Health And Appearance Reasons For Weight Loss As Predictors Of Long-Term Weight Change, Joseph E. Mroz, Carol H. Pullen, Patricia A. Hageman
Health And Appearance Reasons For Weight Loss As Predictors Of Long-Term Weight Change, Joseph E. Mroz, Carol H. Pullen, Patricia A. Hageman
Journal Articles: Physical Therapy
This study investigated whether women's initial reasons (health, appearance to others, or appearance to self) for wanting to lose weight influenced their weight change over a 30-month web-based intervention. Multilevel modeling with 1416 observations revealed that only appearance in relation to one's self was a significant (negative) predictor. Women highly motivated to lose weight to improve their appearance in relation to themselves gained weight at 30 months, whereas those not motivated for this reason achieved clinically significant weight loss. Results suggest examining participants' initial reasons for weight loss as an important component of intervention failure or success.
Stress Less With Art Therapy, Delaney M. Rogers
Stress Less With Art Therapy, Delaney M. Rogers
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
According to the American Art Therapy Association, art therapy is "a mental health profession in which clients, facilitated by the art therapist, use art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem.” While creating art on your own at home is not the exact same as official art therapy, it has been shown that this form of art can help to decrease stress levels. For my Honors Capstone Project I have reviewed the research and studies …

Structured Dance Routines As An Effective Form Of Supplementary Treatment For The Symptoms Of Parkinson's Disease, Kate Bergin
Honors Program Theses
I chose to examine the effects of different styles of dance on individuals with Parkinson’s disease for of two reasons. The first being that I have a passion for dance. It has been a part of my life since I was five years old, and over the years it has brought me a lot of joy and allowed me to express my creativity. The second reason is that in the past I had heard that dance could be used as a form of therapy for various motor disorders, and I found that fascinating. I wanted to know which styles of …

Applying The Social Change Model Of Leadership To An Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctorate Program, Lorry Liotta-Kleinfeld, Debra Gibbs, Yvette Hachtel, Teresa Plummer
Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
Occupational therapy educators are tasked with preparing the future leaders in the profession. This responsibility requires a thoughtful and evidence based approach to reviewing and revising curricula to address changing professional and societal needs while aligning with a university’s mission and vision. While the need for occupational therapy leadership has been a topic of much discussion in the literature, little has been written about evidence-based curricular practices to develop and prepare students for leadership roles. This article demonstrates how one entry-level occupational therapy doctorate program incorporated the underpinnings of the Social Change Model of Leadership Development (Wagner, 2006) into the …

Clinician, Educator, And Student Perceptions Of Entry-Level Academic Degree Requirements In Occupational Therapy Education, Whitney M. Lucas Molitor, Ranelle Nissen
Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
Entry-level occupational therapy degree requirements have varied since the establishment of the profession. Currently multiple degree paths exist. There are cited benefits for a multiple degree path system; however, barriers also exist. Most notable among these are confusion among recipients of services and other health care providers. As other healthcare professional programs have transitioned to a single point of entry at the doctoral level, occupational therapy, until recently, had not yet made this change. A nationwide online survey was used to assess perceptions of the entry-level doctorate. Participants included current occupational therapy practitioners (clinicians or educators) and students in entry-level …

Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Programs’ Emphasis On Play: A Survey, Anita W. Mitchell, Jennifer Hale, Meg Lawrence, Erwin Murillo, Katie Newman, Hannah Smith
Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
Play is a key occupation for children. Despite this, research suggests that pediatric occupational therapists primarily use play as a modality rather than addressing it as an outcome. Lack of education related to play has been identified as a factor contributing to the limited use of play in intervention; therefore, this study examined entry-level occupational therapy programs’ emphasis on play in their curricula. Faculty from entry-level occupational therapy programs in all regions of the U.S. responded to a validated survey. The majority (82%, n = 33) reported meeting Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) standards related to play, notwithstanding …
