Women of the poor community of Cien Fuegos, Dominican Republic often use folklore or self-treatment for symptoms of vaginitis. Based on assessment of women in Cien Fuegos, an education program was developed called Respect Yourself, Protect Yourself. The need to increase empowerment and self respect was clearly evident for the women of this community. The program focuses on issues of vaginal hygiene, vaginitis, sexually transmitted infections and women's rights and self-protection. To provide sustainable education, the module will be sent to Cien Fuegos and implemented by local health providers.

Stress reactions resulting from participation in simulation scenarios are seldom reported in the literature but are often informally discussed by simulation faculty seeking guidance to manage the occurrences. Although simulation faculty members often describe events where a single learner’s distress interrupted learning for all involved, no examples of policies to plan for this kind of occurrence are available in the simulation literature. This article offers suggested best practices for identifying and assisting students who exhibit uncontrolled stress in simulation and includes a sample policy for planning.

Contacted in response to an article written in Nursing Science Quarterly titled Experience Informs: Spanning Three Decades with the Neuman Systems Model. Specifically, the consult request was to share expertise on the transition to close an Associate Degree program and open a new generic four year baccalaureate nursing program. Prior to the October meeting in person, phone consultation with the Dean of Nursing took place on several occasions. The President and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs joined the conversation and analysis during the October meeting. I have been informed to expect additional invitations to consult/advise on their transition process and …

Program evaluation is a major focus for the intersection of clinical care and fiscal responsibility. Collection of data over the first year of existence for a new program showed that needs were met for this health system. This data can be used by others to anticipate and gauge productivity and utilization for end of life care in the perinatal arena. Continued data collection is ongoing and shows even further growth of the service.

Pregnant women diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) have an increased risk of developing postpartum Type Two Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Up to 60% of women with GDM subsequently develop T2DM (Kim et al., 2002). T2DM can lead to other serious comorbidities, which can decrease quality of life and life expectancy. There are interventions that can be used to decrease or prolong the development of T2DM. On average, mothers who breastfed their children developed T2DM ten years after mothers who did not breastfeed (Zieglar et al., 2012). Zieglar et al. (2012) also found a 40% long-term risk reduction of T2DM with …

Aim: To report an analysis of the concept of grief in mothers of children with addiction. Background. The concept of grief in this context is poorly understood and often synonymously used with concepts depression, loss and chronic sorrow. In the US, the core concept grief has been recently revised by both NANDA and the DSM-V in efforts to better understand and characterize the concept. The plethora of literature on grief worldwide often characterizes grief as a response to a death. Design. Concept analysis. Data sources. Search terms ‘parental grief’ and ‘substance abuse’ yielded 30 articles. A second review using terms …

A Safety Mnemonic For Pediatric Oncology Patients: Knowledge, Confidence And Skills Accuracy During Simulation, Luanne Linnard-Palmer, Barbara Ganley
Luanne Linnard-Palmer
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, surpassed only by heart disease [1]. Approximately 1.6 million Americans will receive treatment for a variety of cancers annually [2]. This increase in oncology nursing care opportunities highlights the need to ensure that nurses have the skills, knowledge, and tools that allow them to safely provide care. Because Undergraduate nursing education often does not provide in-depth coverage of the principles of safe oncology nursing care required for children or adults, this study addressed protocols used when caring for chemotherapy pediatric patients using a chemotherapy mnemonic. The purpose of …

Mary M. Lee
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to test the efficacy of a social support intervention with parents of children <13 years old newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus>(T1DM).
METHODS: For this randomized, controlled clinical trial, 10 parent mentors of children diagnosed with T1DM >or=1 year and 60 parent participants were recruited from 2 pediatric diabetes centers. Mentors were trained to provide social support (home visits and phone calls) for 12 months to families in the experimental arm (32 mothers). Control group parents (28 mothers) received the phone number of an experienced parent (not trained to give social support) to call as needed.
FINDINGS: Mothers in the experimental …

PURPOSE: To describe the experience of parent mentors providing a social support intervention to parents of children < 13 years old newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus.
METHODS: Qualitative descriptive interviews were conducted with 6 parent mentors (all mothers) who provided social support to 34 mothers and 19 fathers of children newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus over a 12-month period. The mentors were trained to provide informational, affirmational, and emotional social support through home visits, phone calls, and/or e-mail. Qualitative content analysis was used to identify themes guided by the Ireys social support framework.
FINDINGS: The parent mentors described support activities that could be categorized into the 3 …

OBJECTIVE: Maternal depression is linked to poor infant and child outcome. In 2001, the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration required all Healthy Start programs to incorporate maternal-depression screening as part of home visiting services. This article describes the implementation and results of depression screening by the Des Moines Healthy Start Project between 2002 and 2009. The study represents the first longitudinal assessment of the Healthy Start maternal-depression screening initiative. METHODS: The evaluation assessed staff compliance with a protocol for screening for depression among clients at regular intervals during the prenatal and postnatal periods until the client's child was two …
