Understanding The “Gut Instinct” Of Expert Coaches During Talent Identification, Alexandra H. Roberts, Daniel Greenwood, Mandy Stanley, Clare Humberstone, Fiona Iredale, Annette Raynor
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Coaches are an integral part of talent identification in sport and are often used as the “gold standard” against which scientific methods of talent identification are compared. However, their decision-making during this process is not well understood. In this article, we use an ecological approach to explore talent identification in combat sports. We interviewed twenty-four expert, international-level coaches from the Olympic disciplines of boxing, judo, and taekwondo (age: 48.7 + 7.5 years; experience: 20.8 + 8.3 years). Findings indicated that when coaches identify talent they rely on “gut instinct”: intuitive judgements made without conscious thought, used to direct attention to …
Risk Of Low Energy Availability In Elite Male Athletes With Spinal Cord Injury, Savannah Glasgow
Risk Of Low Energy Availability In Elite Male Athletes With Spinal Cord Injury, Savannah Glasgow
All Master's Theses
Recent research examining male able-bodied athletes has suggested that males are at risk for low energy availability (LEA); however, there is a paucity of research pertaining to prevalence amongst male athletes with an impairment. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the risk of LEA and prevalence of symptoms related to Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S), including risk of disordered eating, hormonal profiles, and bone mineral density (BMD) scans, in male wheelchair para athletes. Collegiate- and national-level male athletes (n = 9) with spinal cord injury (SCI) completed 7-day concurrent diet and training logs, Eating Disorder Examination …
The Effect Of Intermittent Cooling On Simulated Basketball Game Performance, Dalton E. Cousin
The Effect Of Intermittent Cooling On Simulated Basketball Game Performance, Dalton E. Cousin

Biomechanical Comparison Of "Old" And "New" Cheer Shoes In Collegiate Cheerleaders, Abigail C. Johnson
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
INTRODUCTION: The sport of cheerleading requires that athletes perform with a high degree of flexibility, strength, endurance, and balance. The leading injury in cheerleading is a lateral, inversion, ankle sprain. As footwear serves as an interface between the foot and the surrounding environment, characteristics of shoes should be monitored to determine the effects on proprioceptive communication. No previous literature was found that examined the biomechanical differences between “Old” and “New” shoes in collegiate cheerleaders. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the biomechanical differences exhibited by collegiate cheerleaders while performing balance testing and step-down, landing tasks in “old” …

BACKGROUND: Early, accurate diagnosis of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) can improve clinical outcomes for patients, but mTBI remains difficult to diagnose because of reliance on subjective symptom reports. An objective biomarker could increase diagnostic accuracy and improve clinical outcomes. The aim of this study was to assess the ability of salivary noncoding RNA (ncRNA) to serve as a diagnostic adjunct to current clinical tools. We hypothesized that saliva ncRNA levels would demonstrate comparable accuracy for identifying mTBI as measures of symptom burden, neurocognition, and balance.
METHODS: This case‐control study involved 538 individuals. Participants included 251 individuals with mTBI, enrolled …
Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries As A Possible Risk Factor For Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tears In Female High School And College Athletes, Brooke Weyand
Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries As A Possible Risk Factor For Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tears In Female High School And College Athletes, Brooke Weyand
Capstone Showcase
Introduction: Both mild traumatic brain injuries (concussions) and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are among two of the most common, and most career-ending sports medicine injuries. Concussions often result from a blow to the head that can cause headaches, difficulty concentrating, photophobia, and memory loss. Concussion recovery often involved brain rest from athletics, screen exposure, reading, lights, and if severe enough, academics. The ACL is a ligament that is detrimental in stabilization of the knee joint. It connects the femur to the tibia within the joint, and can tear suddenly if it undergoes a quick twisting motion. ACL tears often …

Oral Contraceptives As Possible Acl Injury Prevention Method, Haley Schweizer
Capstone Showcase
ABSTRACT
Introduction: Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries are an upsetting setback for many athletes that require a long and costly recovery process. The injury rates are four times greater in women than men. Preventative measures that help to prevent ACL injuries are limited to stretching and strengthening. Therefore, this review aims to investigate if oral contraceptive [I] usage provides a possible new avenue for prevention of ACL injury [O] in young female athletes (ages 18-30) [P] compared to those that do not take oral contraceptives [C].
Methods: A literature review was performed though PubMed, Google Scholar, SCOPUS Database, and ClinicalKey …
College Athletes And Alcohol Use: The Need For Effective Prevention/Intervention Programs, Paige M. Craig
College Athletes And Alcohol Use: The Need For Effective Prevention/Intervention Programs, Paige M. Craig
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The literature review investigates the relationship between alcohol and college athletes. College athletes are a high-risk drinking group; alcohol use amongst collegiate athletes is a major concern due to the consequences associated with use. It is important to review student-athlete behavior and influences that contribute to alcohol use in order to design a program that effectively prevents use and intervenes use when it occurs. Results from original articles were used to support the need for effective prevention/intervention programs for this population based on the severity and frequency of use, negative effects of alcohol, and lack of effective prevention/intervention programs. Coaches, …

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The goals and objectives of this research project are to examine the reasoning behind the parents’ decision to provide extra opportunities for their children when they get involved in sports. The second goal and objective are to examine whether or not specialization in a single sport is increased due to the incentive to be the best at a specific sport and if there are any negative consequences due to the specialization aspect. The motivations for this work and for this research stem from the fact of pure interest and curiousness. By working at a sports performance gym, I have always …

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative case study explored the perceptions of two individuals with intellectual disabilities who participated in a person-centered physical training program that identified factors of motivation and influences on self-determined physical choices. The findings of this study revealed five factors that seemed to motivate participants to exercise; (a) enjoyable activities, (b) personalized program, (c) exercises that promoted health and positive self-images, (d) exercise routines that were familiar and safe, and (e) an exercise partnership with the trainer. Considering these factors of motivation, community leaders, administrators, and practitioners may promote self-determination and ultimately, impact participation by individuals with intellectual disabilities. Additionally, …

Insurance Status And Obesity As Predictors Of Cost In Trauma Care, Emily Homer
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Insurance is a vital factor in the billed cost to the patient, but to what degree does insurance explain the amount a patient is left to pay? Also, does obesity further influence patient’s billed cost? This thesis assesses the type of thoracic trauma patient, insurance status, and their billed cost. Database variables were analyzed in IBM SPSS 25. Table 1 characteristics were evaluated based on demographics and systematic hospital factors. Linear regressions used Private0_Government1 and BMI Obese n_y_ as independent variables while Total Patient Cost was the dependent variable. Private0_Government1 insurance explained .03% of Total Patient Charges. Private0_Government1 and BMI …

The goal of this study is to build a prognostic model to predict the severity of radiographic knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and to identify long-term disease progression risk factors for early intervention and treatment. We designed a long short-term memory (LSTM) model with an attention mechanism to predict Kellgren/Lawrence (KL) grade for knee osteoarthritis patients. The attention scores reveal a time-associated impact of different variables on KL grades. We also employed a fast causal inference (FCI) algorithm to estimate the causal relation of key variables, which will aid in clinical interpretability. Based on the clinical information of current visits, we accurately …

Even though the acute effects of pre-exercise static stretching and dynamic muscle activity on muscular and functional performance have been largely investigated, their effects on the corticospinal pathway are still unclear. For that reason, this study examined the acute effects of 5×20 s of static stretching, dynamic muscle activity and a control condition on spinal excitability, corticospinal excitability and plantar flexor neuromuscular properties. Fifteen volunteers were randomly tested on separate days. Transcranial magnetic stimulation was applied to investigate corticospinal excitability by recording the amplitude of the motorevoked potential (MEP) and the duration of the cortical silent period (cSP). Peripheral nerve …
