The Relationship Of The Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire Inventory To Clients Of A Methadone Maintenance Program, Margaret Ann Neale

Theses and Dissertations

An original study was undertaken to examine the relationship of clients of Project Jump Street, Inc., a methadone maintenance program, to changes in personality factors as measured by R.B. Cattell's Sixteen Personality Factor Inventory, to compare the national norms of drug addicts/methadone users to the result of the 16 PF of clients of Project Jump Street, Inc., and to determine if significant differences appear among treatment phase I, phase II, and phase III.

Twenty-one clients of the program, seven subjects in each of phases I, II, and III, were given the 16 PF by their counselors between September 10 and …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Some Arylalkenyl And Arylepoxyalkyl Hydrogen Succinates And Hydrogen Glutarates As Inhibitors Of Rat Liver Β-Hydroxy-Β-Methylglutaryl Coenzyme A Reductase, Paul Emil Marecki Jan 1974

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Some Arylalkenyl And Arylepoxyalkyl Hydrogen Succinates And Hydrogen Glutarates As Inhibitors Of Rat Liver Β-Hydroxy-Β-Methylglutaryl Coenzyme A Reductase, Paul Emil Marecki

Theses and Dissertations

Atherosclerotic disease is an almost universal phenomenon and increases in severity and frequency with increasing age. Atherosclerosis may contribute to several disorders including bursting of an artery, blockage of an artery, or induction of arterial clotting. The culmination of these diseases is usually premature since at the time of death the unaffected organs are in reasonably satisfactory condition and could have operated for several more years. Among the many factors which act in concert to produce the disease, serum cholesterol levels play a central role. It has been suggested that the lowering of cholesterol levels will provide an effective means …

The Immediate Recall Performance Of Language Deviant Children For Three Kinds Of Verbal Materials, Donna L. De Shaw Jan 1974

The Immediate Recall Performance Of Language Deviant Children For Three Kinds Of Verbal Materials, Donna L. De Shaw

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Current research on language deviant children has included studies of two facets of short term memory-span and accuracy. Investigators have found the language deviant have shorter spans, and that they reproduce material with errors. Menyuk (1969) hypothesized that the difficulty lay either "in their short term memory capacity or the perceptual devices used" (p. 155). Weiner (1972) listed a number of possible sources of difficulty in repeating material including the manipulation of verbal symbols. Such manipulation may fit the encoding process of Aaronson's (1967) model of short term memory which includes an "encoding" stage where items are readied for retention …

Teaching Hearing-Impaired Children Language Through The Use Of Musical Rhythm, Naomi Anne Banducci

Dissertations and Theses

While several authors have indicated specific methods for teaching rhythm, there is no single, comprehensive source available which could serve as a teaching guide in this important area of aural rehabilitation. The current paper represents an initial attempt to fulfill this need. The purpose ot this paper is to provide a survey of the different methods and avenues for teaching the rhythm of language to hearing impaired children.

Journey In A Forgotten Land- Part 2: Food And Drought: The Broader Picture, Norman Miller Jan 1974

Journey In A Forgotten Land- Part 2: Food And Drought: The Broader Picture, Norman Miller

Dartmouth Scholarship

Kenya and Ethiopia handled the drought very differently, both in action and public statements. Ethiopian officials in the south spoke openly and candidly about famine and starvation and willingly gave access to mortality statistics. They also bitterly criticized the former regime for its inept attempt to deal with the famine. Kenya's administrators were cautious and guarded; they denied that any great suffering had occurred and sought to avoid publicity. Missionaries in northern Kenya were advised to give aid without fanfare, not to write home about the famine, and to keep conditions confidential.

Small Area Variations In Health Care Delivery, John E. Wennberg Md, Mph Dec 1973

Small Area Variations In Health Care Delivery, John E. Wennberg Md, Mph

Dartmouth Scholarship

Health information about total populations is a prerequisite for sound decision-making and planning in the health care field. Experience with a population-based health data system in Vermont reveals that there are wide variations in resource input, utilization of services, and expenditures among neighboring communities. Results show prima facie inequalities in the input of resources that are associated with income transfer from areas of lower expenditure to areas of higher expenditure. Variations in utilization indicate that there is considerable uncertainty about the effectiveness of different levels of aggregate, as well as specific kinds of, health services. Informed choices in the public …

Right-Left Visual Field Performances Of Congenitally Deaf And Normal Hearing Subjects, Merle Applebaum-Rosenberg Dec 1973

Right-Left Visual Field Performances Of Congenitally Deaf And Normal Hearing Subjects, Merle Applebaum-Rosenberg

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

The notion of cerebral dominance has been explored since the time of Broca. Two non-invasive techniques designed to assess hemispheric dominance have subsequently been developed. These two methods are commonly referred to as dichotic listening (simultaneous auditory stimulation) and rapid visual field stimulation (tachistoscopic viewing).

It has been found in dichotic listening studies that when verbal material is presented simultaneously to both ears, the stimuli are correctly identified most often in the right ear. Similar results have been found in tachistoscopic studies, with verbal material eliciting a right visual field advantage. Collectively, these findings have been used to support a …

A Comparison Of Aphasic And Non-Brain Injured Adults On A Dichotic Cv-Syllable Listening Task, Janet E. Shanks Dec 1973

A Comparison Of Aphasic And Non-Brain Injured Adults On A Dichotic Cv-Syllable Listening Task, Janet E. Shanks

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

Normal listeners traditionally show a right ear preference for dichotically presented speech stimuli, and a left ear preference for dichotically presented non-speech stimuli. Although some inter-subject variability is observed within and between groups of non-brain damaged subjects, the performance of the group as a whole is rather predictable and homogeneous. However, results from experiments in which brain damaged subjects have been studied have been less straightforward. Although left brain damaged subjects have consistently shown a bilateral deficit in reporting dichotic speech stimuli, a great deal of variability in performance is observed within the groups. Further study of brain damaged individuals, …

Electrical Alternans In Cardiac Tamponade, Andreas P. Niarchos Dec 1973

Electrical Alternans In Cardiac Tamponade, Andreas P. Niarchos

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Of nine patients with pericardial effusion due to various causes, four developed cardiac tamponade. Electrical alternans was present In all four, being total in three, and ventricular in one. From the diagnostic point of view, the alternans corresponded with the clinical diagnosis of cardiac tamponade and the radiological signs of a large pericardial effusion. The pericardial fluid was hemorrhagic in three patients and transudate (hydropericardium) in the fourth. In two patients alternans was present with heart rates below 100 per minute. Apart from the exact (1:1) type of electrical alternans, three new types are described; a 2:1, 3:1 and a …

The Effectiveness Of Oxandrolone In Promoting Linear Growth In Growth Hormone Deficient Children, Charles B. Wolf, Raymond C. Mellinger, Lewis B. Morrow, M. Saeed-Uz Zafar

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

This two-year study consisted of a comparison of oxandrolone and growth hormone for the treatment of five children with documented growth hormone deficiency. Previously, androgens have been reported to be relatively ineffective in accelerating linear growth In growth hormone deficient children. Oxandrolone was administered for one year. Growth hormone was added in the second six months and then was given as a single agent in the third six months. Growth accelerated markedly in all patients. Only one child showed more rapid growth with the addition of growth hormone while two children actually grew more rapidly under the Influence of oxandrolone …

Chlorophyll Levels And Leaf Chlorplast Ultrastructure As Ecotypic Characters In Xanthium Strumarium L., Farag Abdulrahman Dec 1973

Chlorophyll Levels And Leaf Chlorplast Ultrastructure As Ecotypic Characters In Xanthium Strumarium L., Farag Abdulrahman

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The major objective of the work was to clarify some of the adaptive mechanisms that a common widespread species would show as a possible requirement for survival in its natural habitats. Analysis of various populations of Xanthium (cocklebur) indicated differences in chlorophyll levels and leaf chloroplasts ultrastructure between populations. The study also revealed some insight into intrapopulational variation in dark requirements for flowering of selected populations. In addition, caloric values of dried leaf material of cocklebur were analyzed for interpopulational differences. It was evident that higher chlorophyll levels are correlated with increase in latitude of origin and a corresponding decrease …

Efficacy Of Betaprone With Ultraviolet Irradiation On Hepatitis B Antigen In Human Plasma Pools (A Retrospective Study), Gerald A. Logrippo, Hajime Hayashi Dec 1973

Efficacy Of Betaprone With Ultraviolet Irradiation On Hepatitis B Antigen In Human Plasma Pools (A Retrospective Study), Gerald A. Logrippo, Hajime Hayashi

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

In a retrospective study, hepatitis B antigen (HB Ag) was found in 14 lots of human plasma pools (16-20 liters each) that had been treated by the combined Betaprone (BPL) with ultraviolet (UV) irradiation procedure. No evidence of clinical hepatitis was found during a six-month follow-up after 185.2 liters of HB Ag positive plasma were Infused into 257 patients. Since HB Ag positive blood products treated by BPL with UV produced no clinical hepatitis, it is evident that our treatment is efficacious against hepatitis virus agents.
