Atypical Clinical Manifestation Of Dementia: A Progressive Visuospatial Deficit, Mehmet Güney Şenol, Hakan Tekeli̇, Erdem Toğrol, Mehmet Saraçoğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Clinically and neuropathologically dementia is a very heterogeneous disease. Alzheimer's disease (Alzheimer disease, AD), the most common cause of dementia, is an acquired cognitive and behavioral impairment of sufficient severity that markedly interferes with social and occupational functioning. This disease may be manifested as progressive memory problems, visuospatial deterioration, aphasia and/or deficits of executive functions. The patient we report here is a 73-year-old female patient with loss of ability of finding directions and understanding the shapes of materials. Her complaints increased progressively during the last two years. Even if she had retired from tailoring, she had deterioration in the visuospatial …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) triggers synthesis of nitric oxide (NO) and superoxide (O_2^{.-}). O_2^{.-} can react with NO to produce the powerful oxidant peroxynitrite (ONOO-). The presence of 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT) in tissues is often used as a marker of ONOO- production. Vitamin A, vitamin C, and melatonin are potent antioxidant molecules. We sought to clarify this issue by examining the effects of vitamin A (15,000 IU/kg/day), vitamin C (600 mg/kg/day), and melatonin (25 mg/kg) on 3-NT formation in heart tissue in a guinea pig model of LPS-induced endotoxemia. Materials and methods: A total of 75 animals were randomly divided into 5 …

The aim of this study was to determine the susceptibility of Candida isolates obtained from clinical specimens to the antifungal agents amphotericin B and fluconazole, which are frequently used in our clinical practice. Materials and methods: Susceptibility to antifungal agents was investigated using the Etest (AB Biodisk, Solna, Sweden) and the reference broth macrodilution susceptibility test (CLSI M27-A2). The MICs obtained with each of the methods were read after 24 h and 48 h of incubation. Results: Overall agreement rates within ±1 …

Effect Of L-Carnitine On Diabetic Neuropathy And Ventricular Dispersion In Patients With Diabetes Mellitus, Hizir Ulvi̇, Recep Aygül, Recep Demi̇r

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Diabetes is a common cause of polyneuropathy. Cardiac arrhythmias and markedly increased mortality rate have been demonstrated in patients with diabetic neuropathy and also demonstrated that abnormally prolonged QT dispersion interval (QTd) is associated with a higher risk of ventricular arrhythmias and sudden death. We investigated the efficacy and tolerability of L-carnitine (LC) in the treatment of diabetic neuropathy and ventricular dispersion, mainly by evaluating the effects of treatment on electrophysiological parameters. Materials and methods: We recruited 30 patients with type I or type II diabetes (mean age: 60 ± 9 years, range: 36-75; 18 males, 12 females) meeting clinical …

To determine the immunohistochemical expression of CK-19, cErbB2, galectin-3, and p53 in papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTC). Materials and methods: In this study immunohistochemistry was performed on 23 papillary carcinomas (PCs) and 20 papillary microcarcinomas (PMCs). The extents of staining and intensity were scored semiquantitatively. Results: Of the PC cases 56.5% and of the PMC cases 15.0% were stained strongly by cErbB2. The extent of 2+ staining by galectin-3 was 47.8% in PC, whereas it was only 10.0% in PMC (P = 0.003). All PMC cases were stained by CK-19 and 21 cases of PC expressed positivity in varying extent of …

Hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) cause endothelial dysfunction and may result in cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to assess endothelial dysfunction in essential hypertensives, and normotensive and hypertensive type 2 diabetics and to evaluate the effect of telmisartan on endothelium in hypertensives. Materials and methods: Eighteen essential hypertensives (group 1), 16 type 2 diabetic hypertensives (group 2), 10 type 2 diabetic normotensives (group 3), and 10 control subjects (group 4) were included in this study. Groups 1 and 2 received 40 mg/day telmisartan for 12 weeks and were evaluated at the beginning and end. Groups …
