Hirayama disease is a rare disease with unique clinical manifestations. It was first reported by Japanese physician Keizo Hirayama, and tends to develop in young people in their teens and early twenties, predominantly in men. The lower cervical spinal anterior horn cells are usually involved, resulting in asymmetric muscular atrophy or weakness of distal upper extremity. The onset is insidious and gradual. It ends up in a stable status after years of progression. By now the mechanism is still unclear, and two hypotheses are discussed. Background: Vitamin B12 deficiency may be associated with variable neurological involvement, and myelopathy is the most common disorder associated with this deficiency. However, initial presentation with autonomic dysfunction is very rare.Case: The present report describes the case of a 76-year-old man who initially presented with recurrent syncope, followed by impaired vibration and proprioception, and then progressive weakness of the limbs. Result: The findings of a hematological study, blood biochemistry, gastric biopsy by panendoscopy, and electrophysiological examinations all supported the diagnosis of chronic atrophic gastritis-related vitamin B12 deficiency associated with macrocytic anemia, myelopathy, peripheral neuropathy, and autonomic dysfunction. Ultrasound imaging provides a unique and complete representation of tongue structure in almost all planes of interest and is rapid enough to record real-time tongue movement during speech. Recording tongue movement with ultrasound is non-invasive, and has not been shown to have any biologic effects in humans at diagnostic intensities. As a result, ultrasound has been widely used in speech studies to measure tongue functions in recent years. Papillary thyroid carcinoma is a type of well-differentiated thyroid cancer. This type of cancer is often diagnosed in patients found with palpable neck mass or lymph node enlargement. The clinical characteristics of papillary thyroid carcinoma are slow disease progression, less tendency for distant metastasis, and better prognosis than other types of thyroid cancer. The diagnosis of thyroid cancer is primarily based on the identification of pathological tissue obtained through echo-guide fine needle aspiration biopsy. Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of a new air cell cushion (Elaston cushion) made of gelatinous elastomers, a newly developed material with a novel structure on reducing pressure and temperature.Methods: We compared the pressure and thermal responses of the Elastone cushion to three other available cushions (foam, gel-filled and air-filled villous) and four regular wooden or spongy chair seats. The skin temperature at the buttocks was also continuously measured for eight-hours sitting. Objectives: To better understand the current utilization of rehabilitation services and to project future trends, this study investigated the primary reasons for rehabilitation services referrals in a medical center in Taiwan. Methods: We reviewarticleed records of those patients who visited rehabilitation clinics (4,305 new and 12,163 returned patients) or received a rehabilitation consultation during their hospital stay (1,345 patients) between June and October 2007 at the National Taiwan University Hospital. A 38-year-old man with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus complained of a mild painful swelling over the right posterior thigh that had been present for 3 days. He was initially diagnosed as having a right hamstring strain. After a 7-day treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, the symptoms progressed to a prominent painful swelling over the right posterior thigh. Leukocytosis and high inflammation indices were noted. A 30-year-old woman with a history of 9th to 11th thoracic vertebral compression fracture developed complete thoracic spinal cord injury immediately after percutaneous vertebroplasty. The patient did not have any sign of neurological recovery after two operations for spinal decompression. The postoperative chest X ray and thoracic computed tomography scan revealed diffuse asymptomatic pulmonary embolism, but the patient did not have dyspnea or chest pain.Percutaneous vertebroplasty has been generally considered a minimally invasive and effective procedure for treatment of painful compression fracture. Neuromyelitis optica is a rare demyelinating disease. Radicular pain as the initial presentation of monophasic neuromyelitis optica has not been previously reported. We present a case of monophasic neuromyelitis optica in a 69-year-old female who suffered 1 year (from 2004/6 to 2005/5) from back pain that radiated to the lower extremities. Fifth lumbar radiculopathy was the first diagnosis. Despite treatment with laser discectomy on 2005/2/15, her pain, lower extremity weakness, and bilateral visual acuity worsened. We report an unusual case of a 13-year-old boy with moyamoya disease whose predominant manifestation was right hemichorea with initial dystonic spasms of the right limbs and face. A diffusion-weighted MR image of the brain in the initial stage showed no infarcted or other parenchymal lesions. However, MR angiography and intracranial angiography showed stenosis of the bilateral internal carotid and middle cerebral artery with prominent basal collaterals, which was compatible with moyamoya disease. The prevalence of chronic disease in community-dwelling elderly has increased with the increase in the elderly population in Taiwan. This study investigated the effects of regular rehabilitation exercises provided by rehabilitation professionals in community-dwelling elderly people with osteoarthritis and stroke. A single group with pretest-posttest design was used in this pilot study. A 43-year-old woman was clinically diagnosed as carpal tunnel syndrome due to the presentation of intermittent numbness, tingling and pain in her right thumb and index finger. The symptoms gradually exacerbated together with positive Phalen's test and Tinel's sign. Endoscopic carpal tunnel release procedure failed to relieve her symptoms. Ensuing symptoms developed such as headache, extensive numbness and mild weakness in her right upper and lower limbs. MRI of brain revealed a left thalamic tumor. MS is a malignant solid tumor resulting from the extramedullary proliferation of myeloblasts or immature myeloid cells.It is often described in association with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The purpose of this study was to evaluate satisfaction levels between injured collegiate student-athletes, their athletic trainers, and the services they provide during rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries. A secondary purpose was to determine the effect demographics and patient variables have on patient satisfaction within athletic environments. Exactly 82 collegiate student athletes competing in NAIA and NCAA Division II athletics completed an online survey used to assess levels of patient satisfaction with athletic trainers and athletic training. The primary goal of a sports rehabilitation program is to return the injured athlete back to competition as quickly and as safely as possible. Sports physical therapists utilize a variety of exercise equipment to help an athlete restore function after an injury. An injured athlete’s therapeutic exercise program frequently includes the prescription of functional strengthening and power exercises during the later stages of rehabilitation. Background: The purposes of this study were to describe and analyze the steps/d of nonwhite minority children and youth by gender, grade level, race/ethnicity, and mode of school transportation. A secondary purpose was to compare the steps/d of minority children and youth to their Caucasian grade-level counterparts. Methods: Participants were 547 minority youth grades 5 to 8 from 4 urban schools. Participants wore sealed pedometers for 6 consecutive week/school days. A significant body of research exists that explores the stressors of raising a child with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). There are fewer studies, however, that examine specific effective coping strategies of mothers of children with an ASD. This qualitative study explored mothers’ perceptions of effective coping strategies for their parenting stressors. In-depth interviews were conducted with 11 mothers to inquire about their personal coping methods. Interviews were coded and emergent themes identified which included coping strategies such as “me time,” “planning,” “knowledge is power,” “sharing the load,” “lifting the restraints of labels,” and “recognizing the joys.” The information from …

The purpose of this research was to provide a data-based picture of the discipline of occupational science by identifying patterns of research in the first 5 years of presentations at the Society for the Study of Occupation: USA (SSO:USA). A grounded theory approach was used to examine 184 peer-reviewed presentation abstracts, from 2002 to 2006. Among the 108 data-based presentations, adults were the most studied group, with 46% of the data-based abstracts focused on participants with a disability or clear disadvantage.
