Leptin is an important controller of the size of fat stores by inhibiting appetite. In wrestling, fat metabolism is important not only for aerobic energy system, but also for weight control and weight loss before competition. The aim of this study was to measure and compare the serum leptin levels, glucose homeostasis, and serum lipoproteins between Turkish national wrestlers and sedentary males. Materials and methods: Forty-five Turkish national wrestlers at the end of Olympic training camp before Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and 43 sedentary students were selected as subjects. Post-exercise levels of serum leptin, HOMA (Homeostasis model assessment) values, triglycerides, …

To investigate the association of TAFI with components of metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance in patients with metabolic syndrome. Materials and methods: Patients between 20 and 70 years of age, who met at least 3 of the metabolic syndrome criteria, and had no known coronary artery disease were included in the study. The control group consisted of 20 healthy subjects with demographic characteristics similar to the patients. Fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, lipid profile, insulin, microalbumin, and TAFI Ag levels were investigated in the patients and controls. Insulin resistance was calculated according to the HOMA-IR [(fasting plasma insulin (\muIU/ml) x fasting …

To determine the role of hepatic artery resistive index (HARI) measurement in the prediction of insulin resistance (IR) in obese children with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Materials and methods: A total of 64 obese subjects with NAFLD (13.5 ± 1.36 years of age, 34 male) and 32 age- and gender-matched control subjects (13.8 ± 1.24 years of age, 16 male) were enrolled in the study. All subjects underwent a physical examination, laboratory tests, and ultrasonographic and Doppler examinations of the liver. The homeostasis model assessment of IR (HOMA-IR) was used for the IR diagnosis. Results: Obese subjects with NAFLD …
