Background: Traditional methods for detecting positive blood cultures include the use of broth bottles with sensitive indicators for growth. These techniques can take 24-48 hours to signal a positive test. Another 24 hours are often required to determine the species of the organism. The use of rapid diagnostic testing for Candida species bloodstream infections provides accurate species identification in less than two hours.

Objective: Evaluate the time to appropriate antifungal therapy in patients in which rapid diagnostic testing was utilized.

College students report one of the highest rates of the nonmedical use of prescription stimulants (NPS). Research has shown that use is more common among students who have high levels of perceived stress, such as honors students. The purpose of this study was to determine whether honors students reported higher rates of NPS than their non-honors peers with high academic standing. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in men and women worldwide. Tobacco exposure represents the major risk factor. Nicotine, an addictive plant alkaloid found in tobacco, has been demonstrated to stimulate lung carcinoma cells directly via nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) that trigger downstream signals capable of promoting lung cancer growth and progression. PURPOSE: The use of multiple and/or inappropriate medications in seniors is a significant public health problem, and cancer treatment escalates its prevalence and complexity. Existing studies are limited by patient self-report and medical record extraction compared with a pharmacist-led comprehensive medication assessment.

PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively examined medication use in ambulatory senior adults with cancer to determine the prevalence of polypharmacy (PP) and potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) use and associated factors. PURPOSE: Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) are being investigated for brain cancer therapy because alternating magnetic field (AMF) activates them to produce hyperthermia. For central nervous system applications, brain entry of diagnostic and therapeutic agents is usually essential. We hypothesized that AMF-induced hyperthermia significantly increases IONP blood-brain barrier (BBB) association/uptake and flux.

METHODS: Cross-linked nanoassemblies loaded with IONPs (CNA-IONPs) and conventional citrate-coated IONPs (citrate-IONPs) were synthesized and characterized in house. CNA-IONP and citrate-IONP BBB cell association/uptake and flux were studied using two BBB Transwell® models (bEnd.3 and MDCKII cells) after conventional and AMF-induced hyperthermia exposure.

Periodontal disease is a common infection that damages gingival tissue and creates jawbone destruction that can lead to the loosening or loss of teeth. Hundreds of diverse bacterial species reside in the harsh environment of the oral cavity. The creation of plaque and biofilms serve to allow the bacteria to avoid immune-mediated destruction. OBJECTIVE:To present a case report and literature review of phenytoin-induced purple glove syndrome (PGS).CASE SUMMARY:A 54-year-old African American male presented to our hospital's emergency department (ED) following a seizure episode, cardiac arrest, and loss of consciousness. On arrival to the ED, the patient's total phenytoin level was subtherapeutic at 4.1 mcg/mL and his corrected total phenytoin level was subtherapeutic at 5.1 mcg/mL. In the ED, the patient received a loading dose of intravenous (IV) phenytoin 1,000 mg once via the left cephalic vein, at a rate of 50 mg/min, and was admitted to the medicine service. Background: To optimize patient outcomes, the patient-centred medical home model emphasizes comprehensive team-based care. Pharmacists are qualified to enhance appropriate medication use and help improve patient outcomes through provision of medication therapy management (MTM) services. To optimally provide MTM, pharmacists must effectively collaborate with physicians. This study explored factors that influence pharmacist-physician collaboration.

Methods and Findings: A convenience sample of five physicians participated in semi-structured interviews and the resulting data were analyzed using qualitative methods. Purpose: To review the current literature on the various extended-release methylphenidate stimulant preparations regarding safety and efficacy in children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Summary: The literature reviewed establishes the efficacy of the different long-acting methylphenidate stimulant formulations in treating children and adolescents with ADHD. Comparing and contrasting the different extended-release preparations allows for clinicians to help tailor ADHD treatments to individual patients. The extended release methylphenidate products provide the same efficacy as the immediate release formulations, but add the convenience of less frequent dosing. The objective of this work was to design, develop and evaluate erlotinib-loaded coreshell type lipid albumin hybrid nanoparticles (CSLAHNPs) for targeted drug delivery to nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Erlotinib (ETB) is a highly selective, potent and reversible inhibitor of epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase (EGFR) which is overexpressed (50-90%) in NSCLC. ETB is marketed as film coated tablets for oral delivery. However, poor survival rate along with life-threatening adverse effects were reported from oral administration. Over 4,000 flavonoids have been identified, and among these, many of them are known to possess cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antitumor effects. However, most of these properties have yet to be fully understood. In this study, extracts from Gnaphalium gracile, thought to possess a mixture of flavonoids, have been tested for cytotoxic activity on pancreatic (MiaPaca, Panc28), colon (HCT-116, Caco-2), and prostate (PC3, LNCaP), cancer cell lines. Therapies for B cell malignancies such as doxorubicin, have limitations due to dose related adverse effects such as neutropenia and cardiomyopathy. Indonesia has many kinds of plants which can be used as natural antioxidant sources. This study was focused on antioxidant activity of Cincau Perdu leaves extract (Premna oblongata Miq.) using 1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) methods. P. oblongata leaves was extracted using n-hexane, ethylacetate and methanol. It was found that methanol extract has the highest activity with IC50 value 20.01 μg/mL. The extract with highest antioxidant activity were fractionated with accelerated column chromatography and were earned 6 combination fractions. Palm oil contains carotenoid and vitamin E which possess antioxidant properties. A long exposure of heat and chemical substances during the purification process may lower antioxidant activity. This research was conducted to compare antioxidant activity of carotenoid and vitamin E obtained from each stage of three continuous purification process (transesterification, solvolytic micellization, and saponification). Total carotenoid concentration was analyzed by UV-visible spectrophotometer at λ 446 nm and total vitamin E concentration was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography, while ester and triglyceride concentration were analyzed by gas chromatography. Quinazolinone derivative compounds exhibit a broad spectrum of biological activity, including antioxidant. Quinazolinone derivative compound 4-[(E)-2-(4-oxo-3-phenyl quinazolin-2-yl)ethenyl]-benzensulfonamida and its analogs (2a-f) have been synthesized and demonstrated its activity as a selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2. The aim of this research was to evaluate the antioxidant activity of compound 4-[(E) -2-(4-oxo-3-fenilkuinazolin-2-yl)ethenyl]-benzensulfonamida and its analogs with DPPH radical scavenging method, ferric reducing activity potential (FRAP), and phosphomolybdenum method. Fruit and leaves of patikala (Etlingera elatior (Jack) R.M.Sm), is a traditional medicinal plants used by people to treat various diseases. The purpose of this study was to determine the total phenolic and flavonoid compounds of E. elatior fruits and leaves extracts. We extracted dried fruits and leaves samples by maceration method using methanol. Qualitative analysis of chemical compounds with certain eluent was done using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) to determine the group of active compounds in the extract. Hylocereus polyrhizus Britton and Rose (Red dragon fruit) has been shown to have antioxidant activity which contains vitamin C, polyphenol, and flavonoid. This research was aimed to investigate antioxidant activity from H. polyrhizus in form of lotion. Lotion were made with 5 concentration from H. polyrhizus methanol extract were 0.04, 0.08, 0.16, 0.32 and 0.64%. Lotion antioxidant activity was measured using DPPH method. The result showed that H. polyrhizus methanol extract had antioxidant activity with inhibition concentration were 19.99±0.33; 25.01±0.08; 39.14±0.04; 66.69±0.12 and 83.37±0.05. This study was conducted to observe the profile of DNA Adduct (8-OHdG) formation as DNA damage indicators, by using calf thymus DNA incubated with toxic and carcinogenic compounds. The compounds which could trigger free radicals in this research were PAH(Benzo[a]Pyrene), TiO2, and CuCl2. Calf thymus DNA was incubated with Benzo[a]Pyrene and CuCl2 compounds under pH and temperature variations. The incubation of calf thymus DNA with TiO2-UV radiation (254 nm) was used to induce the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the process of oxidative DNA damage. Eco-friendly synthesis of imine derivative compound from 2-hydroxy acetophenone and vanillin had been conducted by using a method of stirring (with stirrer) in a water solvent. The whole experiment began with the synthesis of imine compounds, followed by purification and characterization of the synthesis products and finally analysis on their biological and antioxidant activities. The experiments showed that imine compounds could be synthesized by a chemical reaction of 4-amino antipirin aqueous solution with 2-hydroxy acetophenone and vanillin at magnetic stirrer speed of 250 and 450 rpm, respectively, which produced product A, (E)-4-(1-(2-hydroxyphenyl) ethylideneamino)-1,5-dimethyl-2-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-3(2H) -one and product B, (E)-4-(4-hydroxy-3-(vinyloxy) benzylideneamino)-1,5-dimethyl-2-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-3(2H)-one. The RecG DNA helicase a key player in stalled replication fork rescue. The single-stranded DNA binding protein (SSB) participates in this process, but its role in the interaction of RecG with the fork remains unclear. We used atomic force microscopy (AFM) to visualize the interaction of RecG with a fork DNA in the presence of SSB. We discovered that SSB enhances RecG loading efficiency onto the DNA fork by threefold. Additionally, SSB interacts with RecG leading to the RecG remodeling. Objective. To implement and evaluate interactive web-based learning modules prior to advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs) on inpatient general medicine.

Design. Three clinical web-based learning modules were developed for use prior to APPEs in 4 health care systems. The aim of the interactive modules was to strengthen baseline clinical knowledge before the APPE to enable the application of learned material through the delivery of patient care.

Assessment. For the primary endpoint, postassessment scores increased overall and for each individual module compared to preassessment scores. Postassessment scores were similar among the health care systems. The survey demonstrated positive student perceptions of …
