Spirituality has become an increasingly important topic in healthcare and specifically in occupational therapy. Previous studies of spirituality in occupational therapy indicated that while therapists believed spirituality was important to health and rehabilitation potential, few therapists reported incorporating spirituality into treatment (Engquist, Short-DeGraff, Gliner, & Oltjenbruns, 1997; Howe, 1996; Rose, 1999). This study utilized a survey design to examine occupational therapists' current beliefs and practices regarding spirituality, as well as asking therapists to identify barriers to the use of spirituality in treatment.

Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) effectively decreases the morbidity and mortality of carbon monoxide poisoning . Immediate HBO treatment is indicated as it yields a more rapid and greater neuropsychological recovery. HBO significantly decreases the half life of carboxy hemoglobin (COHb) and increases the tissue clearance of residual carbon monoxide, thus decreasing the neuropsychological deficit. HBO enhances the outcome even in the subacute phase of CO poisoning as in this case. Posttraumatic spinal cord cyst is a late sequelae of spinal cord injury. The cyst has no or little inf-luence on the patient’s neurological functions. We report three patients of spinal cord injury complica-ted with posttraumatic spinal cord cyst whose motor functions were compromized due to increased spasticity. The incidence of the cyst may be up to 50%. The cyst may come from liquefaction of the cord tissue after local edema, necrosis and hematoma, or a myelomalacia due to local ischemia. A case of delayed diagnosis of spinal dural arteriovenous fistula is presented. A 65-year-old male presented to our clinic for progressive stiffness and numbness over bilateral lower limbs for 6 months. Neurological examination was suggestive of thoracic spinal cord lesion with signs of both upper and lower motor neuron disorders. Electromyographic examination showed evidence of denervation and re-innervation in the bilateral paraspinal muscles of middle thoracic level. Scheuermann's disease is one of the common causes of structural abnormality in the thoracic or thoracolumbar spines. Many theories have been proposed for the etiologies of Scheuermann's disease, but the true etiology remains unclear. The disease has a strong familial tendency which may be inh-erited in an autosomal dominant mode. This article describes a 21-year-old male patient who was suff-ering from low back pain for 2 years. Objective. This study investigated whether and how faculty clinical practice (FCP) was being implemented in occupational therapy professional education programs.

Method. Chairpersons and faculty members from all accredited entry-level occupational therapy curricula in the United States were asked to complete questionnaires about their involvement in FCP. The chairperson questionnaire consisted of primarily closed-ended questions that addressed the organization of faculty practice within their programs, whereas the faculty questionnaire was primarily open-ended and addressed faculty members’ individual involvement in FCP as well as the perceived benefits and drawbacks. Ankylosing spondylitis is an inflammatory disease of the axial skeleton. Spinal ankylosis reduces vertebral flexibility, exacerbates osteoporotic change, and leads to a loss of the biomechanical function of the spine. Thus, even small impacts might cause vertebral fracture or damage of the spinal cord in the patients with ankylosing spondylitis.This retrospective study included 11 patients with ankylosing spondylitis who were admitted to a hos-pital between 1991 and 1999 for rehabilitative service after spinal cord injury. This article concerns the correlation between children with dyslexia and brain morphology. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies suggest that five major differences exist between dyslexic and typical children. Primarily, the genu of the corpus callosum is significant smaller in dyslexic children. Secondly, the corpus callosum in dyslexic children with family history is larger and thicker. Thirdly, dyslexics demonstrate more deviations from normal patterns of left and right hemisphere asymmetry. OBJECTIVE: This pilot study explored occupational therapists' perceptions of their roles as interventionists providing education and support for caregivers of persons with dementia. The intervention was provided in caregivers' homes as part of a larger funded study.

A survey of utilization and demand of Rehabilitation Information System (RIS) for out-patient clinic service was done by questionnaires from July 1999 to December 1999. One hundred and seventeen responses (52.0% of total samples) were adopted for analysis. The questionnaires included data base, utilization of rehabilitation information system for outpatient clinic service and demands of specific system . ”From January 1993 to June 1996, one hundred and fifty-four spinal cord injury (SCI) patients received urodynamic studies, including urosonography, radionuclide renography, voiding cystoureth-ragrphy, intravenous urography, and/or cystometry. Among the subjects, 125 patients were male (81.2%) and 29 were female (18.8%); there are 133 patients (86.4%) with upper motor neuron lesion and 21 (13.4%) with lower motor neuron lesion.One hundred and eleven patients (72.7%) had the history of symptomatic urinary tract infection, and urolithiasis was noted in 3 patients (1.9%). Intracranial teratomas arise in the midline, most comm-only in the pineal and suprasellar regions. Only one documented paper illustrated a teratoma arising in the brain stem. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare elderly non-fallers and fallers for differences in the following: (1) mean functional reach (FR), (2) mean anterior limits of stability (LOS), (3) mean posterior LOS, and (4) mean sensory organization test (SOT) composite score. The following correlations were tested for significance separately in the sample of non-fallers and the sample of fallers: (1) FR and anterior LOS, (2) FR and posterior LOS, (3) FR and SOT composite score, (4) anterior LOS and the SOT composite score, and (5) posterior LOS and the SOT composite score.

Articular cartilage is a highly compressive load-bearing tissue by virtue of the functional interplay between a 3-dimensional (3-D) structure of collagen fibrils and the entrapped water-swollen proteoglycan macromolecules. Any loss of interconnectivity in the collagen network that might reduce the constraints on the swelling tendency of the proteoglycan domain will lead to swelling and low matrix stiffness. In order to understand the prevalence of limitation in activities of daily living in elderly people and the relationship between limitation in activities of daily living and the cardiovascular risk factors among elderly people, we conducted a cross-sectional study in Chung-Shing-Shin-Tseun community of Taiwan in May 1998. All of individuals aged 65 and over were collected. A total of 1093 persons, out of a 1774 registered residents, finished questionnaires. The response rate was 61.6%. One hundred and thirty-four babies who were clinically diagnosed with postural wry neck were enrolled in this study. All of them received sonographic examination of both sternocleidomastoid muscles with a 7.5 MHz linear array transducer connected to the Acuson 128 10M ultrasonographic machine. Three (2.2%) of the 134 babies were noted to have echogenic changes in one of their sternocleidomastoid muscles, and were diagnosed as having muscular type torticollis.
