The Relationship Between Ffm And Vertical Jump In Male And Female Division One Collegiate Swimmers, Brady Fields, Steven Laflamme, Steven Couch
The Relationship Between Ffm And Vertical Jump In Male And Female Division One Collegiate Swimmers, Brady Fields, Steven Laflamme, Steven Couch
EXSI 432/532: Research Methods in Exercise Science: Research Proposal Posters
According to García-Ramos et al. (2016), the vertical jump is an essential factor that affects the push-off and start phases of the sport of swimming, which are crucial elements for improving stroke performance and efficiency. Explosive training strategies with resistance and light load work help improve power in the pushing motion. This may be done through plyometric training for out of the water workouts, or resistance training in the water (Makaruk et al., 2020). According to Sheppard et al. (2008), the vertical jump is considered a successful performance indicator in swimming. According to McArdle et al. (2015), the term body …
Comparison Of Handgrip Strength And Endurance In Collegiate Male Athletes, Allyson Butts, Danielle Norton, Jasmine Jones
Comparison Of Handgrip Strength And Endurance In Collegiate Male Athletes, Allyson Butts, Danielle Norton, Jasmine Jones
EXSI 432/532: Research Methods in Exercise Science: Research Proposal Posters
According to Wang et al. (2018), handgrip strength is an indicator of overall strength and a predictor of strength outcomes. Handgrip strength reflects muscular strength as well as motor unit recruitment and coordination, and neuromuscular control. Elite and successful athletes tend to show greater handgrip strength in comparison to sub-elite and less successful counterparts (Fry et al., 2004; Cronin et al., 2017). This may be due to the sport-specific nature of neuromuscular adaptations (Shields et al., 1999). For men between the ages of 18 and 24, absolute dominant (D) handgrip strength averages 47.0 kg +/- 8.1 kg (Wang et al., …

EXSI 432/532: Research Methods in Exercise Science: Research Proposal Posters
A Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a way to analyze movement patterns and observe mobility and stability deficits. The FMS test consists of a deep squat, hurdle step, incline lunge, shoulder mobility, active straight-leg raise, trunk stability, and rotary stability movement patterns. The score of the FMS can range from 0-3, 0 being the lowest. In this study, researchers compared FMS scores between male and female, NCAA, D1, swimmers. According to Anderson et. al (2015), Healthy secondary school female athletes scored lower on the total composite than healthy secondary school male athletes. Females also scored lower on the following individual …

Body Composition Variables Correlation With Relative Handgrip Strength In Male Athletes Compared To Non-Athletes, Olivia Crews, Baylee Short, Steven Couch
EXSI 432/532: Research Methods in Exercise Science: Research Proposal Posters
According to Franchini et al. (2018) absolute handgrip strength (HGS) increases within different weight classifications, whereas higher relative strength has been seen in light weight categories. The purpose of this study is to discover the extent to which lean muscle mass (LMM), fat free mass (FFM), age, and height correlate to HGS in student-athletes compared to non-student-athlete males. It is hypothesized that having a higher parameter in body mass, height, and FFM will result in a higher HGS in athletes than in non-athletes. It is secondly hypothesized that an increase in age will decrease absolute handgrip strength.

Comparison Of High Vs. Low Fat Diet Influence On Vo2max In Adolescent Elite Female Soccer Players, Laura Sloan
EXSI 432/532: Research Methods in Exercise Science: Research Proposal Posters
Aerobic fitness relies on ample storage of all macronutrients that come from one’s diet. Dietary recommendations were introduced in the United States in 1977, which have been disputed as to whether a low- or high-fat diet is better for performance. For female athletes, more uncertainty is present due to the lack of research on this population’s dietary guidelines. There is a need for further research comparing high- and low-fat diet influence on the aerobic capacity of adolescent female athletes. This study recruited 30 elite female soccer players, ages 16-18 from Charlotte, NC, who were randomly assigned to either a low- …

The Effects Of Food Intake & Physical Activity On Resting Metabolic Rate, Jasmine Jones, Alexi Card, Danielle Burke, Abby Callahan
EXSI 432/532: Research Methods in Exercise Science: Research Proposal Posters
Resting metabolic rate (RMR) measures the energy a person requires to sustain vital body function while at rest. RMR is the most considerable element of total daily energy expenditure (McArdle et al., 2015). RMR varies depending on gender, age, weight, fat-free body mass (FFM), and physical fitness level (McMurray et al., 2014). During this study, RMR was measured indirectly by measuring the volume of oxygen consumption (VO2), the volume of carbon dioxide production (VCO2) (McMurray et al., 2014). The proper protocol for measuring RMR was to have the subject complete an overnight fast and refrain from working 12-18 hours before …

The Effect Of The 6-Minute Walk Test On Vertical Leap, Sophia Smith, Alexi Card, Kristen Flateau
EXSI 432/532: Research Methods in Exercise Science: Research Proposal Posters
The vertical jump test is a test often used to assess lower body power (Haff and Triplett, 2016). The six-minute walk test (6MWT) has been useful in assessing for a variety of respiratory or cardiac diseases (Olsson, 2005). The 6MWT requires participants to walk as far as they can in the six minutes, which is physically taxing on the body (Olsson, 2005). Studies have found that a gradual, progressive warmup can improve performance whereas static stretching can negatively impact performance (Vetter, 2007). The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of a 6MWT, and a 6-minute treadmill walk …
Psychosocial Outcomes Of Orthopedic Injuries: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between The Athlete And The Athletic Trainer, Hannah Barnett
Psychosocial Outcomes Of Orthopedic Injuries: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between The Athlete And The Athletic Trainer, Hannah Barnett
Honors Projects
An analysis on the impact of the level of social support from athletic trainers on the outcomes of orthopedic injuries in athletes. The foundational model for this research is Wiese-Bjornstal’s Integrated Model (1998). This model examines the effect of athletes’ emotional responses on their recovery. Social support from the athletic trainer can help mediate negative emotional responses and encourage positive emotional responses, which is why social support is crucial to recovery. Athletes with higher levels of perceived social support from their athletic trainers had more success with rehabilitation. This report consists of a review of the existing literature on psychosocial …

Transformations: Presentation Slides
In this research project, my goal was to determine if using the sensory-based equipment, used in Sensory Fit Families, as a bridge helped promote interdisciplinary discussions leading to a better or more effective service delivery model. I did this research through virtual interviews and transcribing the data. I examined teachers’ and therapists’ perceptions toward interdisciplinary collaboration when delivering online (virtual) instruction to preschool-aged children with disabilities. With this, I was able to triangulate key information on relevant content, activities, and feedback that focus on a unique collaboration between Physical Education teachers, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech Pathologists, and Special Education …
The Collegiate Dancer As An Athlete: An Argument For Athletic Strength & Conditioning In Collegiate Dance Programs, Samantha Phillips
The Collegiate Dancer As An Athlete: An Argument For Athletic Strength & Conditioning In Collegiate Dance Programs, Samantha Phillips
Senior Theses
Most collegiate sports athletes participate in compulsory athletic strength and conditioning; however, such requirements are not prevalent in university dance programs. Designed as arts degree programs, most requirements revolve around technique, history, pedagogy, theoretical understandings of composition, rehearsals, dance anatomy, and in certain cognates, education. The growing incorporation and paradigm shift of dance as a sport, as well as an art, supports the inclusion of collegiate dance programs into similar considerations, regulations, and requirements as competitive collegiate sports teams. As such, this is an argument and recommendation for the inclusion of athletic strength and conditioning in collegiate dance programs.
Parkinson's Disease And Exercise: Steps Into A Hopeful Future, Jacob Barker
Parkinson's Disease And Exercise: Steps Into A Hopeful Future, Jacob Barker
Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
In the world of medicine and disease interventions, exercise is too often underlooked as a viable form of treatment or complementary treatment to medication. This is especially true with Parkinson’s Disease, a disease that attacks the basal ganglia of the brain and impairs neuromuscular function. In my analysis, I read a perspective from a PD patient, Gerry Hill, who has struggled with the disease himself and how he used physical activity to aid in his battle with the disease for both physical and psychological aid. Additionally, I performed research to understand how exercise benefits function within the brain. Aerobic exercise, …
Oxygen Deprivation Masks For Training, Brittany M. Hanlon
Oxygen Deprivation Masks For Training, Brittany M. Hanlon
Student Publications
Oxygen deprivation masks are being advertised towards athletes as a piece of fitness equipment that can simulate the effects of high altitude, as well as a respiratory muscle training device. Studies that investigated the claims as to whether ODMs increased VO2max and improved endurance were looked into. Experimental data did not find that the use of these masks increased VO2max, nor was there any supporting data to prove that it improved endurance. The function of ODMs as a training tool to increase respiratory muscle strength was also examined. There were contradicting results between the three different studies examined. One study …
Examination Of Energy Needs In Male And Female Physically Active Individuals, Savanna Griffin
Examination Of Energy Needs In Male And Female Physically Active Individuals, Savanna Griffin
Senior Theses
Content: The Female Athlete Triad refers to three interrelated components: 1) low energy availability (LEA), with or without an eating disorder (ED); 2) harmful and physiologically impactful hormonal changes; and 3) alterations in bone mineral density, which are often experienced by individuals engaged in organized sports or other intense physical activities. This phenomenon is called the Female Athlete Triad because the relationship of components has thus far been observed primarily in females. A new term, the Male Athlete Triad, has been recently developed to describe the same phenomenon in males. LEA occurs when dietary energy intake (EI) is inadequate to …
Exploring Risk Factors For Maternal Mortality: A Qualitative Study, Grace Lowe
Exploring Risk Factors For Maternal Mortality: A Qualitative Study, Grace Lowe
Honors Theses
Maternal mortality, the death of a woman during pregnancy or within one year of delivery, claims approximately 700 women annually in the United States. In Ohio, the rate is slightly less than 16 women each year. Knowledge and intervention of risk factors, particularly the non-medical factors for maternal mortality are crucial to preventing these deaths. This qualitative interview study with community health workers identified specific risk factors Ohio mothers face and how they are being addressed in the field by individuals who work directly with pregnant and postpartum women. The interviews uncovered various interventions that are recommended to reduce the …

Increase In 1rm Back Squat After Abdominal Stabilizing Maneuvers, Caro Els
All NMU Master's Theses
Increasing intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) during free weight exercises can protect the lumbar spine from excess movement; a cause of lower back pain. Abdominal bracing (AB) and abdominal hollowing (AH) are two stabilizing maneuvers that increase IAP. Previous literature primarily compared AH and AB in therapy settings on bodyweight single joint movements. The effect of AB and AH during a multi-joint movement involving a maximum or near maximum external load is unknown. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of AB and AH on lower limb muscle activity and the maximum amount of external weight lifted during a …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: It has recently been identified that manipulating carbohydrate availability around exercise activity can enhance training-induced metabolic adaptations. Despite this approach being accepted in the athletic populations, athletes do not systematically follow the guidelines. Digital environments appear to allow nutritionists to deliver this intervention at scale, reducing expensive human coaching time. Yet, digitally delivered dietary behavior change interventions for athletes and the coaching strategy to support them are still novel concepts within sports nutrition. Methods/design: We aim to recruit 900 athletes across the UK. 500 athletes will be recruited to test the feasibility of a novel menu planner mobile application …
