Technetium Pyrophosphate Myocardial Scanning In Acute Myocardial Infarction, Arunkumar N. Mehta, Sidney Goldstein, Daniel S. Marks, Albert Kasenter, William R. Eyler
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Technetium 99m pyrophosphate (99mTCPyP) accumulates in recently infarcted myocardium and can be detected by external imaging techniques. This study was performed to evaluate the ability of this isotope to identify the presence of acute myocardial infarction. In 82 patients admitted to a coronary care unit with chest pain of varying etiology, scan was positive in all 13 patients with acute transmural myocardial infarction and in 23 of 27 patients with nontransmural myocardial infarction. The scan was negative in 37 of 42 patients without evidence of recent infarction. Four of the remaining five patients in this group had unstable angina pectoris. …

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
In a review of 68 patients with dissecting thoracic aorta aneurysm (DTAA), eight patients (11.7%) were found to have painless dissection. Three of the eight patients presented with gross aortic insufficiency (Al). Angiography on a fourth patient, who had severe hypertension, showed Type III DTAA. Three other patients had either dilatation of the ascending aorta or a possible mediastinal mass, according to chest roentgenograms. One patient received treatment for suspected myocardial infarction with cardiogenic shock. A high index of suspicion in patients with unexplained Al, severe hypertension and a mediastinal mass or dilatation of the ascending aorta, coupled with the …

A Classification Scheme For Medical Expenditures, James Veney, Arnold Kaluzny
A Classification Scheme For Medical Expenditures, James Veney, Arnold Kaluzny
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Medical care represents a significant portion of society's response to problems affecting social welfare. While the problems surrounding medical care are complex, a major part of these problems can be attributed to the fact that medical care expenditures are viewed indiscriminately without regard for the nature of the expenditures themselves. This paper presents a framework to differentiate various types of medical care expenditures. The paper argues that medical care expenditures can be classified as either instrumental-consummatory or as external-internal relative to the medical care system. The consequences of this classification and some conclusions which may be drawn from it are …

A Comparison Of A Step-By-Step Versus An All-In-One Approach In Teaching Plaque Control, Charles R. Woofter
A Comparison Of A Step-By-Step Versus An All-In-One Approach In Teaching Plaque Control, Charles R. Woofter
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Using plaque scores as the measurement criterion, two different methods of teaching plaque control skills were tested. Based on initial plaque scores, 25 patients with periodontal disease were paired and divided into two groups: a "step-by-step" and "all-in-one" group. The subjects of both groups were given four one-half hour appointments of instruction. Members of the "step-by-step" group were taught in three successive appointments a horizontal scrub toothbrushing method, how to floss and how to use the Perio Aid. All members of the "all-in-one" group were taught how to use all three oral hygiene instruments at the first appointment. No additional …
Apical Closure Induction Using Bone Growth Factors And Mineral Trioxide Aggregate, Kenneth W. Tittle
Apical Closure Induction Using Bone Growth Factors And Mineral Trioxide Aggregate, Kenneth W. Tittle
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study compared the ability of three different bone growth factor combinations with that of Ca(OH)2 to stimulate apical closure as well as the effectiveness of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) as an apical barrier. Fifty-six roots of second and fourth mandibular premolars of seven six- month old beagle dogs were used. Periradicular lesions were created over a four week period. The canals were cleaned and shaped and filled with Ca(OH)2 for one week. They were then irrigated and received one of seven different treatments in a balanced design. Growth factors were placed in a carboxymethylcellulose carrier and delivered …
Role Of Cytochrome P-450 In Methemoglobin Formation By Primaquine With Hamster Liver Microsomes, Tommy L. Hicks
Role Of Cytochrome P-450 In Methemoglobin Formation By Primaquine With Hamster Liver Microsomes, Tommy L. Hicks
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The role of cytochrome P-450 in in vitro methemoglobin formation by primaquine was investigated through a series of experiments with golden-Syrian hamsters, treated before sacrificing with phenobarbital or 20-methylcholanthrene to increase the cytochrome P-450 content or with cobaltous chloride to cause its decrease. To determine the extent of induction in the liver microsomal cytochrome P-450-dependent mixed-function oxidases, cytochrome P-450 content and formaldehyde from the 0-demethylation of p-nitroanisole were measured. A 90% increase occurred in cytochrome P-450 content with phenobarbital pretreatment and an increase of 102% was observed in p-nitroanisole 0-demethylation. Formaldehyde from primaquine increased 64%. The methylcholanthrene treatment produced a …

Some Aspects Of Steroids Radioimmunoassay (Ria) Involved In The Study Of Weak Estrous Phenomenon Of Swamp Buffalo, Maneewan Kamonpatana
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
The paper illustrates some aspects and problems of steroids RIA findings, obtained during the studies on the problem of weak estrous in swamp buffaloes. The work described herein which stem from three aspects of steroids RIA; 1) chromatographic technique of steroids separation 2) immunoreactivity of labelled I steroids and displacement efficiency; 3) technique of the separation of free and bound fractions. The nonaffinity and low displacement efficiency are also discussed.

Effects Of Intrarenal Artery Perfusion On Kidney Function In The Dog, Narongsak Chaiyabutr, Amra Malila
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Effects of intrarenal artery perfusion on kidney function in the dog. Either the hypertonic solution (537 mOsm/kg) or the hypotonic solution (27 mOsm/kg) were infused directly into left or right renal artery at the rate of 2.5 ml/min instead of the control isotonic saline solution (280 mOsm/kg). During experimental period the contralateral kidney received isotonic saline solution continuously as during the control period. Infusion of hypertonic saline solution, raising sodium concentration in that renal artery by 4.59 ± 1.18 (SD) μEq/ml, caused a significant increase in V, UNa .V and VCl.V. Hypertonic lithium and rubidium chloride of the same osmolality …

Normal values of serum Ca, P and ALP in horses in relation to age, breed and environment were studied. Mean serum Ca, Р and ALP in mixed breed horses, age 1 to 6 years were 11.80 ± 1.25, 3.29 ± 0.65 and 7.76 ±2.31, age 7 to 12 years were 12.10 ±0.99, 2.84 ± 0.66 and 6.06± 1.46 respectively. Serum ALP activity of thoroughbreds and ponies were not significant different from that of mixed breed. The differences in P concentration among breeds were significant. A wide range of serum ALP activity was observed among horses raised in different areas. The …

A Comparative Analysis Of Tests For Central Auditory Function And Tests For Auditory Processing, Lynnee C. Luckett
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of the present investigation was to determine whether there was a relationship between the results obtained from tests of auditory language performance and those obtained from tests of central auditory performance. The performances of ten learning disabled children were compared with the performances of ten normal achievers on the six auditory language subtests of the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities and the staggered spondaic word test and Willeford's tests of central auditory processing abilities. The two groups were matched according to sex, age, and socioeconomic status. Only children having normal peripheral hearing and an IQ within normal range …
