Verbal Models Provided For Mentally Retarded Children By Parents, Lance Tsugawa
Verbal Models Provided For Mentally Retarded Children By Parents, Lance Tsugawa
Dissertations and Theses
Recent investigation has focused on the nature of adult-child verbal interactions. The research has examined the language of mothers and other adults when assembled with both normal and retarded children. The present study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that mothers of children with Down's Syndrome and mothers of normal children would present different language characteristics to a Down's Syndrome child versus a normal child. Type-token ratio, a measure of the subject's language diversification, was used as the behavioral measure.
The findings indicated that all mothers presented smaller type token ratios to the Down's Syndrome child than those addressed to …

Counseling Needs Of Mastectomy Patients: Reach To Recovery Program, Elaine Lowe
Counseling Needs Of Mastectomy Patients: Reach To Recovery Program, Elaine Lowe
Dissertations and Theses
A descriptive and exploratory study of the counseling needs of mastectomy patients and how they are met, and of the Reach to Recovery program through the American Cancer Society as a way of meeting these needs.
The author surveyed the professional literature and, briefly, some popular literature on the subject. In addition, a questionnaire was addressed to a group of Portland Reach to Recovery volunteers who served as a target population, one of whom was interviewed more fully.

Studies In Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis, Theodore Ronald Simon
Studies In Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis, Theodore Ronald Simon
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
[From the Introduction] This study serves to define the population at risk for developing slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). Although epidemiological studies of this disease have been completed, this large sample helps to confirm the earlier work. Moreover, it characterizes the relationship of this sample with previous samples and hence evaluates the contention that the results of other studies on this sample are based on a typical group of SCFE victims.

"Sensory" Interference In A Word-Color Matching Task, John H. Flowers
"Sensory" Interference In A Word-Color Matching Task, John H. Flowers
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Two experiments measured RTs for matching sequentially displayed color names to color patches. Experiment I demonstrated that printing the name in an incongruent color produced longer RTs than when the name was printed in black ink or a congruent colored ink, provided the time interval between the name display and the color patch display was brief (less than 100 msec). This interference was attenuated with longer delays. In Experiment II, a wider range of irrelevant colors was combined with the name display, and RT was found to be correlated with the colorimetric dissimilarity between the name and the irrelevant color. …
Toward Meaningful Protection Of Worker Health And Safety, Joseph A. Page
Toward Meaningful Protection Of Worker Health And Safety, Joseph A. Page
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
In the annals of job health and safety, 1974 was a signal year. It produced an epidemic of occupational liver cancer associated with vinyl chloride disclosure of a plan to soft-pedal federal regulation of industrial hazards in return for contributions to the 1972 Nixon reelection campaign, and the publication of a brace of exposes decrying the human toll taken by workplace perils. These events furnish hard evidence that the bright hopes raised by passage of the landmark Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 remain far from fulfillment.
In the search for reasons for this ostensible failure, two books present …
The Creation, Development, And Design Of A Course For Providing Missionaries At The Language Training Mission In Provo, Utah, With The Necessary Communication Skills To Teach The Gospel To The Hearing Impaired Who Use The American Sign Language, Byron F. Crookston
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to develop a course outline to begin the teaching of the American Sign Language at the Language Training Mission in Provo, Utah. Presently there is no program offered to train missionaries to teach the eight discussions to the hearing impaired who use sign language and fingerspelling to communicate. This study attempts to provide such a course outline that can later be developed into a complete training program.
To establish a criterion for this course, existing theories and curriculum guides for teaching sign language were reviewed and summarized. A survey for training interpreters, particularly in …

A Systematic Investigation Of Warning Stimulus Modality Effects On Two-Way Active Shuttle Avoidance Performance In Rats, James Paul Villaume
A Systematic Investigation Of Warning Stimulus Modality Effects On Two-Way Active Shuttle Avoidance Performance In Rats, James Paul Villaume
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Three students systematically investigated the hypothesis of Rosic, Frontali and Bignami (1969) that certain stimuli facilitate higher levels of avoidance performance (i.e., more correct responses) because of their ability to generate greater amounts of unconditioned motor activity during the stimulus presentation. Experiment I showed that buzzer, tone and light stimuli produce different amounts of unconditioned motor activity in rats, with the buzzer generating the most activity and the light generating the least. In Experiment II, the introduction of non-contingent shock resulted in a reduction in motor activity levels, but the buzzer still produced higher levels of activity than the light. …
