Ua35/11 Student Honors Bulletin, Vol. I, No. 1, Wku Honors Program Jan 1973

Ua35/11 Student Honors Bulletin, Vol. I, No. 1, Wku Honors Program

WKU Administration Documents

Articles written by honors program students. They were originally research projects, class papers or essays written for academic credit, but in each case the student has done further work editing and improving his or her manuscript for this publication. The articles represent a broad range of interests and disciplines, and they indicate a healthy attempt on the part of at least some students to dig for deeper knowledge and understanding than is usually associated with undergraduate study.

Reentry, Gordon Moe Jan 1973

Reentry, Gordon Moe

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

There are two ways in which impulses can be generated: one is by the spontaneous discharge of a pacemaker cell in either the normal site or a subsidiary site, and the other is by reentry. The concept of reentry is a very old one postulated by clinical cardiologists many years before its demonstration.

Mechanisms Of Supraventricular Tachycardia, Benjamin J. Scherlag, Ralph Lazzara Jan 1973

Mechanisms Of Supraventricular Tachycardia, Benjamin J. Scherlag, Ralph Lazzara

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In summary, we have found a close association between the stress of A-V nodal conduction and the occurrence of atrial dispersion or aberration. We could not explain atrial dispersion on the basis of incomplete recovery of atrial activity, slowing of atrial conduction, or the occurrence of atrial fusion. We postulate that the phenomenon of dispersion of atrial activation is related to the functional dissociation within the A-V node seen during situations which stress A-V conduction. This phenomenon may represent a mechanism whereby a second area of "turnaround" other than the A-V node is involved in reentry atrial tachyarrhythmias. Indeed, such …

Ventricular Tachyarrhythmias, Borys Surawicz Jan 1973

Ventricular Tachyarrhythmias, Borys Surawicz

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The mechanisms of ventricular tachyarrhythmias fall into two broad categories of increased automaticity and reentry. It is usually difficult to differentiate clinically between the two mechanisms; however, I plan to discuss certain approaches that may be helpful in this regard.

An Introduction To The Third Annual Symposium On Respiratory Failure, James P. Baker Jan 1973

An Introduction To The Third Annual Symposium On Respiratory Failure, James P. Baker

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The rapid development of knowledge, techniques, and equipment in the area of respiratory care has both greatly improved and complicated the care of the patient with respiratory failure. Due to this progress, the physician who has an intermittent opportunity to care for these types of patients is at a major disadvantage. This publication will reach a considerably wider audience than had the opportunity to attend the symposium, and we hope it will extend our program to many other concerned physicians.

The Basic Principles Of Acid-Base Regulation, Orhan Muren Jan 1973

The Basic Principles Of Acid-Base Regulation, Orhan Muren

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In summary, arterial gas studies including pH determinations can be vitally important in the diagnosis and management of patients with a variety of serious medical problems. These studies should be interpreted in the light of clinical and other necessary laboratory findings.

Non-Ventilator Management Of Respiratory Failure: The Ventimask, William B. Hunt Jr. Jan 1973

Non-Ventilator Management Of Respiratory Failure: The Ventimask, William B. Hunt Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

This paper will detail the conservative management of acute respiratory failure in patients with chronic respiratory failure due to chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It is important to recognize that this is a very specific group of patients. They have had a chronic hypoxia and hypercarbia for months or years preceding their current episode of acute respiratory failure.

Principles Of Inhalation Therapy, Walter J. O'Donohue Jr. Jan 1973

Principles Of Inhalation Therapy, Walter J. O'Donohue Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

With the increasing complexity of ventilatory equipment and the rapid development of new techniques for respiratory care, it has become progressively more difficult for the average physician to keep pace with clinical and technical advancements. The management of acute respiratory failure is now a demanding art which requires a broad knowledge of cardiopulmonary physiology and sophistication in the use of complicated equipment. Careful attention to detail is often the critical factor that determines survival. The mortality from acute respiratory failure has been substantially reduced in respiratory intensive care units where there are well trained teams of physicians, nurses, and technicians …

How To Get Patients On And Off Respirators, Terring W. Heironimus Iii Jan 1973

How To Get Patients On And Off Respirators, Terring W. Heironimus Iii

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

This title implies that one has already decided that one's patient needs to be artificially ventilated, that is, that he is in respiratory failure. How does one diagnose respiratory failure? Much of what I have to say in this regard is in terms of arbitrary limits, values, and guidelines. Since these guidelines are arbitrary, there may exist legitimate grounds for differences of opinion about some of them. However, we have found these guidelines to be quite helpful, and experience would indicate that they are reasonable.

Renal Hypertension, Eugene F. Poutasse Jan 1973

Renal Hypertension, Eugene F. Poutasse

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The advances in our knowledge of renal hypertension over the last 75 years represents outstanding accomplishments in experimental and clinical medicine. A review of the highlights of this important investigation in hypertension should begin with Tigerstedt and Bergman's work in Scandinavia which demonstrated in 1898, that extracts of kidney possessed a hypertensive action. They gave the name "renin" to the impure substance which produced this effect. For the next 30 years much work was done on the vasoconstrictor action of extracts of the adrenal medulla, the nervous system and the kidney.

Wilms' Tumor And Neuroblastom: Results Of Therapy, Harold M. Maurer Jan 1973

Wilms' Tumor And Neuroblastom: Results Of Therapy, Harold M. Maurer

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Wilms' tumor and neuroblastoma are numerically among the most common noncerebral malignant solid tumors in children. The purpose of this report is to describe the recent results of therapy.

Surgery Of The Genitalia In Children, Charles J. Devine Jan 1973

Surgery Of The Genitalia In Children, Charles J. Devine

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

I shall confine my paper to the external male genitalia. Most of the problems that we have dealt with have been congenital from simple meatal strictures to more severe, although not necessarily more serious, situations. In the last 18 years, I have worked closely with Dr. Charles Horton, and much of this report represents our joint efforts.

Meaningful Toxicology, Robert V. Blanke Jan 1973

Meaningful Toxicology, Robert V. Blanke

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The scope of toxicology, therefore, may extend from the study of a single element such as lead to a complex, chemically uncharacterized substance such as snake venom; from an overdose of heroin to the effects of long-term exposure to low levels of pesticides on anticonvulsant therapy. For the purpose of this discussion, we shall narrow the limits of the broad field of toxicology considerably, but it is important to be aware of the breadth and depth to which toxicology may at times extend.

Quality Control In The Office Laboratory, Joseph H. Riddick Jr. Jan 1973

Quality Control In The Office Laboratory, Joseph H. Riddick Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

First, how can the quality of the office laboratory be assured and documented? Second, how can this information be disseminated to legislators and the general public? The first is an easily solved technical problem toward which this paper is directed. The second and probably the most difficult is a media problem beyond the scope of a technical journal.

Evaluation Of Prepackaged "Kits", Rex B. Conn Jr. Jan 1973

Evaluation Of Prepackaged "Kits", Rex B. Conn Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Prepackaged laboratory kits for performing diagnostic procedures are frequently the most suitable alternative in the selection of laboratory methods, especially in the physicians' offices and small laboratories. Because of the previous lack of governmental regulations covering the manufacture of kits, many kits now on the market do not perform adequately and may produce misleading results. Each laboratory must evaluate each type of kit before it is put into routine use. This evaluation should include a review of published experimental data, comparison of results using the kit to results using a reference method and an experimental evaluation of the kit in …

Verbal Reward & Punishment & Need For Approval In Schizophrenics, Chester Gay Jr. Jan 1973

Verbal Reward & Punishment & Need For Approval In Schizophrenics, Chester Gay Jr.

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The current study was designed to further examine the effects of verbal reward and punishment on task performance of schizophrenics. The relationship of need for approval of schizophrenics (as measured by the M-C SDS) to performance and to reward and punishment was also examined. Verbal reward and punishment along with need for approval served as independent variables. Task performance was the dependent variable. The following major questions were asked:

  1. Does verbal reward and punishment significantly influence performance of schizophrenics?
  2. How is the personality construct, need for approval, related to performance of tasks by schizophrenics?
  3. Is there a significant interaction between …
