What Are The Most Effective Non-Pharmacologic Practices For The Management Of Primary Insomnia In Adults?, Alexis Myhre
Theses and Graduate Projects
Objective: Primary insomnia is a mental health condition in which individuals struggle with falling asleep, staying asleep or early morning awakenings. As there are many treatments available that claim to help those with primary insomnia, this review looks specifically at therapy, exercise and acupuncture as management strategies.
Methods: This is a review of 15 peer-reviewed, randomized controlled trials completed in 2018 or later with one additional study completed in 2010. Also, there are four non primary insomnia based studies used to support the efficacy of alternative therapies to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). All the studies used in this review come …
Optimizing Nutrition Status And Patient Outcomes In Adults Receiving Post-Icu Care, Rachelle Pass
Optimizing Nutrition Status And Patient Outcomes In Adults Receiving Post-Icu Care, Rachelle Pass
Theses and Graduate Projects
Background: Nutrition interventions for hospitalized patients can provide meaningful benefit on patient recovery outcome, length of hospital admission, and overall healthcare costs. Preventing and treating malnutrition is one aspect of optimizing patient outcomes following a prolonged clinical course, including stays in the intensive care unit (ICU).
Purpose: This literature review aims to address how nutrition status can be maximized for a patient’s post intensive care unit clinical course. While early enteral nutrition (EN) when appropriate is accepted as optimal care, there is little standardization for removal of devices to provide artificially administered nutrition and hydration (AANH).
Methods: A comprehensive literature …

The grave is the final resting place for our physical remains, yet in our culture, we continue to visit the grave to be reminded of our ancestors' spirits. Coco, Encanto, and The Book of Life stand as examples of how our customs and rituals have been exploited in mass media for the world to consume and misuse its aesthetics. This reflection is not about a particular holiday, but how our Xicanx Texanx ancestors passed down knowledge from generation to generation, keeping our stories alive, and shaping our future—it is autohistoria-teoria in praxis (Arfuso 2021). In three broad approaches we explore …

Bringing An Understanding Of Elementary School Teachers’ Rationale For Their Classroom Design To Ot Practice, Hannah Berry, Otd, Mscaot, Otr
Bringing An Understanding Of Elementary School Teachers’ Rationale For Their Classroom Design To Ot Practice, Hannah Berry, Otd, Mscaot, Otr
Post-Professional Occupational Therapy Doctorate Culminating Presentations
Introduction
Physical, sensory, and social aspects of the classroom environment directly influence students’ behavior, learning and academic achievement. Both teachers and occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) approach the design, adaptation, and use of the classroom from their respective knowledge base (Wintle, et al, 2022). Grandisson et al. (2020) noted that OTPs can often know very little about the school personnel, their pedagogy, the school culture, or the classroom routines. This can lead to a disconnect between OTPs recommendations for classroom environment modifications and teachers’ design and use of the same space.
Objectives
The purpose of this study was to explore the …

Coaching In Context Fidelity Measure: A Linguistic Validation To Hispano-America Spanish, Jorge L. Torres-Vélez, Otd, Otr/L
Post-Professional Occupational Therapy Doctorate Culminating Presentations
Introduction
Coaching in Context (CinC) is an emerging intervention approach used by occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs). A growing body of literature has found CinC to be effective when used by OTPs with various clients. The CinC approach was manualized by publishing a visual representation of the model and developing a fidelity measure. Both were written in English by North American English-speaking researchers. Recently, the CinC Fidelity Measure was translated into Spanish to be used by Spanish-speaking OTPs but there was a need to conduct a linguistic validation to avoid difficulties in implementation, due to poor comprehension, and avoid inaccurate, misinterpreted, …

Workload Model In School-Based Occupational Therapy Practice: Administrators' Perspective, Rachel K. Boileau, Otd, Ms, Otr/L
Post-Professional Occupational Therapy Doctorate Culminating Presentations
Background: School-based occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) experience alarming levels of burnout and poor work satisfaction related to excessive caseload (Garfinkel & Seruya, 2018; Stephenson, 2019). The workload model has the potential for positive results (AOTA, 2014), as it compensates an OTP for all tasks performed, not just student-facing time (Garfinkel & Seruya, 2018; Corley et al., 2023). However, this model, has been promoted by the American Occupational Therapy Association for more than a decade, is not widely used (Garfinkel & Seruya, 2018; Corley et al., 2023). The reasons for the slow espousal of the model are not yet understood, but …
Home Health “Start Of Care” Policy Change: Examining Occupational Therapist Engagement In New Responsibilities, Megan Atkinson, Otd, Ma, Otr/L
Home Health “Start Of Care” Policy Change: Examining Occupational Therapist Engagement In New Responsibilities, Megan Atkinson, Otd, Ma, Otr/L
Post-Professional Occupational Therapy Doctorate Culminating Presentations
A 2022 federal policy change allowed occupational therapists (OTs) to open home health cases in a process known as the Start of Care or SOC, a responsibility previously limited to nurses, physical therapists, and speech-language pathologists. The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) recognizes the opportunity for increased professional value and service utilization and called upon practitioners to advocate such and to educate home health agencies about the change. Since clinicians’ practice patterns are directly impacted by such policy changes, because current OT participation in and perspective on new responsibilities were unknown, it was important to hear directly from these therapists. …

Exploring The Benefits Of Blazepod Technology Through An Occupational Therapy Lens, Carson Bryan, Cynthia Haynes
Summer 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium
BlazePod technology is an intervention used successfully in Physical Therapy (PT) to address motor coordination deficits, however, there is limited evidence that OTs can successfully use it as a preparatory intervention with individuals who have motor coordination and cognitive deficits and are unable to independently complete everyday occupations such as dressing, bathing, toileting, etc.
The focus of this project was to provide evidence that supports how the occupational therapy profession can utilize BlazePod technology as a preparatory intervention tool to address motor coordination and cognitive deficits that in turn will enhance ADLs and IADLs.
