The Effect Of Pedal Frequency And Resistance On Oxygen Consumption During Bicycle Ergometer Work In College Females, Sue Joseph Joslyn Jan 1987

The Effect Of Pedal Frequency And Resistance On Oxygen Consumption During Bicycle Ergometer Work In College Females, Sue Joseph Joslyn

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Total workload on a bicycle ergometer is determined by the amount of resistance and the pedal frequency. Predicting oxygen consumption on a bicycle ergometer is currently based on total workload being performed, regardless of resistance and pedal frequency. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of pedal frequency and resistance on oxygen consumption at constant workloads during bicycle ergometer work in college-age females. It was hypothesized that changes in pedal frequency and resistance would cause significant differences in oxygen consumption at a constant workload.

Fourteen healthv, untrained females, age 19 to 22, performed maximal oxygen consumption tests …

Peak Isokinetic Torque Of Knee Flexors And Extensor Muscles Of College Football Players, David L. Boerem Jan 1987

Peak Isokinetic Torque Of Knee Flexors And Extensor Muscles Of College Football Players, David L. Boerem

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The problem of the study addressed knee injuries in college football. Imbalance of the musculature surrounding the knee would predispose the athlete to knee injury. Recognition of those who have muscular deficiencies would be a primary way of preventing knee injuries. The focus of the study was to determine if there was a significant difference in peak isokinetic torque of knee flexor and extensor muscles across speeds (60 degrees/second, 180 degrees/ second and 300 degrees/second) of a college football team subsequent to participation in a spring football season.

Skin Temperature Changes In The Ankle During And After Ice Pack Application Of 10, 20, 30, 45, And 60 Minutes, Joan H. Mlynarczyk Dec 1984

Skin Temperature Changes In The Ankle During And After Ice Pack Application Of 10, 20, 30, 45, And 60 Minutes, Joan H. Mlynarczyk

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated changes in ankle skin temperature during and following various durations of therapeutic cold application. Surface temperature was measured with a telethermister on the ankles of 10 male subjects during five treatment conditions. Experimental conditions involved the application of an ice pack to the ankle for 10, 20, 30, 45, and 60 minutes. Each subject was tested under all five treatment conditions utilizing a balanced Latin Square design. Subjects were required to lie at rest in a supine manner with both ankles elevated six inches above the treatment table. Following a 30 minute pre-treatment period, ice packs were …

A Comparison Of Oxygen Consumption In Light And Heavy Resistance Weight Training Methods In Males, Kean Gerard Richard Jan 1984

A Comparison Of Oxygen Consumption In Light And Heavy Resistance Weight Training Methods In Males, Kean Gerard Richard

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Heavy resistance and low resistance weight training methods are commonly used in off season conditioning programs for various sports. Research has indicated that heavy resistance training elicits muscular strength development whereas low resistance training elicits the development of muscular endurance. However, there is very little or no research which has investigated a comparison of oxygen consumption between heavy resistance and low resistance training while keeping work constant.

The purpose of this investigation was to compare the oxygen cost of performing heavy and low resistance weight training methods. Also, a second purpose of the study was to determine the contribution of …

The Effects Of Varying Doses Of Orally Ingested Bee Pollen Extract Upon Total Exercise Time To Exhaustion Performance Recovery And Ratings Of Perceived Exertion, Michael Lee Woodhouse Apr 1983

The Effects Of Varying Doses Of Orally Ingested Bee Pollen Extract Upon Total Exercise Time To Exhaustion Performance Recovery And Ratings Of Perceived Exertion, Michael Lee Woodhouse

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of the present investigation was to study the effects of varying doses of orally ingested bee pollen extract upon (1) treadmill run time to exhaustion and (2) initial ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) . Subjects consisted of five male aerobically trained athletes with an age range of 21 - 35 years. The subjects individually volunteered for the study and were active members of a local running club, The Tidewater Striders.

The bee pollen was given in three dosages (0, 1350 mg, 2700 mg). The three test periods on the treadmill consisted of six runs to exhaustion with a …

A Comparison Of Academic Performance Between Athletes And Nonathletes At The University Of Northern Iowa, Cynthia Ann Bucknam Jan 1983

A Comparison Of Academic Performance Between Athletes And Nonathletes At The University Of Northern Iowa, Cynthia Ann Bucknam

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to compare the academic performance of collegiate athletes to nonathletes and to examine the relationship between participation in collegiate athletics and selected variables used to measure academic success. Specific factors that were examined included: sex, state of residence, ACT score, numbers of credit hours carried per semester, grade point average per semester, cumulative grade point average, cumulative credit hours carried, and sport. A total of 126 students from the University of Northern Iowa served as subjects in this study, 62 athletes and 64 nonathletes. Data used to make comparisons between various groups of athletes …

Menstrual Cycle Effects On Blood Pressure, Body Weight And Heart Rates During Rest, Exercise And Recovery On College Athletes, Dawn J. Shutter Jan 1982

Menstrual Cycle Effects On Blood Pressure, Body Weight And Heart Rates During Rest, Exercise And Recovery On College Athletes, Dawn J. Shutter

Masters Theses

Ten members of the Eastern Illinois University women's track team were used as subjects to determine the relationship of body weight, blood pressure and heart rate during rest, exercise and recovery to menstruation.

The subjects were tested on two different occasions. The first test was administered within twenty-four hours of the onset of menstruation. The second test was conducted seven days later. During both testing periods blood pressure, body weight and resting heart rate measurements were taken before beginning the treadmill protocol (progressive grade and speed increases up to 4% and 8 mph, respectively). The subjects ran on a motor …

Effects Of A Supplementary Depth Jumping Program On Leg Strength, Leg Power, And Sprinting Speed In Sprinters And Jumpers, Christopher E. Bucknam Jan 1982

Effects Of A Supplementary Depth Jumping Program On Leg Strength, Leg Power, And Sprinting Speed In Sprinters And Jumpers, Christopher E. Bucknam

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Many sport activities require strength and power training programs to help athletes achieve optimal performances. These types of programs are aimed at developing strength and power only through the voluntary shortening of the muscle during contraction. Research has indicated, however, that the faster a muscle is forced to lengthen, or stretch before shortening the greater tension it will exert. Plyometric training, specifically depth jumping, is one technique that does emphasize a forced maximum stretch over a short period of time. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of a plyometric conditioning program, when used in addition to …
