Our objective was to provide expert consensus on best practices for anatomy teaching and training on ultrasound-guided botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT-A) injection for specialists involved in treating spasticity and dystonia. Nine experts (three neurologists; six physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians) participated in a three-round modified Delphi process. Over three rounds, experts reached consensus on 15 of 16 statements describing best practices for anatomy and BoNT-A injection training. They unanimously agreed that knowledge of the target audience, including their needs and current competency, is crucial when designing training programs. Experts also agreed that alignment between instructors is essential to ensure …

This capstone project addressed some of these barriers. A needs assessment was conducted at an elementary school, which helped guide the development and implementation of the adaptive sports program, which is discussed in detail.

The Experience Of Pet Ownership In Transitional Housing, Kathryn Holden Ots, Susan Macdermott Otd, Otr/L

Summer 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium

25% of people experiencing homelessness have pets, but few transitional housing programs allow pets (Rhoades et al., 2015); therefore, there is a gap in the literature about the experience of pet ownership during the transitional housing process. This study aimed to explore pet owners' experiences at a transitional housing site in San Diego County. The student interviewed two current dog owners and four recent dog owners. All participants prioritized their pets because it was their strongest relationship. The prioritization of their dogs positively and negatively influenced occupational engagement. While receiving services, owners experienced consequences when separated from their dogs, including …

Summer 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium

More than 15 million people globally are living with spinal cord injury (SCI). Only half of people with SCI engage in leisure activities and approximately 71% of the population reports dissatisfaction in their leisure participation. There are numerous intrinsic and extrinsic barriers that lead to these significant declines in leisure exploration and participation, including lack of knowledge and inaccurate accessible online information. In correlation with these barriers, occupational therapy practitioners underutilize leisure participation during the rehabilitation process for people with SCI and this is an underreported topic in the literature. Occupational therapy practitioners and people with SCI lack knowledge of …

An Occupational Therapy Perspective Of Post Secondary Transitions For High School Students: Considering Socioeconomics And Opportunities, Aubrie Howell, Mary Greer, Kelley Spell-Hernandez

Summer 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium

In most cases, an occupational therapist’s role in a post-secondary transition includes improving adolescents with disabilities’ functional preparedness to transition from a special education setting, into adult-based roles. Much of this work is explained by the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), and only encompasses occupational therapy’s role in post-secondary transitions for adolescents with a diagnosed disability. Unfortunately, these resources, programs, and services are not available to adolescents who do not have a disability. This barrier of not providing similar services or programs to adolescents without a disability creates a lack of opportunity for these individuals to explore possible career paths. …

Femoral Geometry And Activity Type: Factors That Influence Loading In The Dysplastic Hip, Molly C. Shepherd

WUSM Theses and Dissertations – All Programs

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a bony condition characterized by a shallow hip socket that reduces coverage of the femoral head and leads to instability, resulting in altered joint loading and an increased risk for early onset osteoarthritis (OA). Understanding the factors that influence loading in the dysplastic hip is necessary for developing effective treatment strategies and improving patient outcomes. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine multiple factors that could impact joint loading in DDH: 1) sport specific activities, 2) femoral version (FV) deformities, and 3) derotational femoral osteotomy (DFO) correction for FV deformities. Manualized Occupational Therapy Intervention For Children And Adolescents With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Adam Mcmahon

Student Capstone Papers

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in children can cause physiological and psychological reactions that can lead to impaired executive functioning and self-regulation skills that interfere with occupational engagement. Occupational Therapy (OT) utilizes an occupational perspective to treat children with PTSD. However, there is an absence of a manualized OT intervention in the literature that incorporates an occupation-based approach, utilizes graded occupation as the primary intervention, and tracks treatment progress and outcomes. The purpose of this capstone project was to create a manualized OT intervention protocol for OT practitioners to treat children with PTSD guided by the model of human occupation and …

Optimizing Nutrition Status And Patient Outcomes In Adults Receiving Post-Icu Care, Rachelle Pass

Theses and Graduate Projects

Background: Nutrition interventions for hospitalized patients can provide meaningful benefit on patient recovery outcome, length of hospital admission, and overall healthcare costs. Preventing and treating malnutrition is one aspect of optimizing patient outcomes following a prolonged clinical course, including stays in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Purpose: This literature review aims to address how nutrition status can be maximized for a patient’s post intensive care unit clinical course. While early enteral nutrition (EN) when appropriate is accepted as optimal care, there is little standardization for removal of devices to provide artificially administered nutrition and hydration (AANH).

Methods: A comprehensive literature …
