Motor Nerve Conduction Velocity Across Elbow Of Ulnar Nerve Among Young Chinese, Ruey-Chyuan Chiou, Fu-Kong Lieu, Shih-Pei Lee, Shing-Ming Sung

Because there is no standard data available for normal Chinese in assessing patients with tardy ulnar palsy, we performed this study to establish normal values of motor nerve conduction velocity (NCV) in crossing elbow.Twenty subjects, age between 20-35 years, were examined with Meditro Model 440 EMG, the room temperature was controlled around 22.0±1℃ by air conditioning. The results of mean normal motor NCV in different segments of ulnar nerve are as follows: below elbow to wrist is 66.45±6.28 m/sec; above elbow to wrist is 57.72±3.99 m/sec; across elbow is 46.64±5.81 m/sec. Serum Creatine Kinase Activity And Its Isoenzymes In Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Chue-Fun Chen, I-Nan Lien, Fung-Jou Lu

Serum creatine phosphokinase (CK) and its three isoenzymes (CK-MM, CK-MB and CK-BB types) were studied on 23 patients with well-defined Duchenne muscular dystrophy and 24 normal subjects. The cardiac status of the patients was evaluated with ECG examination. The functional capacity of each patient was evaluated and divided into 9 calsses.The CK activities (IU/L) of the patients were significantly higher than those of the normal subjects (p＜0.05). CK isoenzyme analysis with electrophoresis on cellulose acetate revaled that the sera of the 24 normal subjects contained only CK-MM isoenzyme. 肢體殘障不僅對殘障者本身以及病人家屬有所影響，同時殘障者對它的看法亦會直接影響復健工作的進行。各國殘障者對生理殘障又因社會文化，經濟背景等的相異，而各有不同的看法。關於這問題，過去外國雖有研究，我國卻鮮有報告，值得我們去探討。本研究乃對十名因中風偏癱病人，十名因脊髓損傷下身癱瘓病人以及十名截肢病人，採用當面問卷方式，調查其對生理殘障的看法，作為今後復健工作的參考。結果發現大多數的病人，認為因脊髓損傷無法坐或站是最嚴重的問題，以下依次為雙臂癱瘓，因內臟疾病無法坐或站，雙手切除，雙眼全盲，雙腿癱瘓，雙腿完全切除，偏癱，一手一腿切除，最不嚴重的是容貌的殘缺。除了病人本身因生理殘障不同，看法略有不一樣外，病人對殘障的看法亦受到年齡的影響，同時似乎與疾病在目前能否醫療，能否復健有密切關係。另外，在本研究中發現，死亡所引起的心理壓力有很大的變異性，且病人的年齡，殘障的類型並不影響其對死亡的看法。

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of therapeutic touch to anxiety, blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate of 30 hospitalized women between the ages of 30 and 65 with the medical diagnosis of cancer. Subjects were matched into three intervention groups; three consecutive days subjects received a five minute intervention by therapeutic touch, casual touch, or no touch. A-trait and A-state anxiety were measured by the Self-Evaluation Questionnaires developed by Spielberger, Gorsuch, and Lushene. A factorial two-way analysis of variance revealed that subjects who received intervention by therapeutio touch experienced a significant reduction in A-state …

Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this study was to determine if classroom laboratory time could be reduced in a basic physical agents course. Fifty-seven junior physical therapy students were randomly assigned to three laboratory sections. All students received identical lectures, demonstrations, course materials, and laboratory manuals. The control group, Section 1, received supervision and assistance during laboratory practice. Students in Section 2 and Section 3 worked independent of instructor supervision but could receive assistance from the instructor in an adjacent room. Translation Of The Tibia During Isometric Contraction Of The Quadriceps, Charles V. Connors

The purpose of this study was to determine in normal knees, and in knees with anterior cruciate ligament absence, what effect maximal voluntary isometric contraction of the quadriceps has on translation of the tibia on the femur. Ten subjects with bilaterally normal knees, and nine subjects with one normal knee and the contralateral knee having an arthroscopic finding of absent anterior cruciate ligament were tested. Tibial translation was measured with a dial indicator at 15, 45 and 60 degrees of knee flexion. There was a measurable anterior translation of the tibia in all knees. A survey of incidence of spinal cord injury (SCI) was made in 15 hospitals in Taipei city from Jan. 1978 to Dec. 1979. A total of 196 new SCI patients were enrolled during the period. Among them, 44 cases were residents of Taipei city, revealing the annual incidence of SCI in Taipei city to be 10 per million population. The other 152 cases were residents of other parts of the country. Accordingly, it is estimated that about 170 persons are suffering SCI annually in the whole Taiwan Area.
