Kasozi
Cultural Adaptation Of A Single Session Acceptance And Commitment Therapy Guide For College Students In Uganda, Miriam Mukasa Kasozi
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and stress are common among Ugandan university students and can make it difficult for them to succeed in school or maintain well-being. However, many students do not have access to professional mental health care. Digital self-help programs can make support more available, especially when they are designed to fit the local culture and context. This project examined how an online program called ACT Guide Lite, which teaches skills from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), could be adapted for use with Ugandan college students. Students and other university community members first completed the program …
Characterizing Metabolic Flux Of Plant Secondary Metabolites From Diverse Animal-Source Foods To Humans, Muhammad Ahsin

There is a popular saying: “You are what you eat.” But does this also mean, “You are what your food eats”? This dissertation explores that question by examining how farming practices shape the nutritional quality of meat—and what, if anything, those differences mean for the people who consume it. While modern livestock production and nutrition research often emphasize protein and fat, this work tests the idea that animals function as biological mediators, linking soil and plant conditions to human diets through the chemical composition of meat and milk. To evaluate this hypothesis, we tracked health-relevant plant compounds— phytonutrients—across the soil–plant–animal–human …
Impact Of Inhibiting Mitochondrial Calcium Uptake On Calcium Homeostasis And Postmortem Metabolism In Porcine Muscle, Fatema Rahaman Mishu
Impact Of Inhibiting Mitochondrial Calcium Uptake On Calcium Homeostasis And Postmortem Metabolism In Porcine Muscle, Fatema Rahaman Mishu

After harvesting the animal, pork muscle continues to undergo changes as it turns from muscle into meat. During this early period, the muscle uses up energy and produces acid, which lowers pH and can affect important quality traits such as color and how well the meat holds water. A key driver of these early changes is calcium, a natural mineral inside muscle cells that helps control contraction and energy use. In this study, we tested whether mitochondria (the cell’s “powerhouse”) help control calcium after harvest and, in turn, influence early postmortem changes in pork. We used a research compound (DS16570511) …
Probing The Roles Of Connexin 43 Hemichannels In A Mouse Model Of Alzheimer's Disease, Madison Treasure-Areno
Probing The Roles Of Connexin 43 Hemichannels In A Mouse Model Of Alzheimer's Disease, Madison Treasure-Areno
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disorder involving neuronal death and cognitive decline, such as memory loss and changes in personality. One feature of the disease is buildup of abnormal protein called amyloid-beta in the brain. Amyloid-beta may activate support cells called astrocytes, triggering them to release large amounts of chemicals, possibly harming nearby cells. This study set out to examine the roles of the channels on astrocytes involved in releasing these chemicals, called connexin 43 hemichannels. Using a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease, this study blocked the hemichannels using the drug Tonabersat, and measured spatial learning and memory in a …
