Energy Management Mechanisms Employed At The Human-Material Interface Of Traditional And Minimalist Shod Running, Nadine M. Lippa

Dissertations

From recreational to elite athletes, greater than 50% of runners sustain overuse injuries each year, prompting substantial research efforts to identify causes of—and solutions to—the high injury rate. Different shoe types and material property degradation have been related to injury. Two popular footwear types are traditional shoes with thick graded soles and minimalist running footwear with thinner foam and/or non-graded soles. Notwithstanding 45 years of significant modifications to shoe design features, gained knowledge in kinesiology, and advanced technologies in polymer science, runner injury rates have not decreased and EVA foam has remained the primary running shoe midsole material since the …

Examining The Motivations And Benefits Of Student-Athletes Performing Community Service., Matthew Ryan Huml

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With over 460,000 active student-athletes (NCAA, n.d.), the student sub-population is large enough to investigate potential options for institutions to increase their academic achievement. Additionally, participating in academic-related activities is especially important because of concerns about student-athletes spending more than the 20 hours per week the NCAA allows for working on their sport (Wolverton, 2008). Studies frequently highlight a lack of effort by student-athletes to adjust to academic opportunities and expectations within higher education (Adler & Adler, 1991; Lally & Kerr, 2005; Levine, Etchison, & Oppenheimer, 2014; Miller & Kerr, 2003). To combat this adjustment to higher education, community service …

Identifying And Reducing Risk Of The Female Athlete Triad In Division I Athletes, Jennifer Day May 2016

Identifying And Reducing Risk Of The Female Athlete Triad In Division I Athletes, Jennifer Day

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Physically active females, or female athletes, are at risk for the condition known as the female athlete triad (Triad). The Triad is made up of three components that are distinctly separate, but intertwined: consuming inadequate energy for how much they are exercising, poor bone health, and problems with their menstrual periods. When female athletes don’t consume enough energy for how much they exercise, there can be hormonal imbalances, causing the body to conserve energy from some important functions including menstruation, and increased bone turnover resulting in a higher risk of stress fractures and early osteoporosis. Female athletes at risk for …

biomechanical patterns and insufficiencies that may influence risk of ligamentous injury, such as an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear. One kinematic pattern that has been identified as detrimental to ACL integrity is frontal plane knee collapse (valgus) during jumping and landing tasks.1 Inter-limb differences in force generation have also been connected to the occurrence of lower extremity injury.2 It is not known, however, whether these patterns contribute to the occurrence of lower extremity (LE) non-contact soft-tissue injury. The counter-movement vertical jump (CMVJ) is one way to simultaneously screen for knee collapse and asymmetrical force production patterns. This method was therefore …

UCARE: Research Products

Background: The optimal resistance training program to elicit muscle hypertrophy has been consistently debated and researched. Although 3 sets of 10 repetitions at 70-80% of the 1-repetition maximum (1RM) is widely recommended, recent studies have shown that low-load (~30% 1RM), high-repetition (3 sets of 30-40 repetitions) resistance training can elicit similar muscular hypertrophy. Therefore, this type of resistance training has gained popularity, perhaps because less weight is lifted for a longer duration. In the process of testing this hypothesis in a research study in our laboratory, a subject diagnosed with exertional rhabdomyolysis after completing a single resistance training session …

Effect Of Breathing Apparatus On The Patterns Of Response For Physiological Variables During An Incremental Test To Exhaustion, Rachel Lechtenberger, Kristen C. Cochrane, Terry J. Housh

UCARE: Research Products

During running exercise, trained runners will utilize both nasal and oral breathing mechanisms. However, during most clinical running tests, the breathing apparatus blocks the nasal pathway, therefore only allowing oral breathing. It has been suggested that a breathing apparatus that allows both nasal and oral breathing may provide an environment that is more similar to running outside of a lab setting. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the patterns of responses for physiological variables during an incremental treadmill running exercise test to exhaustion utilizing both a traditional mouth piece (MP) and breathing mask (MSK) apparatus. METHODS: …

Effects Of Isolated Core Stability Training On Standing Static Postural Control, Recovery Of Standing Postural Control And Kicking Velocity In Soccer Athletes, Ali El-Kerdi Mar 2016

Effects Of Isolated Core Stability Training On Standing Static Postural Control, Recovery Of Standing Postural Control And Kicking Velocity In Soccer Athletes, Ali El-Kerdi

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

BACKGROUND: About 1/3 of injuries are non-contact in nature and half of these involve the LE’s. There are numerous anatomical and physiological mechanisms and systems involved in stabilizing the trunk for movement of the lower extremities. The ability of the trunk to maintain the position and motion of the trunk over the pelvis and LE’s is predominantly accomplished via quick postural responses to internal and external forces. These pre-programed postural responses are integrated within the neuromuscular system. It is theorized that poor core stability is a result of a failure in the neuromuscular system to support the trunk and pelvis …

Stretching The Spines Of Gymnasts: A Review, William A. Sands, Jeni R. Mcneal, Gabriella Penitente, Steven Ross Murray, Lawrence Nassar, Monèm Jemni, Satoshi Mizuguchi, Michael H. Stone Mar 2016

Stretching The Spines Of Gymnasts: A Review, William A. Sands, Jeni R. Mcneal, Gabriella Penitente, Steven Ross Murray, Lawrence Nassar, Monèm Jemni, Satoshi Mizuguchi, Michael H. Stone

ETSU Faculty Works

Gymnastics is noted for involving highly specialized strength, power, agility and flexibility. Flexibility is perhaps the single greatest discriminator of gymnastics from other sports. The extreme ranges of motion achieved by gymnasts require long periods of training, often occupying more than a decade. Gymnasts also start training at an early age (particularly female gymnasts), and the effect of gymnastics training on these young athletes is poorly understood. One of the concerns of many gymnastics professionals is the training of the spine in hyperextension—the ubiquitous ‘arch’ seen in many gymnastics positions and movements. Training in spine hyperextension usually begins in early …
