Hematology As Related To Diving Characteristics Of Elaphe Obsoleta, Nerodia Erythrogaster, Nerodia Fasciata And Nerodia Rhombifera, Dennis A. Baeyens, M. W. Patterson, Chris T. Mcallister

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The diving capabilities of Nerodia erythrogaster flavigaster and Nerodia fasciata confluens were investigated and the results were compared with similar studies on Nerodia rhombifera rhombifera and Elaphe obsoleta obsoleta (Baeyens et al., 1978). In addition, morphological and hematological parameters contributing to underwater survival were examined. The duration of underwater survival for N. erythrogaster and N. fasciata was approximately one hour with no difference between the species. The lung volumes of the two species were also similar but were significantly less than lung volumes reported for E. obsoleta. There were no significant differences in hemoglobin concentration, red blood cell count or …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Visual Short Term Memory And Speechreading In Hearing Impaired Geriatrics, Catherine Hollevoet

Dissertations and Theses

The relationship between visual short term memory (as measured by the Memory for Designs Test) and speechreading ability (as measured by the Barley Speechreading Test) was investigated in a sample of twenty-seven hearing impaired geriatrics. Correlation analysis verified a statistically significant relationship between Memory for Designs Test scores and Barley Speechreading Test scores. Partial correlation revealed the relationship between speechreading scores and short term memory scores was rot influenced significantly by variance in chronological age or speech discrimination ability. Memory for Designs Test scores were shown to be accurate predictors of scores achieved on the Barley Speechreading Test.

Variability In Test-Retest Of Maximum Duration Of Sustained /A/ In Children, Elena Diane Norwood Jan 1979

Variability In Test-Retest Of Maximum Duration Of Sustained /A/ In Children, Elena Diane Norwood

Dissertations and Theses

Maximum phonation time has been widely utilized as a simple clinical evaluation of the vocal function. Its importance has been emphasized by Van Riper (1954), Westlake and Rutherford (1961), Boone (1971), and other authors. A review of the literature revealed three trials of sustained phonation have been utilized by most researchers to determine maximum duration of phonation. Additionally, the review revealed a lack of test-retest reliability in maximum phonation time in children.

The present study was designed to determine the variability in test-retest of maximum duration of· sustained /a/ among prepubescent male and female children. Eighty subjects, twenty at each …

A Study To Compare The Strength Changes After Training The Abductor Digiti Minimi In Young Adults And In Geriatric Adults, Timothy Lee Kauffman Jan 1979

A Study To Compare The Strength Changes After Training The Abductor Digiti Minimi In Young Adults And In Geriatric Adults, Timothy Lee Kauffman

Theses and Dissertations

A paucity of research exists in the strength training and aging literature. Hettinger (1958) reported that strength declined with age and that older persons gained less with strength training than younger persons. This study altered Hettinger's design by using a different muscle and a different strengthening routine. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of isometric strength training of the non-dominant left abductor digiti minimi muscles of young subjects and old subjects. The ten young female subjects, mean age 22.6 years, were all nursing students. The ten older female subjects, mean age 69.2 years, did not constitute …

Trh And Prolactin: Studies On Prolactin Secretory Dynamics, Theodore H. Elsasser Jr. Jan 1979

Trh And Prolactin: Studies On Prolactin Secretory Dynamics, Theodore H. Elsasser Jr.

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Prolactin secretion following the injection of thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) was characterized in unanesthetized freely moving female rats at various times during the estrus cycle. Pituitary responses to TRH were also studied using prepubertal and ovariectomized animal models. Subsequent experiments examined the involvement of ovarian steroids and dopamine in the pituitary response to TRH. Initial studies determined the range of TRH doses that elicited minimal through maximal elevations in prolactin secretion in prepubertal, ovariectomized, and mature intact animals in estrus and diestrus. Dose response studies demonstrated that increases in prolactin secretion occurred with increasing amounts of TRH in all animals. …

Identification, Discrimination, And Selective Adaptation Of Simultaneous Musical Intervals, Robert J. Zatorre, Andrea R. Halpern Jan 1979

Identification, Discrimination, And Selective Adaptation Of Simultaneous Musical Intervals, Robert J. Zatorre, Andrea R. Halpern

Faculty Journal Articles

Four experiments investigated perception of major and minor thirds whose component tones were sounded simultaneously. Effects akin to categorical perception of speech sounds were found. In the first experiment, musicians demonstrated relatively sharp category boundaries in identification and peaks near the boundary in discrimination tasks of an interval continuum where the bottom note was always an F and the top note varied from A to A flat in seven equal logarithmic steps. Nonmusicians showed these effects only to a small extent. The musicians showed higher than predicted discrimination performance overall, and reaction time increases at category boundaries. In the second …
