The Ultrastructure Of The Choroid Plexus In Vitamin A Deficient Rabbits, Everet W. Witzel Jun 1960

The Ultrastructure Of The Choroid Plexus In Vitamin A Deficient Rabbits, Everet W. Witzel

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The fire structure of the lateral choroid plexus in vitamin A deficient hydrocephalic New Zealand white rabbits has been studied with the aid of both light and electron microscopy.

A special Vitamin A deficient diet was fed to all rabbits and control rabbits in addition received orally 12,500 I. U. of vitamin A powder per week. The offspring of does thus maintained for several months were studied.

All rabbits were decapitated; the left lateral choroid plexus was quickly exposed, and subjected to the fixative within 90 seconds following the death of the animal. Conventional techniques of fixation, embedding, and sectioning …

The Post-Basic Preparation Received By Administrative, Supervisory And Head Nurses In Six Hospitals, Margaret Josephine Patry Jun 1960

The Post-Basic Preparation Received By Administrative, Supervisory And Head Nurses In Six Hospitals, Margaret Josephine Patry

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

It was the purpose of this survey to find out what post-basic preparation the administrative, supervisory and head nurses had received for their positions in six Seventh-day Adventist hospitals. The descriptive survey was chosen as the method of approach in the study. An information card was devised to gather the data. A total of 190 or 81 percent of the 235 anticipated responses were returned. The recommended preparation for nurses in nursing service positions, as set forth by the American Nurses' Association in the Functions, Standards and Qualifications for Practice, was selected as the criteria by which this preparation was …

Management Of Chronic Otitis Media, Bruce A. Sanderson Jun 1960

Management Of Chronic Otitis Media, Bruce A. Sanderson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The author presents a detailed review of the methods used in the management of chronic otitis media. The advances made in the diagnosis and treatment of this condition during the past twenty-five centuries are listed. Medical and surgical procedures to eliminate chronic otitis media are reviewed.

The author presents the results of his research studies which have helped to demonstrate a more effective way of preventing recurrent infections of the respiratory system and the ears.

A research project using rabbits has shown that bioflavonoids, Heparin, and rage prevent the inflammatory reaction incidental to the Schwartzman's phenomenon, whereas chilling the rabbit …

An Evaluation Of Two Preoperative Skin Preparation Procedures Used In The Operating Room Of A Selected Hospital, Maxine Darling Jun 1960

An Evaluation Of Two Preoperative Skin Preparation Procedures Used In The Operating Room Of A Selected Hospital, Maxine Darling

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to find out the immediate and residual antibacterial effects of the two preoperative skin preparation procedures most commonly used in the operating room of this selected hospital.

This study was conducted on one hundred selected surgical patients from the general medical and surgical units of this hospital. The preoperative skin preparation Procedure A (ether-alcohol-tincture of zephiran) was compared with the preoperative skin preparation Procedure B (3 per cent hexachlorophene solution). Data for the comparison were gathered by taking four cultures at specified times. The cultures were taken from the operative sites on the surgical …

The Effects Of X-Rays And Beta Rays (Tritium) On The Growth Of Rickettsia Mooseri And Rickettsia Akari In Embryonate Eggs, Donald Greiff, E. L. Powers, Walter E. Kisieleski, Henry Pinkerton Jun 1960

The Effects Of X-Rays And Beta Rays (Tritium) On The Growth Of Rickettsia Mooseri And Rickettsia Akari In Embryonate Eggs, Donald Greiff, E. L. Powers, Walter E. Kisieleski, Henry Pinkerton

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The growth of Rickettsia mooseri was accelerated and quantitatively increased in embryonate eggs containing tritium oxide at levels of 180, 90, and 45 mc./egg during the growth period. The eggs of a group containing 22.5 mc./egg showed only a slight increase in the rate of growth of organisms; the infections in the eggs of a group given 11.2 mc./egg did not differ significantly from those of the control group. On the other hand, growth of R. akari was inhibited in embryonate eggs containing tritium oxide at levels of 180, 90, and 45 mc./egg, and partially inhibited in groups containing 22.5 …

The Presence Of Staphylococcus Aureus On Mothers Admitted To Selected Maternity Unit, Catherine Love Glatho Jun 1960

The Presence Of Staphylococcus Aureus On Mothers Admitted To Selected Maternity Unit, Catherine Love Glatho

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine if Staphylococcus aureus present in mothers when admitted to the maternity unit of the Loma Linda Sanitarium and Hospital could be a factor in the development of staphylococcal infection in infants. Biological specimens were collected from one hundred and forty mothers and their infants from September 1, 1959, to January 31, 1960. The specimens were obtained from the nares and external vulva of all mothers upon admission to the maternity unit, and from the nares and head of their infants after delivery. Of the one hundred and forty mothers participating, specimens were …

A Study Of Team Leader Activity On A Selected Medical Unit In A General Hospital, Margaret Elaine Schulhof Jun 1960

A Study Of Team Leader Activity On A Selected Medical Unit In A General Hospital, Margaret Elaine Schulhof

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to observe and analyze the activities of the nursing team leader on a selected medical unit of the Loma Linda Sanitarium and Hospital and to measure the percentage of time spent in each recognized function.

To accomplish this, the descriptive survey method was used. Six team leaders were "shadowed" by an. observer for a total of ten days. Record of all team leader activity was made on a specially prepared form which provided for classification of activity under Leino's six functions for the team leader. These are:

  1. To Identify the Patient's Nursing problems
  2. To …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Statement of the Problem:

The problem in this study was to determine if a relationship exists between high urea nitrogen retention and a high arterial diastolic blood pressure or diseases that are usually associated with a high arterial diastolic blood pressure.

Method of Study:

The descriptive survey method was used. Data for this study were obtained by reviewing charts of all patients whose NPN was 150 mg. percent or over or whose BUN was 100 mg. percent or over. During the specified two year period the White Memorial Clinical Laboratory records revealed thirty-five patients as falling into this category.

Platelet Immunology In Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura : A Review And Experimental Study, Albert Ross May 1960

Platelet Immunology In Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura : A Review And Experimental Study, Albert Ross

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

[From the Introduction] Within the past decade, progress in immuno-hematology has extended beyond the study of the erythrocyte. The demonstration of antibodies to red cells in some cases of acquired hemolytic anemia and in erythroblastosis fetalis defined the hypothetical existence of analogous phenomena for leucocytes and platelets. Advancements in immunologic technique have elevated the importance of immune bodies in the etiology of several cytopenic blood disorders. Extensive research has been done to elucidate the presence and nature of an anti-platelet factor int he serum of patients with thrombocytopenic purpura. Evidence of such a serum factor has been found in three …
