Spontaneous Rupture Of The Esophagus: Report Of A Successfully Managed Case, Eduardo Arciniegas Sep 1967

Spontaneous Rupture Of The Esophagus: Report Of A Successfully Managed Case, Eduardo Arciniegas

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Spontaneous rupture of the esophagus should be suspected in any patient developing severe chest pain after vomiting. The diagnosis is substantiated by the presence of subcutaneous emphysema in the suprasternal region on physical examination and of mediastinal air on the plain chest roentgenogram. Further radiological confirmation may be obtained by oral administration of a watersoluble radio-opaque material. Immediate surgical repair of the esophageal tear is mandatory.

Art In Psychotherapy, Robert R. Schopbach Sep 1967

Art In Psychotherapy, Robert R. Schopbach

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Art is a tool too often neglected in psychotherapy. A careful study of a patient's drawings will provide information concerning diagnosis, dynamics, and progress. If, in addition, the patient explains and elaborates upon the content and symbolism, the drawings become excellent psychotherapeutic devices providing an entry into the patient's unconscious.

The Esophageal Propulsive Force: Esophageal Response To Acute Obstruction, Daniel H. Winship, F. Frank Zboralske Sep 1967

The Esophageal Propulsive Force: Esophageal Response To Acute Obstruction, Daniel H. Winship, F. Frank Zboralske

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The response of the normal human esophagus to an obstructing intraluminal bolus was investigated and compared to the response evoked by transient intraluminal distention. A balloon, immobilized within the esophagus by external attachment to a force transducer, was inflated with from 3 to 25 ml of air for from 3 to 210 sec. Pressure phenomena occurring in the esophagus were simultaneously recorded from the body of the esophagus above and below the balloon.

Transient distention (5 sec or less) with small volumes (5 ml or less) often evoked a secondary peristaltic wave in the esophagus distal to the balloon, but …

Nurse-Patient Interpretations Of The Nurse's Touch, Judith Ann Trowbridge Aug 1967

Nurse-Patient Interpretations Of The Nurse's Touch, Judith Ann Trowbridge

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to discover whether or not patients and nurses derived a similar meaning from pictures of a nurse touching a patient in various ways. Five by seven inch black and white photographs were shown to thirty patients and thirty registered nurses. The subjects were controlled in regard to sex, race, residence, language, and physical and emotional orientation. They were asked to focus upon the photographed nurse's touch and to tell in one or two words what meaning they felt that the nurse was trying to convey to the patient by her touch. Responses were recorded …

Nurses' Responses To Patients' Spiritual Needs, Janice Pearl Luchak Chance Aug 1967

Nurses' Responses To Patients' Spiritual Needs, Janice Pearl Luchak Chance

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This exploratory study had as its objective the identification of the spiritual needs of patients. Three aspects of the study were: (1) to identify the spiritual needs students of nursing recognized during the care of their patients; (2) to discover the type of behavior patients manifested which enabled the students to recognize these needs and, (3) to identify the spiritual care given to patients by students during their regular nursing assignments.

Thirty-seven senior students, enrolled in the baccalaureate programs of three Seventh-day Adventists colleges, used a questionnaire constructed for this study to identify spiritual needs after they had given nursing …

The Effects Of Particular Sounds On Certain Indices Of Cardio-Pulmonary Functions, Harold F. Googe, Jane Mundin Aug 1967

The Effects Of Particular Sounds On Certain Indices Of Cardio-Pulmonary Functions, Harold F. Googe, Jane Mundin

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of particular sounds upon certain indices of cardio-pulmonary function and the degree and pattern of changes which occurred in the indices. The specific physiological parameters chosen to be monitored were heart rate, respiratory rate, mean tidal volume, instantaneous minute volume, and oxygen consumption. The hypothesis was that particular sounds will cause changes in certain indices of cardio-pulmonary functions. This was a controlled experiment, in which nine healthy males and nine healthy females, of a denominational, medically oriented University listened to a specially constructed tape of background music interspersed with an …

Ethical Attitudes And Education Of A Group Of California Dietitians, Sharon L. Culpepper

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A questionnaire was developed to determine the ethical attitudes and education of a group of California dietitians. A group of 198 randomly selected individuals from the California Dietetic Association membership of 2,180 participated in the study.

Great diversity was exhibited in age, type of position held and total years of work experience in the sample group. Eighty-one per cent of the respondents were less than forty-nine years of age. The positions most frequently held by the participants were in hospital therapeutics and administration, teaching and schools, and consultant work. Sixty-three per cent were employed on either a full-time or part-time …

Studies Of The Mechanism By Which Chronic Metabolic Acidosis Augments Urinary Calcium Excretion In Man, Jacob Lemann Jr., John R. Litzow, Edward J. Lennon Aug 1967

Studies Of The Mechanism By Which Chronic Metabolic Acidosis Augments Urinary Calcium Excretion In Man, Jacob Lemann Jr., John R. Litzow, Edward J. Lennon

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

We carried out clearance studies in nine healthy adults and four patients with hypoparathyroidism before and after inducing stable metabolic acidosis with either NH4Cl or acetazolamide. Clearances were repeated in seven normal subjects and three of the patients 3 days after stopping these agents.

During acidosis in the normal subjects, serum ultrafilterable calcium concentration rose significantly, but inulin clearance fell to a greater extent, so that the calculated filtered load of calcium fell significantly. Despite this, urinary calcium excretion rose. Urinary calcium excretion remained elevated in the recovery studies when the serum ultrafilterable calcium concentration and filtered load …
