Tibetan wild barley (Hordeum vulgare L. ssp. spontaneum), originated and grown in harsh enviroNment in Tibet, is well-known for its rich germpalsm with high tolerance to abiotic stresses. However, the genetic variation and genes involved in Al tolerance are not totally known for the wild barley. In this study, a genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) was performed by using four root parameters related with Al tolerance and 469 DArT markers on 7 chromosomes within or across 110 Tibetan wild accessions and 56 cultivated cultivars. Population structure and cluster analysis revealed that a wide genetic diversity was present in Tibetan wild barley. …

Evaluation Of Depression Screening Practices For College Women In A Primary Care University Health Clinic, Sarah E. Lester

DNP Projects

Mental disorders, including depression, are increasing in frequency and intensity in the college student population. College-aged women appear to be particularly vulnerable to depression. Primary care providers play an important role in addressing this issue, as they are the principal health care contacts for more than 50% of patients with mental illnesses. Guidelines from the 2009 United States Preventative Services Task Force recommend screening all adults (age 18+) for depression in primary care when depression care supports are in place. However, current screening rates for depression in the primary care setting from are estimated at only 1.6 to 3.3% (United …

Evaluating Discharge Readiness Of Patients At A Primary Stroke Center, Amanda Green

DNP Projects

The diagnosis of stroke is very prevalent in healthcare and it is estimated that someone in the United States suffers from a stroke every 40 seconds (Lloyd-Jones et al., 2009). In order to optimally prepare these patients for discharge and improve patient outcomes, it is important to understand the needs of the patient and caregiver and to meet these needs. In order to evaluate this, the focus of this project was to evaluate the discharge readiness of patients at a primary stroke center. “Discharge Needs of the Stroke Patient and Caregiver” focuses on a review of the literature in order …

Insights Into Readmission Rates Of Atrial Fibrillation Patients Referred To Bridge, Thomas Vasko

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Purpose and Background

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. and costs and estimated $6 to $26 billion annually largely due to hospitalizations. Bridging the Discharge Gap Effectively (BRIDGE) is an NP-driven transitional care program for cardiovascular patients. BRIDGE has demonstrated lower rates of readmission for patients with acute coronary syndrome who participated but not for atrial fibrillation (Afib) patients. We sought to assess differences between Afib patients who participated in the BRIDGE program and those who did not.

Conceptual Framework

The BRIDGE program is based on the Bumpus Integrated Client-Focused Transitional Care Model that posits …

The Art Of Clinical Supervision Program For Registered Nurses, Kylie P. Russell Jan 2013

The Art Of Clinical Supervision Program For Registered Nurses, Kylie P. Russell

Theses

Nursing students’ clinical placements should provide an environment in which they can apply their nursing education in the fast-paced world of health care and develop a framework for practice. Students rely on effective teaching and supportive clinical supervisors to provide a placement in which they are not only encouraged to practice, but also to learn from this practice. This is achieved through welcoming students into the health care team by valuing their input and contributions, and consolidating their clinical practice through activities such as critical thinking and reflection.

The role of the clinical supervisor is therefore complex and often constrained …

The Effects Of Markers For Hiv Disease Progression, Social Network, Barriers To Care, Depression, And Substance Abuse On Medical Appointment Adherence Of Hiv-Infected Adults, Yeow Chye Ng

All ETDs from UAB

The study was designed to test a causal model of theoretical relationships among markers for HIV disease progression, social network, barriers to care, depression, substance abuse, and medical appointment adherence among HIV-infected adults. The proposed causal model was derived and developed from Lazarus and Folkman's theory of stress, appraisal, and coping. The knowledge gained from this study may yield critical information with respect to determining how a health care provider or researcher can develop specific behavioral interventions for the improvement of medical appointment adherence among HIV-infected adults living in the Southeastern United States. The correlational study was a secondary analysis …
