The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that chewing gum for 5 minutes on the involved side at levels less than maximal contraction will decrease resting muscle tone in the masseter muscle as demonstrated through surface electromyography.; This study examined 40 normal subjects as well as 6 people diagnosed with TMD. The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) estimates the number of therapists in the nation's occupational therapy workforce at 46,357. Silvergate (1994) estimates a 71% shortage based on the actual vacancies for occupational therapy personnel currently exists. In response to the growing demand for occupational therapists, the number of academic programs in occupational therapy has increased. Currently there are 85 accredited occupational therapy programs and 30 developing programs in the United States. In addition, for every newly available student space in professional-level programs, there were a reported 3.4 applicants. The purpose of this research was to determine the prevalence of use of alternative treatments by physical therapists in Michigan, what approaches are used most often and if use of alternative techniques is associated with practice characteristics. A questionnaire listing 20 treatment techniques which met the operational definition of alternative was mailed to a random sample of 300 licensed physical therapists in Michigan. Number of modalities used, frequency of use for each alternative treatment, average caseload treated, and relationships between modality use and characteristic of practitioners were determined. The purpose of this study was to assess commonly referring Michigan physicians' knowledge of physical therapy, and its impact on favorability toward, and utilization of, its services. Three hundred questionnaires were sent to physicians of orthopedics, neurology, pediatrics, physical medicine & rehabilitation, and general practice. The usable return rate was 22 percent. Technical, professional, and overall knowledge scores, as well as utilization patterns were compared across medical specialty, practice location, and years of experience. Water aerobics is one mode of exercise that is gaining popularity. Water aerobics allows adults who participate in an exercise program to improve their cardiorespiratory fitness. The purpose of this study was to determine if water aerobic training is as effective as land dance aerobic training in improving cardiorespiratory fitness in sedentary healthy adults. Eighteen subjects participated in this study; nine in dance aerobics and nine in water aerobics. Based on Roy's Model of Adaptation, this study examined the relationship between social support and functional independence following hip fracture. A descriptive correlational design was used with a convenience sample of 29 women age 65 and older. The Personal Resource Questionnaire was used to measure social support and the Functional Independence Measure was used to measure locomotion as an aspect of physical function.; Data indicated that women who had higher levels of functional independence one week following hip fracture had higher levels of social support. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of aerobic exercise training to improve balance in healthy adults over age 65. Twenty-five habitual exercisers (mean age 75.3 yrs.) and 25 control subjects (mean age 72.8 yrs.) were recruited from a senior day center. Balance was measured by the functional reach test. A two-sample t-test revealed no significantly higher difference in the mean balance score of the exercise group compared to the control group. Regression analysis indicated that none of the other variables collected (age, group, or level of fitness) were significant predictors of the functional reach scores. There …

Five cases with complex partial seizure, four boys and one girl, were included in this study, Their ages of onset ranged from 3 to11 years old. Frequency of seizure ranged from 2 to3 fits per month to 50 to 60 fits per day. Four cases were right-handers, one case was left-hander. All of them had normal intelligence. Most children with congenital heart disease (CHD) were restricted in their daily activities, which can affect their normal psychosocial development. In this study, we used cardiopulmonary stress testing to evaluate the cardiopulmonary responses of children with congenital heart disease surgery.The result showed that the pulmonary function was within normal limit. Though the incidence rate of abnormal ECG during exercise test was 54%, most of the subjects were asymptomatic. The percentage of functional aerobic impairment (FAI) was 22%, but is clinically insignifieant. They were divided into two groups. Twenty-six cases with complete motor paralysis below lesion site (Frankel A or B) were placed in Group A, the other 24 cases with incomplete motor function (Frankel C or D) were placed in Group B. A survey of urological problems in island-wide chronic spinal cord injuries was done by questionnaires and telephone from December 1992 to June 1993. Four hundred and three responses (48.26% of total samples) were collected for data analysis.There were 343 males and 60 females in this study. The diagnostic criteria of Brachmann-de Lange syndrome includes: 1. congenital malformations; 2. growth retardation; 3. neurodevelopmental delay. Cerebral amyloid angiopathy, defined as deposition of amyloid in the walls of brain vessels, is belived to be a common cause of intracerebral hemorrhage in the elderly. It differentiates from the intracerebral hemorrhage of hypertension by its specific location of bleeding. The hematoma from cerebral amyloid angiopathy, sometimes multilobar, is always located in the brain cortices and the white matter beneath them. This qualitative study was conducted to explore and describe the role experience of five women whose lives were disrupted by a traumatic spinal cord injury and who later returned to their communities after completing intensive rehabilitation programs. In-depth interviews and participant observations were used to examine the experiences of these women. The findings exemplify how the women's use of adaptation and negotiation and the development of a new role as self-advocate facilitated the reestablishment of their life roles. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of cardiac patients' health beliefs regarding exercise and their adherence to an exercise program following a documented cardiac event. A sample of 90 subjects, recovering from a recent cardiac event, was selected from two acute care medical centers in southwestern Michigan and northwestern Michigan.
