Rehabilitation For Surgically Repaired Acetabular Labrum, Courtney Roberts, H Dean, S Holland
Thinking Matters Symposium Archive
Acetabular labral tears were once thought to be an uncommon injury. With advancements in modern medicine such as improvements in imaging technologies and arthroscopy techniques, hip and groin pain associated with an ALT is less likely to be missed or go un-diagnosed. With the growing prevalence, it is important for athletic trainers and physical therapists to have a protocol to follow for rehabilitation. The purpose of our research was to investigate treatment strategies for surgically repaired acetabular labral tears, and to develop a exercise protocol for a young athlete from the acute phase of injury through return-to-sport. This will assist …

Tunnel malposition is one of the most common technical reasons for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction failure. Small changes in tunnel placement can result in significant differences in outcome. More anatomic placement of the tunnels can lead to greater knee stability and a more accurate reproduction of native knee kinematics. This Technical Note describes 2 tibial tunnel–independent methods to obtain anatomic femoral tunnel placement. The all-inside anteromedial portal technique requires only minimal surgical incisions but allows precise femoral tunnel placement. However, hyperflexion of the knee is required, adequate surgical assistance is necessary, and this technique may be susceptible to graft-tunnel mismatch. …

Of this 91% of adults on SM, more than 20% of their time online is spent on networking sites like Facebook and Twitter (Weiguo and Gordon, 2014). These powerful tools connect people around the world and show no signs of slowing down.
SM has become a popular online activity for individuals, especially for those involved in business. SM is seen as a tool to aid businesses in spreading their own message, at little to no …
Flexible Dieting And Metabolic Adaptation During Weight Loss: A Comprehensive Review, Bryce Lahaie
Flexible Dieting And Metabolic Adaptation During Weight Loss: A Comprehensive Review, Bryce Lahaie
Senior Honors Projects
Flexible dieting is a ubiquitous method of eating among the fitness population. It is not a diet, but rather a nutritional concept that refutes any diet that promotes cutting out entire foods or food groups as a method to lose weight. It is a structured and science-based method of eating that involves tracking calories through monitoring the three main macronutrients: carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. These macronutrients are individualized and adjusted for muscle growth, fat loss, or weight maintenance in order to optimize intake to facilitate the manipulation of body composition. Flexible dieting is a disciplined method of eating that teaches …

Acute Elevations In Serum Hormones Are Attenuated After Chronic Training With Traditional Isoinertial But Not Accentuated Eccentric Loads In Strength-Trained Men, Simon Walker, Keijo Häkkinen, Greg Haff, Anthony J. Blazevich, Robert Newton
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
It has been proposed that the maintenance of acute hormonal responses reveal an efficacy of a training stimulus to evoke ongoing increases in strength and muscle mass. We previously observed that maximum strength continued to improve throughout a 10‐week period in an accentuated eccentric loading group (AEL) but not a traditional isoinertial loading (ISO) group. Therefore, this study investigated whether the magnitude of acute hormonal responses was greater (i.e., maintained) in AEL compared to ISO at the end of the training period. Subjects in AEL (eccentric load = concentric load + 40%) and ISO performed experimental loading tests (three sets …

Superior Effects Of Eccentric To Concentric Knee Extensor Resistance Training On Physical Fitness, Insulin Sensitivity And Lipid Profiles Of Elderly Men, Trevor Chung-Ching Chen, Wei-Chin Tseng, Guan-Ling Huang, Hsin-Lian Chen, Kuo-Wei Tseng, Kazunori Nosaka
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
It has been reported that eccentric training of knee extensors is effective for improving blood insulin sensitivity and lipid profiles to a greater extent than concentric training in young women. However, it is not known whether this is also the case for elderly individuals. Thus, the present study tested the hypothesis that eccentric training of the knee extensors would improve physical function and health parameters (e.g., blood lipid profiles) of older adults better than concentric training. Healthy elderly men (60–76 years) were assigned to either eccentric training or concentric training group (n=13/group), and performed 30–60 eccentric or concentric …

Prevention Of Downhill Walking-Induced Muscle Damage By Non-Damaging Downhill Walking, Sumiaki Maeo, Masayoshi Yamamoto, Hiroaki Kanehisa, Kazunori Nosaka
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Purpose:
Mountain trekking involves level, uphill, and downhill walking (DW). Prolonged DW induces damage to leg muscles, reducing force generating ability and muscle coordination. These increase risks for more serious injuries and accidents in mountain trekking, thus a strategy to minimize muscle damage is warranted. It has been shown that low-intensity eccentric contractions confer protective effect on muscle damage induced by high-intensity eccentric contractions. This study tested the hypothesis that 5-min non-damaging DW would attenuate muscle damage induced by 40-min DW, but 5-min level walking (LW) would not.
Methods:
Untrained young men were allocated (n = 12/group) to either a …

Effects Of Height Increasing Heel Insole On Lower Extremity Joint Mechanics, Youngwook Kim
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
High-heel shoes alter foot pressure distribution and lower extremity kinetic and kinematics. Unlike general women’s high-heeled shoes, height increasing heel insoles are cushioned, which may contribute to impact absorption. The purpose of this study is to compare the kinetic and kinematics of gaits with and without height increasing heel insoles. Two male subjects performed level walking under two conditions: wearing sports shoes with and without height increasing heel insoles which added additional 5 cm of the heel height (total 6 cm). The vertical ground reaction force (GRF), angle, moment, and power of ankle, knee, and hip during the stance phase …

Due to the important interactions of proenkephalin fragments (e.g., proenkephalin [107–140] Peptide F) to enhance activation of immune cells and potentially combat pain associated with exercise-induced muscle tissue damage, we examined the differential plasma responses of Peptide F to different exercise training programs. Participants were tested pre-training (T1), and after 8 weeks (T2) of training. Fiftynine healthy women were matched and then randomly assigned to one of four groups: heavy resistance strength training (STR, n = 18), high intensity endurance training (END, n = 14), combined strength and endurance training (CMB, n = 17), or control (CON, n = 10). …

As the incidence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction continues to increase, the rate of revision surgery continues to climb. Revision surgery has inherent challenges that must be addressed to achieve successful results. The cause of the primary ACL reconstruction failure should be determined and careful preoperative planning should be performed to address the cause(s) of failure. Each patient undergoing revision surgery should undergo a thorough history and physical examination, receive full-length alignment radiographs, lateral radiographs, 45° flexion weight-bearing posteroanterior radiographs, and patellofemoral radiographs. The 3-dimensional computed tomography scan should be performed to assess tunnel position and widening. Magnetic resonance …

Pre-training muscle characteristics of subjects who are obese determine how well exercise training will improve their insulin responsiveness. J Strength Cond Res 31(3): 798–808, 2017—Only half of prediabetic subjects who are obese who underwent exercise training without weight loss increased their insulin responsiveness. We hypothesized that those who improved their insulin responsiveness might have pretraining characteristics favoring a positive response to exercise training. Thirty nondiabetic subjects who were obese volunteered for 8 weeks of either strength training or endurance training. During training, subjects increased their caloric intake to prevent weight loss. Insulin responsiveness by euglycemic clamps and muscle fiber composition, …
The Manipulation Of Pace Within Endurance Sport, Sabrina Skorski, Chris Abbiss
The Manipulation Of Pace Within Endurance Sport, Sabrina Skorski, Chris Abbiss
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
In any athletic event, the ability to appropriately distribute energy is essential to prevent premature fatigue prior to the completion of the event. In sport science literature this is termed “pacing.” Within the past decade, research aiming to better understand the underlying mechanisms influencing the selection of an athlete’s pacing during exercise has dramatically increased. It is suggested that pacing is a combination of anticipation, knowledge of the end-point, prior experience and sensory feedback. In order to better understand the role each of these factors have in the regulation of pace, studies have often manipulated various conditions known to influence …

Running Injuries Due To Strike Patterns, Jamie M. Rogers
Running Injuries Due To Strike Patterns, Jamie M. Rogers
The Kabod
Running is a very repetitive activity that can lead to surmountable stresses to the body over time that could lead to injury. Running biomechanics can influence the effects that the body will experience. This paper will discuss the biomechanical effects that relate to two different strike patterns: rearfoot and forefoot. Research will be examined as to how the strike patterns can influence the major lower extremity joints: ankle, knee, and hip. Common injuries during running as related to strike pattern are also discussed through conclusions based on research studies.
