A great deal of work has been expended on the study of the functions of the spleen, and the results obtained have, for the most part, been disappointing. Unlike most other organs of the body, the spleen is not easily accessible to study either by means of its physiological effects or by chemical tests to determine its functional activity, and this is especially true in regard to any secretions it may pour out. Its widespread use as a remedy in conditions of failing heart, and its effectiveness as a diuretic in certain dropsical conditions have gained for it a reputation which is equaled by few other drugs. The Spleen Considered With Special Reference To Its Functions, Louis J. Schmidt

Bachelors’ Theses

In arranging this thesis an attempt has been made to show that by virtue of its embryology, anatomy and histology, the spleen is the better enabled to carry out its alleged functions. The discussion here presented is confined to a story of the functions of the mammalian spleen alone. The similarities in the reactions of the spleen in the various mammalia is quite evident. Experimentation and observations were carried out on the lower mammalia while only the reactions of the splenectomized humans could be observed.

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

The object of these experiments was to determine the length of time during which B. tuberculosis in cow's faeces remain alive and virulent on pasture land in the south of England. The method of testing for living B. tuberculosis is given in Appendix II.
