Faculty Publications

Concussion is a public health issue, fundamental to health promotion and injury prevention. Concussions are prevalent in adolescent athletic competition, in high-collision and non-collision sports. A history of previous concussion increases risk by a factor of three, female gender increases it 1.5 to 2.5 times, and female middle-school soccer players have 22.9 times increased risk during games. Non-collision concussions (indirect) may be primed by altered movement patterns from previous injuries, disruption of cervical proprioception, or musculoskeletal pain. Assessment of dynamic balance and functional movement allows identification of poor movement patterns or control.

PURPOSE: To assess a preventative movement-based warm-up routine …

Percutaneous Ultrasonic Debridement Of Tendinopathy—A Pilot Achilles Rabbit Model, Srinath Kamineni, Timothy Butterfield, Anthony Sinai

Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Tendinopathy is a common clinical pathology, with mixed treatment results, especially when chronic. In this study, we examine the effects of an ultrasonic debridement modality in a rabbit tendinopathy model. We asked four questions: (1) Was it possible to create and visualize with ultrasound a tendinopathy lesion in a rabbit Achilles tendon? (2) Was it possible to guide a 19-gauge ultrasonic probe into the tendinopathy lesion? (3) Following ultrasonic treatment, was tendinopathy debris histologically present? and (4) Was the collagen profile qualitatively and quantitatively normalized following treatment?

METHODS: Skeletally mature female New Zealand white rabbits (n = 12) …

The Two-Hour Marathon: What's The Equivalent For Women?, Sandra K. Hunter, Michael J. Joyner, Andrew M. Jones

Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications

The principal characteristic of the runner who may break the two-hour barrier in the marathon will be their sex: the person will be male. The fastest men outperform the fastest women because of sex differences in physiology including a higher VȮ2 max. This viewpoint addresses the questions of what is the two-hour equivalent for women, and who will break this barrier? The current sex difference in the world record for the marathon is ~10% which is slightly less than the mean sex difference in performance usually documented between elite men and women distance runners. Based on comparisons of the top …

Effects Of A Low-Carbohydrate Ketogenic Diet On Power Lifting Performance And Body Composition, Jessica L. Agee May 2015

Effects Of A Low-Carbohydrate Ketogenic Diet On Power Lifting Performance And Body Composition, Jessica L. Agee

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The aim of the present study is to investigate whether a low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet (LCKD) is an effective strategy to decrease overall weight and fat mass, and preserve lean body mass (LBM) without compromising performance in trained, power-lifters. This was a six-week randomized controlled trial, with a LCKD intervention group and a normal diet control group (CON). The LCKD group was instructed to consume a diet with less than 7% carbohydrates, 50% fat, and 45% protein. Those in the CON group maintained an ad libitum diet. Both groups completed the same validated training protocol during the intervention. The CON had …

The Psychological Response To A Low Carbohydrate Ketogenic Diet In Combination With A Six-Week Strength Training Protocol, Matthew T. Thorp May 2015

The Psychological Response To A Low Carbohydrate Ketogenic Diet In Combination With A Six-Week Strength Training Protocol, Matthew T. Thorp

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The aim of the present study was to determine whether or not long-term adherence to a Low-Carbohydrate Ketogenic Diet (LCKD) combined with a powerlifting strength training protocol could produce a positive psychological response. This six-week randomized control trial consisted of a treatment (LCKD) group (7% carbohydrates, 50% fat and 45% protein) and a control (CON) group (ad libitum). Both groups completed a validated powerlifting training protocol, as well as the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the Profile of Mood States. Multivariate testing and general linear modeling statistical analyses were used to compare psychological response between groups (p < 0.05) and found that there was a significant decrease in anxiety over the duration of six-weeks among both groups. No other psychological responses, including negative responses, were found to be significant. All participants significantly improved one-repetition max bench press, back squat, and deadlift (p < 0.05). The main findings of this study suggest that some positive psychological responses exist from long-term LCKD adherence, as well as potential increases in strength performance.

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications

Objective evaluation of language function is critical for children with intractable epilepsy under consideration for epilepsy surgery. The purpose of this preliminary study was to evaluate word recognition in children with intractable epilepsy by using magnetoencephalography (MEG). Ten children with intractable epilepsy (M/F 6/4, mean ± SD 13.4 ± 2.2 years) were matched on age and sex to healthy controls. Common nouns were presented simultaneously from visual and auditory sensory inputs in “match” and “mismatch” conditions. Neuromagnetic responses M1, M2, M3, M4, and M5 with latencies of ∼100ms, ∼150ms, ∼250ms, ∼350ms, and ∼450ms, respectively, elicited during the “match” condition were …

The Physiological Effects Of A Cross Country Bike Ride On Novice Cyclists, Wade Weatherholt May 2015

The Physiological Effects Of A Cross Country Bike Ride On Novice Cyclists, Wade Weatherholt

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Purpose: The physiological responses and adaptations experienced by novices engaging in cross-country cycling have received little attention in the scientific literature. Such endeavors typically involve a sizeable increase in physical activity for most individuals, but the acute and chronic effects of such an endurance feat are not well understood. Similarly, research shows that experienced cyclists often demonstrate osteoporosis in the spine, linked to many years of training accompanied by little or no weight bearing stress upon the axial skeleton. Greater understanding of these issues is needed, as long distance cycling has increased in popularity in recent years, and exercise professionals …
