METHODS: 19 healthy, recreationally trained men were randomly assigned to two groups, younger adults (YA: 21.8 ± 2.0 y; 90.7 ± 11.6 kg; 21.5 ± 4.1 % body fat), or middle-aged adults (MA: 47.0 ± 4.4 y; 96.0 ± 21.5; 24.8 ± 6.3 % body fat). Both groups reported to the human performance laboratory (HPL) on four separate occasions. On …
The Effects Of Golf Stance On The Peak Knee Adduction Moment During The Golf Swing, Quenten L. Hooker
The Effects Of Golf Stance On The Peak Knee Adduction Moment During The Golf Swing, Quenten L. Hooker
Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion
INTRODUCTION: The knee joint is one of the most frequently injured structures in the game of golf. The loads experienced by the knee during the golf swing are typically greater than those experienced during walking. In particular, a heightened lead limb peak external knee adduction moment has been linked to the progression of medial compartment knee osteoarthritis (OA). Altering movement patterns is a common strategy that can be used to reduce loading on the knee joint but has received little attention during the golf swing. Also, while such manipulations may be beneficial from an injury prevention perspective, they may have …
The Effect Of Personal Protective Equipment On Firefighter Occupational Performance, Ashley Y. Lesniak
The Effect Of Personal Protective Equipment On Firefighter Occupational Performance, Ashley Y. Lesniak
Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion
Firefighting is a strenuous occupation that requires high-intensity work, resulting in prolonged periods of stress and physical exertion. The physical demand of performing firefighting tasks is augmented by the weight of personal protective equipment (PPE) worn (i.e., load carriage: LC) and the use of a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). These factors have been shown to increase metabolic demand at submaximal workloads and decrease maximal aerobic capacity in laboratory settings. However, there is limited research evaluating the effects of these factors on occupational performance. Therefore, the primary purpose of this study was to quantify the detrimental effect of LC only and …

Thirty NCAA Division I Football players (187.9 ± 5.5 cm; 107.4 ± 24.6 kg) were monitored using GPS receivers with integrated accelerometers during …
Role Of Skeletal Paracrine Signals In The Proliferation And Chondrogenic Differentiation Of Interzone Cells, Parvathy Thampi
Role Of Skeletal Paracrine Signals In The Proliferation And Chondrogenic Differentiation Of Interzone Cells, Parvathy Thampi
Theses and Dissertations--Veterinary Science
Articular cartilage in mammals has a limited intrinsic capacity to repair structural injuries and defects, a fact that contributes to the chronic and progressive nature of osteoarthritis. Current treatment modalities do not enable articular cartilage to achieve a complete and permanent restoration of normal structure and function with large or partial thickness lesions. In contrast to mammals, Mexican axolotl salamanders (Ambystoma mexicanum) have demonstrated the remarkable ability to spontaneously and completely repair even large joint cartilage lesions, an intrinsic healing process that involves interzone cells in the intraarticular space. Further, when interzone tissue is transplanted into critical sized …

Retrospective Analysis Of Contact Sport Participation On Cognitive Function In Healthy Athletes, Lisa C. Martinez
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This study explored the effects of contact and limited contact sport participation on neurocognitive function in non-concussed collegiate and adolescent athletes over time. Athletes participating in contact and limited contact sports have an increased risk of sustaining neurocognitive injuries, known as subconcussive blows, compared to non-contact sport athletes. We hypothesized that athletes participating in contact and limited contact sports, would exhibit a deficit in neurocognitive function following multiple seasons of play when compared to athletes participating in non-contact sports. Using a mixed repeated measures MANOVA statistical design, we analyzed computerized neurocognitive baseline ImPACT composite scores (verbal memory, visual memory, visual …

The Effects Of Oral Curcumin And Bioperine Supplementation On C - Reactive Protein In Crossfit Athletes, Bailey Franzen, Cassandra Greenawalt, Sloan Vlahos
Loma Linda University Research Reports
PURPOSE. C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute-phase inflammatory marker which circulates in blood plasma and rises in the presence of systemic inflammation. Strenuous exercise, such as that performed by CrossFit athletes, has been found to acutely raise CRP levels. Curcumin has demonstrated the ability to reduce CRP levels by blunting the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines secondary to the suppression of the NF- κB pathway. Concomitant graduate research administration of bioperine with curcumin improves bioavailability by 2,000%. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of oral curcumin and bioperine supplementation on CRP levels in CrossFit athletes. METHODS. Sixteen …

Clinical Question: Is there evidence to suggest that the Landing Error Scoring System (LESS) is able to detect functional changes in landing mechanics in healthy individuals after participation in an injury prevention program (IPP)? Clinical Bottom Line: In a healthy, physically active population, there is strong evidence to support the use of the LESS as an outcome measure for changes in landing mechanics after the implementation of IPPs. Clinicians should consider the LESS as an evaluative tool for measuring the efficacy of IPPs in clinical practice.

Examining The Relationship Between Different Pitching Mechanics And Throwing Injuries, Zachary M. Mccarthy
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Throwing injuries in baseball are increasing amongst major league baseball pitchers. Injuries to the shoulder complex and elbow ligamentous structures are increasing. Variables including pitch count, pitch type, throwing style, and duration of the game have all been “linked” to potential injury. Noticing the realtionship between these variables and injuries can lead to an upward trend in the decrease of throwing injuries.

Clinical Scenario: Achilles tendinopathy is a painful condition commonly affecting the general and athletic population. It presents with localized pain, stiffness, and swelling in the midportion of the Achilles tendon. The physical stress placed on the tendon results in microtrauma, which leads to subsequent inflammation and degeneration. While it is not surprising that this condition affects the physically active, nearly one-third of Achilles tendinopathy cases occur in sedentary individuals. Etiology for this condition stems from a change in loading patterns and/or overuse of the tendon, resulting in microscopic tearing and degenerative changes. There are numerous causes contributing to the …

Background: Reports estimate that 1.6 to 3.8 million cases of concussion occur in sports and recreation each year in the United States. Despite continued efforts to reduce the occurrence of concussion, the rate of diagnosis continues to increase. The mechanisms of concussion are thought to involve linear and rotational head accelerations and velocities. One method of quantifying the kinematics experienced during sport participation is to place measurement devices into the athlete’s helmet or directly on the athlete’s head.
Purpose: The purpose of this research to determine the accuracy of a head mounted device for measuring the head accelerations experienced by …

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Lower extremity injures account for over half of reported sports related injuries with the ankle and knee being the most commonly injured joints. The majority of non-contact injuries related to these two joints can potentially be prevented through individualized prevention programs. Biomechanical injury screening has the potential to identify the risk factors associated with injury and allows the implementation of targeted rehabilitation strategies to combat the identified deficits. There is substantial need for screening assessments that are practical and accurate for the clinical athletic trainer. This literature reviewed examined the dorsiflexion lunge test, Functional Movement Screen (FMS), Y-Balance Test, Star …

This paper serves as a primer to healthcare professionals of the now and future of sideline screening for concussion. In the past decade, significant research into sports-related concussions has expanded understanding of what is as a very complex injury. As the definition of concussion has evolved, the impact they have is put into perspective. As more research into the short- and long-term effects of concussions brings to light the effects of continuing to participate after suffering a concussion, the importance of keeping concussed athletes off the field is now understood as a potential life or death situation. With the dangers …

The purpose of this study was to determine if at the same intensity, two separate modalities of exercise could be perceived to have different difficulties. The modalities chosen for this study were underwater treadmill versus land treadmill. It was hypothesized that at the same sub maximal protocol, the underwater treadmill would be perceived as easier than the land treadmill. Both an objective measure, heart rate, and a subjective measure, a 10-point Borg rate of perceived exertion (RPE) scale (Borg, 1982), were used. Ten healthy University of Akron students from the ages 19-23 were used for this study. The students did …
Comparison Of Physiological Adaptations In Highly Trained Aerobic Endurance Athletes And Highly Trained Resistance Athletes, Sarah Falbo
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
ABSTRACT
Purpose: To compare the physiological differences between highly trained resistance and aerobic athletes (who perform five or more hours per week of resistance or aerobic exercise).
Methods: Participants had resting heart rate, blood pressure and lactate taken before entering the BOD POD to get body fat percentage. Then a five minute warm up on a cycle ergometer before doing the VO2 max treadmill test following the Bruce Protocol. At the completion of the VO2 max treadmill test, participants had heart rate recorded from the heart rate monitor, blood pressure and lactate were taken immediately after the max test. The …

The purpose of this study was to explore factors that may predispose college seniors to pre-hypertensive or hypertensive blood pressures. This study was done by taking students' blood pressures and administering a self reported survey to all participants asking about predisposing factors. Results indicated that none of the students tested exhibited hypertensive blood pressures, but five of them had pre-hypertensive blood pressures. Factors that seemed to correlate with the pre-hypertensive students included commute time, having changed majors during their college career, alcohol consumption, hours worked per week and post graduation plans (or lack thereof).

Aerobic group exercise is important to prevent against cardiovascular, pulmonary, and metabolic diseases. Regular exercise can help to reduce the risk of these diseases and premature death. Group exercise classes have shown to be effective in reducing weight, blood pressure, and body composition Further research is necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of these aerobic group exercise classes to one another. PURPOSE: To evaluate and compare the potential health benefits that may occur for women who participate in regular group exercise classes at the Kohl Family YMCA. METHODS: A surrey and body measurements were taken of females enrolled an eight-week aerobic …
Examination Of Hamstring Flexibility And Maximal Sprint Speed, Zach J. Guiser
Examination Of Hamstring Flexibility And Maximal Sprint Speed, Zach J. Guiser
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Abstract
Purpose
Maximal sprinting ability is a highly sought after trait in athletes. Many studies have been performed in an effort to determine the factors of sprinting ability, such as the vertical jump, squatting ability, and others. However, very limited research has been performed on the relationship between flexibility and maximal sprinting speed. The vast majority of research done involving hamstring flexibility and performance involves the acute effects of stretching on performance, or the relationship between flexibility and injury prevention. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between hamstring flexibility and maximal sprinting speed.
