Boron Movement In Soil Columns, Joseph William Stucki May 1972

Boron Movement In Soil Columns, Joseph William Stucki

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Three adsorption theories--Langmuir, B.E.T., and Freundlich--were applied to boron interaction with Aiken clay loam and Vernal sandy loam soils to determine which bests describes the system.

Column studies were conducted to obtain constants related to mass fluid flow and fluid dispersion within the column. An inert ion was used to obtain the pore volume and to calculate the fluid dispersion coefficient. These data were used to solve the material balance equation by the explicit numerical method developed by Lai for a digital computer. The output from the computer was a predicted profile boron distribution within the soil column.

The soil …

An examination was made of the acoustic characteristics of wind turbulence generated noise in a car traveling at 70 mph over smoothly paved highway with the driver's window down. The overall noise level was found to be at 112 dB SPL with the predominance of energy in the low frequencies. The study was concerned with the effects of such noise on human audition in terms of temporary threshold shift.

Twenty normal hearing young adults were exposed to a tape recording of wind noise for 15 minutes. Post-exposure auditory thresholds at seven discreet frequencies were compared to pre-exposure auditory thresholds at …

Nutrients And Phytoplankton In Hyrum Lake, Robert Bruce Murray May 1972

Nutrients And Phytoplankton In Hyrum Lake, Robert Bruce Murray

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The current investigation indicates that the routine appearance of a noxious blue-green algal bloom of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, in Hyrum Lake, a reservoir in northern Utah is a result of excess phosphorus. Data indicate that the algal growth is initiated by phosphorus liberated from the phosphorus rich bottom sediments, and at a time when nitrogen is present in excess in the lake relative to phosphorus.

Results indicate that the Little Bear River is the major source of nitrogen and phosphorus contributing to the eutrophication of Hyrum Lake. Nitrogen and phosphorus fluctuations in the Little Bear River proved to be concurrent with …

A Survey Of The Selecting And Governing Of Girls' Precision Drill Teams In Selected High Schools In Utah, Jean M. Workman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A survey was taken of selected high schools in Utah to determine their methods of selecting girls for a drill team and also how they organize and govern these groups.

There are similarities in the requirements the girls have to meet in order to be selected: age limit, grade average , skill, rhythm, coordination and flexibility. Most schools have tryouts, but not all. Those that do, have some pre-training before tryouts.

Some of the schools just use class time for practice while others include before and after school. Summer practice is held by most of the schools varying from two …

Stimulus Manipulation In Articulation Therapy With A Hearing Impaired Child, Walter Eugene White May 1972

Stimulus Manipulation In Articulation Therapy With A Hearing Impaired Child, Walter Eugene White

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Severely hearing impaired individuals typically exhibit speech that is unintelligible and systematic instruction in speech has not effectively alleviated all of the misarticulations found in the speech of these individuals. Behavior modification is a promising development which has meaningful application to the modification of defective articulation by hearing impaired children.

The purpose of this study was to as certain the feasibility of implementing a specific program of stimulus manipulation to alter the articulation of the |TS| phoneme as uttered by one severely hearing impaired individual. The training program was structured in a sequence of four operant training conditions. Pre-training tests, …

The expired air was collected in a Douglas bag; then, gas samples were taken from the bag and were analyzed for oxygen and carbon dioxide percentages. The respiratory quotient was determined from the volume of expired air …

A Clinical Study Of Cuspid And Incisor Retraction Using The Mechanics Of Charles H. Tweed, Eugene R. Humphries May 1972

A Clinical Study Of Cuspid And Incisor Retraction Using The Mechanics Of Charles H. Tweed, Eugene R. Humphries

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A controlled clinical study of cuspid and incisor retraction using the mechanics advocated by Charles H. Tweed on class I four first bicuspid extraction cases was conducted. A carefully restricted sample of seven patients, three boys and four girls, was treated by seven graduate orthodontic students at Loma Linda University.

Measurements were made at monthly intervals to assess cuspid, incisor, and molar movements. Data were collected at each appliance adjustment to evaluate pain, difficulty, length of appointment, and the observations and impressions of each clinician regarding the technique.

The mean rates of cuspid movement during the cuspid retraction phase of …

An Assessment Of Gestural And Pantomimic Deficit In Aphasic Patients, Len W. Pickett Apr 1972

An Assessment Of Gestural And Pantomimic Deficit In Aphasic Patients, Len W. Pickett

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

A review of the literature suggests two explanations for gestural deficits in the aphasic patient. One view of the problem suggests that gestural impairment in the aphasic patient is related to a general communicative deficit. Another concept of the problem which has received more scientific support suggests that gestural deficit is secondary to a limb apraxia and is quite independent of the severity of aphasia.

The present study, therefore, was designed to investigate three primary questions:

1. Can a gestural test battery be developed which can reliably measure the gestural ability of aphasic patients?

2. Is there a relationship between …

The Role Of Anxiety And Arousal Attribution In Cheating, Richard A. Dienstbier Apr 1972

The Role Of Anxiety And Arousal Attribution In Cheating, Richard A. Dienstbier

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Previous research indicated that anticipating arousal symptoms (rather than benign) from a placebo pill reduced inhibiting emotion in men, resulting in more cheating. The effect did not occur for women. Using 180 males, Study I tested whether the placebo effect was due to mere attention to arousal symptoms, or whether attribution to the pill was required. In the placebo- attribution condition the arousal placebo facilitated cheating (p < .02). The effect did not occur for symptom-attention controls who received no pill, and the conditions differed (p < .02).Study II tested whether women failed to respond to the placebo manipulation due to higher anxiety. Under one of four stress levels, each of 240 women received the benign or arousal placebo. More cheated with the arousal placebo only under low stress (p <.035), and stress conditions differed (p < .025). The interaction of attribution manipulations with the conflicting emotions of the cheating situation is discussed.

Understory Characteristics Related To Site Quality For Aspen In Utah, James H. Warner, Kimball T. Harper Apr 1972

Understory Characteristics Related To Site Quality For Aspen In Utah, James H. Warner, Kimball T. Harper

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

An analysis has been made of the basic ecology of aspen forests of the mountainous areas of Utah and northern Arizona. Forty-nine study areas have been examined in respect to density, height and age of the tree cover, tree reproduction, and composition and biomass production of the understory. A graphic model of interspecific assocations among prevalent understory species has been prepared by a cluster-analysis procedure based on presence and absence of species in 1,225 small quadrats (0.25 m2) uniformly distributed among the 49 stands. The model separates species of relatively stable as opposed to rapidly seral aspen forests. …

Surveillance Of Legal Abortions In The United States, 1970, Judith Bourne, James Kahn, S. Beach Conger, Carl Tyler Jr. Apr 1972

Surveillance Of Legal Abortions In The United States, 1970, Judith Bourne, James Kahn, S. Beach Conger, Carl Tyler Jr.

United States Public Health Resources

In 1969, a series of epidemiologic studies for abortion in the United States was begun at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. Unwanted pregnancy is one of the most prevalent and potent public health problems in this and many other countries, and in almost all societies abortion is an inevitable concomitant of unwanted pregnancies.

In 1970 we concentrated primarily on three aspects of the rapidly changing phenomenon of abortion in the United States, attempting first to ascertain how many legal abortions are performed and where they are performed; second to describe the population of women who obtain …
