Menstrual Cycle As Focus Of Study And Self-Reports Of Moods And Behaviors, Paula Englander-Golden, Mary R. Whitmore, Richard A. Dienstbier
Menstrual Cycle As Focus Of Study And Self-Reports Of Moods And Behaviors, Paula Englander-Golden, Mary R. Whitmore, Richard A. Dienstbier
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Retrospective questionnaires show cyclical variations in moods and behaviors across the menstrual cycle. However, results obtained from daily mood questionnaires are inconsistent. In the present study, which ran for 11 weeks, self-report measures of menstrual symptomatology, using the 8-factor Moos (1968, 1969 a, c) Menstrual Distress Questionnaire (MDQ), were investigated. The MDQ was administered under conditions that made the menstrual cycle a salient (retrospective questionnaire) or not a salient (daily questionnaire) part of the study. The study included women who were taking and not taking oral contraceptives. A 2 × 3 analysis of variance (with the two groups of women …

A Comparison Of Exercise Responses During Acute Exposure To Hypobaria In Exercise Trained Males With Coronary Heart Disease And Healthy, Sedentary Males, David Lowell Parker
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
This investigation was conducted to evaluate effects of acute altitude exposure on selected pulmonary, cardiovascular, metabolic, and psychological variables measured at rest, during, and after submaximal exercise. Comparisons were made between a group of men with coronary heart disease who were participants in an exercise rehabilitation program (trained CHD's) and a group of healthy, asymptomatic, and sedentary individuals (HI's).
Nine male trained CHD's and 10 male HI's participated in the study, which was conducted during an 8-week period. Initially, all subjects performed a maximal stress test on a bicycle ergometer at 1576m. Maximal values from this test were utilized in …
Comparison Of A Rapid Fluorescent Antibody Procedure With Bacitracin Disc Method For Identification Of Group A Streptococci, Hector C. Sanchez
Comparison Of A Rapid Fluorescent Antibody Procedure With Bacitracin Disc Method For Identification Of Group A Streptococci, Hector C. Sanchez
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Accurate and rapid identification of group A beta-hemolytic streptococci in upper respiratory infections is a vital step toward the appropriate treatment and eventual prevention of sequelae of streptococcal diseases. Presently, identification of group A streptococci may be accomplished in one of two ways: 1) serologically, by the Lancefield precipitin test, or by the fluorescent antibody test, and 2) by the bacitracin sensitivity disc test, or biochemically. Both the precipitin test and the bacitracin disc plate method take approximately 24-48 hours for identification of streptococci. The fluorescent antibody test requires less than 24 hours. Comparative studies have demonstrated that the conventional …

Immunocytochemistry At The Electron-Microscopic Level, David S. Papermaster
UCHC Articles - Research
Since the early slxtles, a number of reports have been published concerning immunocytochemical techniques for the detection of intracellular constituents at the electron microscope level. The· initial studies were made possible by the introduction by Singer of ferritin-tagged antibodies which could be visualized in the electron microscope. From all the procedures described later, immunocytochemical methods at the electron microscope can be classified into two main categories: 1) preembedding staining and 2) postembedding staining techniques.

Introduction
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The purpose of this group of papers is to present an up-to-date review of common urologic problems that confront the primary care physician. Two papers are presented on urinary tract infections, the most common complaint faced by physicians in their offices. Another paper covers congenital anomalies of the urinary tract which represent an important part of pediatric diseases. Dr. William McRoberts, one of the McGuire Lecturers, reviews aspects of male infertility, a significant concern in today’s society. Other topics discussed in this issue are parenchymal kidney disease, the management of the patient with end-stage renal disease, and urinary tract cancer. …

Evaluation Of An Abnormal Urinalysis In The Asymptomatic Patient, Douglas M. Landwehr
Evaluation Of An Abnormal Urinalysis In The Asymptomatic Patient, Douglas M. Landwehr
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Physicians are occasionally presented with the problem of evaluating a patient who has an abnormal urinalysis but who has no other sign or symptom of genitourinary (GU) tract disease. For example, patients may present with hematuria, pyuria or slight proteinuria, but they may have no other clinical or laboratory abnormality to suggest glomerulonephritis, renal failure, urinary tract infection, obstruction, hypertension, or stones. There are a wide variety of lesions which may produce such isolated abnormalities, and a rational approach is indispensable in preparing an efficient and definitive diagnostic plan.

The Dental Health Status Of Pre-Columbian Peruvians: A Study Of Dental Caries, Missing Teeth, Attrition, Osteitis, Calculus, And Bone Loss, Danny R. Sawyer, Marvin J. Allison, Richard P. Elzay, Alejandro Pezzia
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Prior to the recent reports of Sawyer et al and Elzay et al on the characteristics and dental health status of ancient Peruvian cultures, only Stewart, Leigh, and Goaz and Miller had reported on the dental morphology and pathology of the pre-Columbian Peruvian Indians. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the dental health of these ancient peoples to further our understanding of the development of dental diseases. This paper follows up and expands the report of Elzay et al to include another culture and completely new specimens, with a look at primary dentitions not previously available for study.

Abstract
Industrial workers exposed to the organochlorine pesticide, chlordecone (Kepone), had signs of toxicity in several organs. The extent of toxicity was proportional to the levels of this chemical in the tissues. In 22 patients, chlordecone was eliminated slowly from blood (half time of 165±27 days — mean ± S.E.M.) and fat (half time of 125 days, with a range of 97 to 177), chiefly in the stool. Output of chlordecone in bile was 10 to 20 times greater than in stool, suggesting that chlordecone is reabsorbed in the intestine. Cholestyramine, an anion-exchange resin that binds chlordecone, increased its fecal …

Abstract
We studied lymphocyte capping in 61 patients with Duchenne, Becker, limb-girdle, facioscapulohumeral and congenital muscular dystrophies. All showed a markedly diminished percentage of capped cells when compared with 86 normal controls, providing support for previous evidence that an alteration in membrane fluidity may be a common pathogenic feature in several genetically distinct forms of proximal muscular dystrophy.
Heterozygous carriers of Duchenne muscular dystrophy showed diminished capping that was indistinguishable from that of afflicted males and was often present even when serum enzyme levels were normal. Studies in 25 families with 16 suspected sporadic cases indicated that no more than …
Appropriate Antibiotic Therapy For Urinary Tract Infections, Sheldon M. Markowitz
Appropriate Antibiotic Therapy For Urinary Tract Infections, Sheldon M. Markowitz
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
It was stated years ago that physicians pour medicines about which they know little, for diseases about which they know less, into human beings about whom they know nothing. Although as a prophet this wag may have overstated the case as it concerns the therapy of urinary tract infections (UTI), the character of contemporary infectious diseases is, in part, due to the use and abuse of anti-infective agents. One has only to look at the rising incidence of gram-negative bacteremia and the emergence of multiple antibiotic-resistant organisms over the past several decades to appreciate the impact physicians have made with …
Flexible Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy, Orhan Muren
Flexible Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy, Orhan Muren
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope was introduced in Japan by Dr. Shigeto Ikeda in the mid-1960s and became available for clinical use in the United States around 1970. The application of this technique represents one fo the most significant advances for the diagnosis and management of chest diseases as it enables the physician to directly visualize the tracheobronchial tree and obtain diagnostic specimens from regions of the lung previously inaccessible to the rigid bronchoscope. Except for suppleural lesions, fiberoptic bronchoscopy is the surgical procedure of choice in the evaluation of many pulmonary lesions. In addition, fiberoptic bronchoscopy plays a major therapeutic …
