The Effect Of Ankle Foot Orthotics On Collegiate Athletes’ Sprint Biomechanics, Elizabeth A. Starns, Paige Tucker May 2024

The Effect Of Ankle Foot Orthotics On Collegiate Athletes’ Sprint Biomechanics, Elizabeth A. Starns, Paige Tucker

Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association

OBJECTIVE

Carbon composite dynamic response ankle foot orthotics (CCDRAFOs) are lightweight ankle braces originally made to help pathologically involved legs walk more efficiently1. Since CCDRAFOs are traditionally not used on able-bodied individuals, there is limited information on the effects of CCDRAFOs on sprint performance of able-bodied athletes. However, the technology behind CCDRAFOs effectiveness has been suggested to have ergogenic aid properties2-5. This study’s purpose was to evaluate the effects of CCDRAFOs on collegiate athletes’ lower extremity biomechanics, specifically ankle and knee joint angles.

Neurocognitive Performance Differences Between Athletes Who Are Deaf Or Hard-Of-Hearing And Athletes Who Are Hearing, Matthew P. Brancaleone, Jaclyn Caccese, James Onate May 2024

Neurocognitive Performance Differences Between Athletes Who Are Deaf Or Hard-Of-Hearing And Athletes Who Are Hearing, Matthew P. Brancaleone, Jaclyn Caccese, James Onate

Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association

OBJECTIVE

There are over 71,000 college students in the United States who are deaf or hard-of-hearing (D/HoH), with many participating in athletics. Athletes who are D/HoH have similar concussion rates to athletes who are hearing at the collegiate level. Differences in neurocognitive baseline performance between athletes who are D/HoH and athletes who are hearing may exist due to misunderstanding of written English instructions or differences in sensory processing. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare neurocognitive performance between athletes who are hearing and athletes who are D/HoH.

Using Standardized Patients As A Tool To Explore Student Critical Thinking, Sara Stiltner, Andrea Cripps May 2024

Using Standardized Patients As A Tool To Explore Student Critical Thinking, Sara Stiltner, Andrea Cripps

Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association

OBJECTIVE

Standardized patients (SP) are a tool utilized regularly in athletic training to promote student confidence and independent thinking. SP are widely used in nursing, physical therapy, and in over 80% of medical education programs.1 The use of SP to supplement student learning and career preparation, in the undergraduate setting has been a validated in increasing student confidence.3 SP’s are a tool that utilize an actor trained to portray a patient who has a specific medical condition or illness and the actor is trained to respond to the students in a consistent manner.1,2 SP’s allow students the …

Within-Day Reliability Of Submaximal Running Economy Testing: Implications For Advanced Footwear Testing, Garrett Oehlert May 2024

Within-Day Reliability Of Submaximal Running Economy Testing: Implications For Advanced Footwear Testing, Garrett Oehlert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Running economy (RE) has been identified as a critical component of endurance performance. Alterations in footwear have shown to significantly impact RE. Quantifying reliability of within-day RE measures may determine differences that could be expected when testing footwear. PURPOSE: Assess within-day reliability of RE testing on a calibrated metabolic system. METHODS: Trained male distance runners (n=10) were recruited to perform 4 × 5-minute trials (set speed, in habitual running shoes) at their estimated marathon pace (5-minute rest period) during a single visit to the lab. Oxygen consumption (VO2) data were collected during the final two minutes of each stage and …

A Case Study On The Effects Of Pregnancy On Expiratory Flow Limitation (Efl) And Operating Lung Volumes During Exercise, Hannah Young May 2024

A Case Study On The Effects Of Pregnancy On Expiratory Flow Limitation (Efl) And Operating Lung Volumes During Exercise, Hannah Young

Masters Theses, 2020-current

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of pregnancy on expiratory flow limitation (EFL) and operating lung volumes (end expiratory lung volume and end inspiratory lung volume; EELV and EILV) during exercise, with an exploratory aim to assess differences in the above measures between exercise modalities. EFL has been shown to occur in several other subgroups but has never been studied in pregnant individuals. We followed one 35-year-old pregnant subject throughout her pregnancy, completing exercise and pulmonary testing every other week from 8 weeks gestation to 38 weeks gestation, and once again ~8 weeks postpartum. Testing was …

Impact Of Fluid Restriction On Pulmonary Function During Exercise, Kylie Moulin May 2024

Impact Of Fluid Restriction On Pulmonary Function During Exercise, Kylie Moulin

Masters Theses, 2020-current

Exercise performance is impaired by dehydration and, separately, can be negatively impacted in scenarios where there is pulmonary expiratory flow limitation (EFL). Interestingly, there may be an interaction between dehydration and pulmonary function. Previous work has suggested that resting pulmonary function is impaired by mild dehydration through the collapse of small/unsupported airways. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of fluid restriction on EFL presence and other pulmonary dynamics such as operating lung volumes. METHODS: 12 healthy active adults (8 M and 4 F) aged 20 ± 2 years performed a VO2Peak test on a …

Physical Activity And Knee Health Outcomes After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, David Werner May 2024

Physical Activity And Knee Health Outcomes After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, David Werner

Theses & Dissertations

Anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions (ACLR) have increased in incidence worldwide. After ACLR, individuals are at higher risk for developing early onset knee osteoarthritis. Individuals after ACLR also participate in less physical activity (PA), contributing to an increased risk for early onset knee osteoarthritis and poor overall health outcomes.

The two goals of this work were to 1) determine the relationship between PA and knee health outcomes 18 months after ACLR and 2) determine the feasibility and acceptability of a PA intervention early after ACLR that considered participant thoughts and feelings.

Findings for the first goal suggest that there is no …

Njcaa Athletes' Psychological Preparedness To Return To Sport Following Injury Without The Use Of Psychological Readiness Tools, Lyndsey E. Gough May 2024

Njcaa Athletes' Psychological Preparedness To Return To Sport Following Injury Without The Use Of Psychological Readiness Tools, Lyndsey E. Gough

Master of Science in Kinesiology

The purpose of this study was to evaluate NJCAA level athletes’ psychological readiness to return to play (RTP) after injury without the use of screening tools. Confidence levels and mood disturbances experienced by athletes while they were injured and first returning to sport following injury were investigated using mixed methodology. Forty-one National Junior College Athletic Association level athletes participated in an online survey that utilized the Injury-Psychological Readiness to Return to Sport Scale (I-PRRS), Brunel Mood Rating Scale (BRUMS), and open-ended questions related to mental readiness. The average total score for the I-PRRS scale was 41.6 while the BRUMS subscale …

Major Injuries Sustained In Towable Watersports, Elijah J. Klein May 2024

Major Injuries Sustained In Towable Watersports, Elijah J. Klein

Honors Thesis

Towable watersports are activities where a participant is being pulled by a motorized watercraft while wearing or holding onto a floating device. Watersports come with many known risks such as drowning, whiplash, and fatigue; however, other injuries are often overlooked or misunderstood. With this thesis, I aimed to explore injury records pertaining to towable watersports and attempted to identify prevalent injury trends in wakeboarding, waterskiing, and water tubing. Using the National Electronic Injury Survey System (NEISS), a public database with yearly injury records, I compiled information related to the relevant sports from 2013 to 2022. Included with the data is …
