An Investigation Of The Tri-Bar Gripping System On Isometric Muscular Endurance, Daniel G. Drury, Heath Faggiono, Kristin J. Stuempfle

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Recently, a new product called the Tri-Bar has been introduced as an alternative to the standard weightlifting bar. The Tri-Bar has the same weight, length, and circumference as a standard weightlifting bar and differs only in that the shape of the bar is formed like a triangle with rounded edges. Theoretically, the shape of the bar will enhance gripping comfort and increase muscular endurance. We studied 32 moderately trained males who were free from upper-body injury or limitation. Each participant completed 4 visits to the lab as part of 2 separate investigations. The first investigation was a comparison of straight-arm …

Examination Of Multiple Fatigue Models During Prolonged Cycling In Hot Versus Cold Climates, Chris Abbiss Jan 2004

Examination Of Multiple Fatigue Models During Prolonged Cycling In Hot Versus Cold Climates, Chris Abbiss

Theses : Honours

Much of the previous research into understanding fatigue during prolonged cycling has found that endurance performance may be limited by numerous physiological, biomechanical, environmental, mechanical, and psychological factors. From the literature presently available, fatigue would appear to be task- and condition- specific. Studies demonstrating this, however, are limited. The purpose of this thesis, therefore, was to examine variables from multiple fatigue models concurrently to determine which variables were best related to fatigue during prolonged endurance exercise in hot versus cold conditions. Following a 100-km familiarization time trial (22°C) , nine endurance trained male cyclists ( VO2max = 62.1 ± …

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications

Purpose: The American College of Sports Medicine's (ACSM) preferred method for estimating maximal oxygen consumption (V̇O2max) has been shown to overestimate V̇O2max, possibly due to the short length of the cycle ergometry stages. This study validates a new method that uses a final 6-min stage and that estimates V̇O2max from the relationship between heart rate reserve (HRR) and V̇O2 reserve. Methods: A cycle ergometry protocol was designed to elicit 65–75% HRR in the fifth and sixth minutes of the final stage. Maximal workload was estimated by dividing the workload of the final stage by …

Dietary Supplements And Sports Performance: Introduction And Vitamins, Melvin H. Williams Jan 2004

Dietary Supplements And Sports Performance: Introduction And Vitamins, Melvin H. Williams

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications

Sports success is dependent primarily on genetic endowment in athletes with morphologic, psychologic, physiologic and metabolic traits specific to performance characteristics vital to their sport. Such genetically-endowed athletes must also receive optimal training to increase physical power, enhance mental strength, and provide a mechanical advantage. However, athletes often attempt to go beyond training and use substances and techniques, often referred to as ergogenics, in attempts to gain a competitive advantage. Pharmacological agents, such as anabolic steroids and amphetamines, have been used in the past, but such practices by athletes have led to the establishment of anti-doping legislation and effective testing …

An Electromyographic Comparison Of Neck Conditioning Exercises, Jemma L. Coleman Jan 2004

An Electromyographic Comparison Of Neck Conditioning Exercises, Jemma L. Coleman

Theses : Honours

It is known that sustained muscular contractions can cause muscular pain, which explains the prevalence of neck pain of employees in static and semi-static work such as dentistry, sewing machine and computer operation. Additionally, exposure to high and sustained gravitational forces in high performance combat pilots is another source of neck pain in the workplace. Individuals with neck pain have been found to show decreased neck strength, in particular neck flexor strength has been found to be less than that of the general population. It has been suggested that neck-conditioning exercises may be useful in the prevention and rehabilitation of …

The Effects Of Movement Based Interventions On Doms And Muscle Damage Following Eccentric Exercise, Zainal A. Zainuddin

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a common symptom experienced by most adults following unaccustomed exercise. It is known that DOMS is peculiar to eccentric exercise that results in muscle damage which is characterized by prolonged loss of muscle function. DOMS and subsequent impaired muscle function, reduces the ability to maximize performance of daily living tasks, and has negative effects on sports adherence and activity based healthy lifestyle. Thus, treatments to ameliorate DOMS and enhance recovery of muscle function are important.
