Aviation Accident Investigation Analysis Methodologies Used By 12 Government Safety Investigation Authorities, Kym Bills, Leesa Costello, Marcus Cattani
Aviation Accident Investigation Analysis Methodologies Used By 12 Government Safety Investigation Authorities, Kym Bills, Leesa Costello, Marcus Cattani
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Introduction: Leading government Safety Investigation Authorities (SIAs) that investigate major aviation accidents are members of the International Transportation Safety Association (ITSA). Investigation analysis methodology details are rarely included on SIA websites, in final accident reports, shared with peers, or specified by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Some ‘New View’ safety researchers assume SIAs don't use systemic methodologies and that accident investigation has little value. Because of the sensitivity of SIA work and need to prioritize safety value from available investigation funding, there has been little academic research on choice and use of investigation analysis methodologies to address these issues …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background A sensitive, well-functioning maternal interaction is vital for healthy infant development. For moderate to late preterm infants, this is even more important as this group of infants are at increased risk of facing neurodevelopmental disorders. The Early Collaborative Intervention supports parent-preterm infant interaction and includes three sessions, two in the hospital and one after discharge. Objective To investigate the impact of the Early Collaborative Intervention, compared with standard care, on mother-preterm infant interaction at one month corrected age. Design A longitudinal randomized controlled trial, reporting secondary outcomes from the first follow-up. Setting The intervention was conducted at a pediatric …

Exploring The Fidelity Of Resistance Training Interventions In Regional, Rural, And Remote Cancer Care: A Systematic Scoping Review, Christopher W. Rowe, Nicolas H. Hart, Julia Carlino, James Murray
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Resistance-based exercise interventions are an integral part of supportive cancer care, though their high quality and high-fidelity implementation with people with cancer living in non-metropolitan locations is challenging. This systematic scoping review aimed to identify how exercise prescription principles and measures of fidelity are reported in resistance-based exercise interventions delivered to people with cancer living in regional, rural and remote areas. A systematic scoping review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Five electronic databases were searched (MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, SCOPUS and SportDiscus) for peer-reviewed studies published in English, that delivered a resistance-based exercise intervention to adult cancer survivors …

Blazevich, Christos Kokkotis, Spyridon Plakias, Brett Anthony Baxter, Alex J. Van Enis, Giannis Giakas, Minas A. Mina
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: The back squat is a key strength and conditioning exercise used to develop lower-limb strength and power, yet little is known about how movement velocity influences its acute performance-enhancing effects, such as improvements in countermovement jump height and power. The present study examined the acute effects of slow (vslow) versus fast (vfast) eccentric-phase velocity during back squats performed withmaximal concentric velocity on subsequent countermovement jump (CMJ) performance, using a randomized, crossover design. Methods: Fourteen male subjects (age = 22.9 ± 1.9 years; height = 1.8 ± 0.1 m; mass = 76.4 ± 8.3 kg) visited the laboratory on two …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: We conducted cumulative meta-analyses to quantify the degree to which maternal prenatal anxiety impacts preterm birth (PTB) and low birthweight (LBW), and to identify when findings reached stability, enabling confident recommendations for early interventions. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, we systematically searched PubMed/MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Scopus, EMBASE, CINAHL (EBSCO), ProQuest, and the Cochrane Library from database inception to May 7, 2025. The methodological quality of included studies was assessed using the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale. Inverse variance weighted random-effects cumulative meta-analysis was performed to pool adjusted odds ratios (AORs) with sequential inclusion of newly published studies. Stability thresholds were computed to assess sufficiency …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Understanding how bones adapt during growth is essential for promoting lifelong skeletal health. Peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) is a widely used imaging technique for assessing volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) in pediatric populations; however, conventional methods may obscure subtle cortical adaptations. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of shape-based cortical vBMD profiling, with an exploratory objective of assessing its sensitivity to inter-individual variation in lean mass index (LMI). Methods: Eighteen children (6–12 years) underwent pQCT scanning at the 38% and 66% tibial sites (distal and proximal diaphysis). Cortical vBMD was quantified across three …

Ig–Microbiota Binding Patterns In Mothers And Infants: A Scoping Review, Alicia Tan Yi Jia, Christopher S. Peacock, Danielle E. Dye, Claus T. Christophersen
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Studies characterising the immunoglobulin (Ig)-bound microbiota apply varying methodologies, making comparisons difficult. This scoping review synthesised evidence on Ig–microbiota binding patterns in maternal and infant contexts, identified recurrent Ig-bound and -unbound bacteria across studies, and highlighted knowledge gaps for further study. Nine articles investigating Ig–microbiota binding patterns in stool or breastmilk samples in mothers or infants were included. Ig–microbiota associations were influenced by sample type, Ig-subclass, genetics, and diet. The most important antibody was IgA, with partial functional redundancy with IgM, while IgG appeared more selective for pathobionts. Ig-bound taxa in early life included important commensals and pathobionts, with high …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Immersive technologies such as 360-degree video virtual reality (360VR) provide unique opportunities to simulate representative environments to investigate decision-making in a safe and cost-effective manner. Inclusion of multi-sensory visual, contextual, and auditory information is important to enhance simulator psychological fidelity. Yet, the influence of increased sensory information on decision-making, presence, and cognitive load in 360VR compared to less immersive two-dimensional video simulators is unknown. This study investigated multi-sensory information, presence, and cognitive load across immersion conditions (360VR and two-dimensional video) in an exemplar sport-specific decision-making task. Fifteen higher-skilled and 15 lesser-skilled Australian Rules Football players completed a decision-making task which …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Introduction: Developmental coordination disorder (DCD), a common neurodevelopmental condition, is associated with persistent motor and psychosocial difficulties impacting participation and quality of life. International guidelines recommend activity-/participation-focused, task-specific interventions; however, little is known about how Australian occupational therapists translate these recommendations into clinical practice. This study aimed to describe current Australian occupational therapy intervention for children with (or suspected to have) DCD and identify factors that shape occupational therapists' intervention choices. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was distributed to Australian occupational therapists via professional organisations/social media September–October 2020. Eligible participants were registered occupational therapists with ≥15% children in their caseload. …

Background: Osteosarcopenia—the coexistence of osteopenia/osteoporosis and sarcopenia—is associated with numerous adverse health outcomes, but its association with intrinsic capacity (IC) remains unknown. We aimed to explore the associations of osteosarcopenia with IC and all-cause mortality in older adults. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of IC and a prospective analysis of all-cause mortality in 1142 participants from the Toledo Study for Healthy Aging (75.1 ± 6.0 years, 53.1% women). Participants were classified as having no musculoskeletal disorders, osteopenia/osteoporosis, sarcopenia, or osteosarcopenia (DXA- and EWGSOP2-based criteria). IC was operationalized as a composite score integrating locomotion, cognition, psychological, vitality, and sensory domains. …

Background. Safety supports psychological wellbeing and potentially shapes brain aging yet existing scales overlook cumulative lifespan safety experiences.
Methods. To address this gap, we developed and validated the Lifetime Sense of Safety (LSS) scale in Kenyan adults. The LSS uses visual analog scaling with a red-to-green color gradient to retrospectively rate felt safety across life stages and settings. We evaluated scale psychometrics and associations with social determinants of health and indicators of brain health.
Results. The LSS shows adequate internal consistency and test-retest reliability, with two distinct but correlated factors representing childhood and adulthood safety. Women and …

Underdiagnosis of cardiometabolic risk factors (CMRFs) may represent an unrecognised biological pathway contributing to dementia risk; yet remains poorly characterised in African and African diaspora populations. We quantified the prevalence and determinants of underdiagnosed hypertension and abnormal glycaemia across four cohorts comprising up to 7000 adults aged ≥40 years from Nigeria, Kenya, and The United States: Indianapolis, and North Texas. Underdiagnosis was defined as absence of self-reported diagnosis despite elevated systolic blood pressure ( ≥130 mmHg) or fasting blood glucose ( ≥100 mg/dL). Cohort-stratified analyses examined demographic, socioeconomic, cognitive, Alzheimer’s genetic, and blood-based biomarker correlates. Underdiagnosis was pervasive in African …

An Obligatory Role For Agrp Neurons In Maintaining Body Temperature During Time-Restricted Feeding, Cunjin Su, Jing Cai, Yuanzhong Xu, Benjamin R Arenkiel, Qingchun Tong
The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine
Homeotherms maintain a steady body temperature through thermoregulation, a process critical for survival during fasting, in which the brain has to defend energy-costly body temperature while reducing energy expenditure to conserve energy reserve; however, the neural basis for defending body temperature remains unclear. Here, we demonstrated that AgRP neuron lesion led to lethality during time-restricted feeding on chow but not on HFD, and caused no obvious impact on HFD-induced obesity or obesity-reducing responses to glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonism. The lesion disrupted adaptive feeding behaviors during time-restricted feeding and reduced motivational feeding on chow. Notably, the lethality was caused by hypothermia …
Understanding And Enhancing Suicide Prevention Strategies In The Military: The Roles Of Culture, Leadership, And Command Climate, Kelly Johanna Pires
Understanding And Enhancing Suicide Prevention Strategies In The Military: The Roles Of Culture, Leadership, And Command Climate, Kelly Johanna Pires
Dissertations
Military service members are shaped and molded to fit a military culture that emphasizes mission readiness and continuous preparedness. Countless hours are spent training for various situations that can arise. Many trainings are geared toward worst-case scenarios that can cause an increase in stressors and traumatic events. They are expected to demonstrate resilience and overcome adversity to remain mission-ready. This expectation to be mission-ready creates the space for mental health difficulties as well as stigma and avoidance of help-seeking behaviors. In many cases, the desire to stay mission-ready creates a barrier for conversations around mental health. The military emphasizes qualities …
