Diagnosis And Treatment Of Gonorrhea, Paul A. Kvale
Diagnosis And Treatment Of Gonorrhea, Paul A. Kvale
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The various methods for diagnosis of gonorrhea are reviewed. Gram-stained smear of urethral exudate in the mate is appropriate, but for the female emphasis is placed on the use of culture on Thayer-Martin medium. Currently effective modalities of treatment are detailed, pointing out that higher doses of antibiotics are generally required for females with pelvic inflammatory disease than for males with acute gonococcal urethritis. The necessity for follow-up is also discussed.
An Improved Method Of Staining Paraffin-Embedded Bone Marrow Sections, Wanda Pusey, A. R. Villanueva
An Improved Method Of Staining Paraffin-Embedded Bone Marrow Sections, Wanda Pusey, A. R. Villanueva
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Cytological detail is well demonstrated in an improved method of staining aspirated bone marrow sections embedded in paraffin. The tinctorial patterns of the stain resemble some of its predecessors; thus, cell counting and identification involve little difficulty. The method has proven reliable, reproducible and a valuable addition in the diagnosis of bone marrow disorders. It is a useful tool in research problems in which objectives are the study of the bone marrow.
Cardioregulatory Role Of The Abdominal Ganglion Of Aplysia Californica, George Maeda
Cardioregulatory Role Of The Abdominal Ganglion Of Aplysia Californica, George Maeda
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
An isolated heart-abdominal ganglion preparation of this mollusc was developed and used to study the cardioregulatory function of the ganglion and nerves. The heart was perfused with artificial sea water through an atrial cannula and the gastro-esophageal artery was catheterized for blood pressure monitoring. The presence and cardioregulatory effects of axons in the nerves was investigated by electrical stimulation. Fine-tipped glass microelectrodes inserted into ganglionic neurons were used to determine the relationship between the neuronal and cardiac activities.
The principal results are listed below.
- Primarily inhibitory responses are obtained from both right and left connective stimulation, with some evidence for …

Dissertations and Theses
The following was a research practicum instituted as an actual project for the State of Montana Welfare Department between June, 1970, and May, 1971. The project had a two-fold purpose in being conceived: one purpose was to fulfill a graduate school academic requirement; and the second purpose was to fulfill a responsibility to the people of Montana who would eventually gain some benefits from this project. The series of written documents that follow are the description of that project's conception and actualization in six Montana counties. The first part is the project idea and theory; the next two parts consist …

The Relationship Between Personality Factors Of Collegiate Football Players And Their Effectiveness On The Playing Field, Charles Williams
The Relationship Between Personality Factors Of Collegiate Football Players And Their Effectiveness On The Playing Field, Charles Williams
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Through the years there has been increasing interest in the investigation of the athlete's personality. Much emphasis has been placed on the psychological characteristics of athletes of a given age group and ability level. Coaches, trainers, and others involved with athletics believe that personality is an essential ingredient in developing a highly skilled individual. However, the ones in leadership seldom put forth explicit statements of such beliefs into a meaningful theory structure that can be assessed and therefore verified. Statement of the Problem: The purpose of this study was to determine whether differences in personality factors existed between groups of …

Hyperactivity In Children, Pat Luttmann
Hyperactivity In Children, Pat Luttmann
Student Scholarship
The provided document, written in 1971, explores the multifaceted nature of hyperactivity in children, primarily within the framework of minimal brain dysfunction or MBD. The author notes that while these children often appear physically normal, they struggle with a disorganized central nervous system that prevents them from processing environmental stimuli effectively. This neurological impairment manifests as a cluster of symptoms, most notably hyperkinesis, distractibility, impulsiveness, and emotional instability. The text emphasizes that the number of children identified with these disorders is increasing, partly due to medical advances that allow more children to survive difficult births.

Sub-Aversive Response Contingent Foot Shock As A Positive Reinforcer, Robert Lea Fulwiler
Sub-Aversive Response Contingent Foot Shock As A Positive Reinforcer, Robert Lea Fulwiler
All Master's Theses
Forty-eight rats were divided into 8 groups; four were maintained under normal conditions and the other four under sensory deprivation and tested at o, 3, 6, and 9 days after condition institution. The response was placing the head through a hole in the operant chamber and the stimulus (0, 1.2, 4, or 12 Vac) was contingent upon the response. Analysis ot variance disclosed significant differences (p<.01) between the deprived and the non-deprived groups at days 6 and 9; and a significant interaction between deprivation condition and time of test. No differences were shown between the stimulus intensities indicating that the stimulus did not have a reinforcing effect.

The Effect Of Early Postpartum Teaching Of Infant Feeding On Maternal Concern, Linda M. Richter, K. Judy Toews
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
An experimental study was conducted on thirty primiparae during the postpartum period to determine if individualized instruction regarding infant feeding would result in a lower level of maternal concern in this area. The study sample was randomly and evenly divided into a control and an experimental group. It was statistically determined that the two groups were homogeneous in regard to age, education, occupation, previous information (prenatal classes and reading) and help at home. The experimental group received individualized instruction by the researchers concerning their chosen method of infant feeding on the second postpartum day. There was no instruction given the …

This study compared the mandibular radius (center of the condyle to gnathion) with the mandibular planes (lower border and GoGn) utilizing serial lateral cephalograms on orthodontically treated and nontreated individuals. Three groups were employed as follows: Group 1 of 38 untreated individuals for serial data on growth alone; Group 2 of 13 patients with Class II, high angle, open bite malocclusions that had been treated with high pull headgear and the edgewise appliance (control representing the least amount of mandibular rotation during orthodontic treatment); and Group 3 of 54 randomly selected orthodontic patients to represent the average mandibular rotation during …
Bacteriuria As A Precursor Of Intracatheter Encrustation, Namcy Moll
Bacteriuria As A Precursor Of Intracatheter Encrustation, Namcy Moll
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The problem with which this study was concerned was the development of criteria that could be used to determine when urinary catheter changes were necessary. By determining when encrustation occurred, it was felt that some complications could be eliminated by changing catheters before obstruction occurred due to encrustation.
It was the purpose of this study to: 1) explore some indications for catheter change, 2) determine if encrustation of urinary catheters necessitates catheter change, and 3) estimate potential criteria for a routine time for catheter changes.
Forty-five catheters were examined after their removal from patients. Flow rates were determined on 33 …
The Effects Of A Topically Applied Anti-Inflammatory Agent On Root Resorption In The Replanted Teeth Of Canines, William L. Young
The Effects Of A Topically Applied Anti-Inflammatory Agent On Root Resorption In The Replanted Teeth Of Canines, William L. Young
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Root resorption is a constant finding on the roots of replanted teeth. In this study it was suggested that root resorption is perhaps related to inflammation and that teeth incubated in an anti-inflammatory agent such as triamcinolone acetonide, a corticosteroid, before replantation would have less resorption. To investigate this hypothesis nineteen mature teeth in five mongrel dogs were extracted and replanted. Ten of the teeth were incubated for five minutes in the steroid and nine control teeth for the same period in a saline solution. Before euthanizing the animals at one, three, five, and seven weeks, a clinical evaluation of …
Change In The Number Of Fibers And Nuclei In The Rat Soleus Muscle During Normal Development And Increased Work Load Exercise, John K. Pearson
Change In The Number Of Fibers And Nuclei In The Rat Soleus Muscle During Normal Development And Increased Work Load Exercise, John K. Pearson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Many orthodontists have desired to produce a permanent lengthening of a short upper lip. To produce a permanent increase in skeletal muscle mass, changes associated with hyperplasia would probably have to occur. If it would be possible to demonstrate in animals that skeletal muscle cells and corresponding deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) increased with exercise, clinical studies on the upper lip would be in order.
Male Sprague Dawley albino rats were used to study the effects of exercise and normal development. Increased work load exercise of the soleus muscle was induced by cutting the tendon of the synergestic gastrocnemius. Histological sections of …

The purpose of this study was to find out whether patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (C.O.P.D.) learn more from auditory or from visual teaching. Of the 30 patients in the sample, 10 used a programmed instruction booklet, 10 used a taped recording of the same programmed material and 10 were in a control group which received no specific teaching.
A pre-test was given to each of the patients who met the criteria for the study. One researcher gave the pre-test through an oral interview with the patient. After the pre-test, the patient received the teaching device assigned to him …
Using A Participating Relationship To Improve Teen-Age Unwed Mother's Self-Esteem, Linda Gail Reeves
Using A Participating Relationship To Improve Teen-Age Unwed Mother's Self-Esteem, Linda Gail Reeves
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The study was to provide an approach to help teen-age unwed mothers increase their feelings of self-esteem and thereby attain a conceptual buffer for better coping with life. Self-esteem was defined as individual perception of the worth of oneself relative to that of significant others. The hypothesis tested was that the participating relationship a community health nurse has with a teen-age unwed mother will significantly increase the mother's self-esteem as measured by statistical Q-Sort analysis.
A convenience sample of twenty teen-age unwed mothers was obtained from referrals from San Bernardino County Health, Welfare, and Probation Departments. The girls were between …
The Effect Of Elevated Glucose On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis In Genetically Diabetic Mice, Larry B. Thompson
The Effect Of Elevated Glucose On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis In Genetically Diabetic Mice, Larry B. Thompson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Infiltration to an injury site or area of bacterial contamination by polymorphonuclear leucocytes (or neutrophils) is an early and essential phase of the early inflammatory reaction. Their action on foreign matter is the most critical step taken by body defense mechanisms in the first 24 hours. Anything which interferes with that action, phagocytosis, greatly hampers early inflammation. This study was designed to see the effect of elevated glucose levels on neutrophil phagocytosis in a unique strain of genetically diabetic mice.
Twenty-two diabetic and twenty-four control female mice were used. Blood glucose determinations and total white counts were made on each …

A Technique For The Experimental Production Of Dry Socket In The Cat And An Evaluation Of Numerous Potential Etiologic Factors, Thomas F. Scott
A Technique For The Experimental Production Of Dry Socket In The Cat And An Evaluation Of Numerous Potential Etiologic Factors, Thomas F. Scott
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Dental dry socket has been attributed to a variety of etiologic factors without basic science research. Before a systematic attempt could be undertaken to determine the initiator/s of dry socket, if such exists, an experimental technique had to be developed which could consistently produce dry socket. A dental extraction socket infusion technique was developed with the cat that enabled the investigator to study some of the initiating factors which have been previously suggested as possible etiologic causes for the production of dry socket.
From the present study such factors as trauma, age, sex, site and number of extractions, lack of …
Histopathological Variations Of Periapical Granulomas And Radicular Cysts, Thanapen Kanchanasut
Histopathological Variations Of Periapical Granulomas And Radicular Cysts, Thanapen Kanchanasut
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The periapical dental granuloma and cyst is the most frequent sequela of pulpitis. These lesions are always intraosseous and often become quiescent after the acute phases are over, forming a space which primarily consists of chronic inflammatory tissue. This chronic inflammatory tissue usually appears as a one-centimeter area of punched out bone on the x-ray film and is referred to as a dental granuloma. Should epithelium choose to proliferate in this inflammatory area, it may undergo subsequent cystic degeneration forming the typical periapical cyst. While much has been written with regard to the etiology and treatment of the apical cyst …
The Response Of Gingival Tissues To Alterations In Ph, Robert C. Jann
The Response Of Gingival Tissues To Alterations In Ph, Robert C. Jann
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the histopathological and clinical changes that occurred when a continuous supply of exogenous acid or base, at varying pH, was delivered adjacent to the gingival crest of the monkey. A related goal was to develop a monkey model system which would deliver test solutions continuously and atraumatically, to the experimental gingival sites.
Two young adult female monkeys had a perfusion apparatus attached to certain maxillary teeth so that test solutions were deposited atraumatically to the marginal gingival tissues. During the experimental periods the animals were kept in primate restraining chairs and fed …
