Temporomandibular Joint Relations Of Bone And Lateral Pterygoid Muscle : A Computerized Tomography Study, Duane K. Yamashiro

This study utilized the imaging technique of computerized tomography (CT). Scans taken with a GE CT/N 8800 scanner of an adult cadaver and a 12-patient group were obtained through the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, TMJ Department, and Loma Linda University Medical Center, Department of Neuroradiology.

The lateral scout image and a lateral cephalogram of the cadaver were compared using six angular measurements for facial type from Ricketts' Cephalometric Analysis. The six measurements, Maxillary Depth, Facial Depth, Mandibular Arc, Mandibular Plane, Lower Face Height and Facial Axis, were found to be similar. The diagnosis and treatment of third molars has often been cited as a special problem to the orthodontist. If the prognosis of third molars could be determined, orthodontic treatment could progress on a more positive basis.

This study was designed to provide a method of deciding whether developing third molars will erupt or become impacted.

Records from 130 orthodontically treated cases of Dr. Fredsall⁸ were studied. Several factors were evaluated and measured using the patients' cephalometric radiographs.

Registered nurses in skilled nursing facilities were surveyed using the Six-Dimension Scale of Nursing Performance to determine: (1) how they rated the importance of specific nursing behaviors related to their role, (2) how they rated the frequency engaged in the same specific nursing behaviors related to their role, and (3) if there was a relationship between how they rated the specific nursing behaviors for importance and frequency. There were five subgroups of nursing behaviors: (a) leadership, (b) nursing process, (c) teaching and collaboration, (d) interpersonal relations and communication, and (e) professional development. Inhibition Of Growth Of Toxoplasma Gondii In Cultured Fibroblasts By Human Recombinant Gamma Interferon., E. R. Pfefferkorn, Paul M. Guyre

The growth of Toxoplasma gondii in cultured human fibroblasts was inhibited by recombinant human gamma interferon at concentrations of 8 to 16 U/ml. The interferon was titrated by observing a total inhibition of parasite plaque formation 7 days after infection. Inhibition of the growth of T. gondii in the early days after infection was measured by marked reductions in the incorporation of radioactive uracil, a precursor that can only be used by the parasites. This assay showed that when cells were pretreated with gamma interferon for 1 day and then infected, inhibition of T. gondii growth could be readily detected …

A cancer other than non-melanoma skin cancer will occur in one of every seven persons. Individuals with higher risks for cancer are those with increasing age, hereditary disorders, and a family history of cancer. Lifestyle, especially the use of tobacco and alcohol, diet, and perhaps behavioral patterns influence the risk. Less well understood but clearly pertinent risk factors include environmental and occupational exposures. The risk factors specific for breast cancer include a positive family history of breast cancer, history of mastopathy, age at first pregnancy greater than 35 years, early menarche with late menopause, and history of carcinoma of the …

We are reporting a case of acute myeloid leukemia in a child with pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade, with a review of the literature. Morphologic and cytochemical evidence was used to diagnose acute myeloid leukemia, and radiologic, electrocardiographic, echocardiographic, cytologic, and histologic evidence confirmed the diagnosis of tamponade and pericardial leukemic involvement. Pericardiotomy and pericardial window drainage successfully relieved the tamponade, and conventional chemotherapy was used to induce a remission.

Criteria for the diagnosis of pituitary carcinoma are subject to controversy. Some authors do not accept the demonstration of cellular anaplasia alone as sufficient to establish the diagnosis but require evidence of metastatic disease in order to label a pituitary tumor as malignant. However, pituitary tumors can metastasize even in the absence of anaplasia. The present case of Cushing's disease and pituitary carcinoma had no clinical evidence of metastases when first reported. Partial surgical removal of the tumor followed by irradiation resulted in clinical remission of the Cushing's syndrome, but two years later progressive uncontrollable recurrence of the disease ended …

Peritoneal Lavage Red Blood Cell And White Blood Cell Count: A Prospective Comparison Of Usefulness, Eugene Meyer, James C. Gruenberg

Prospectively, 637 patients with blunt or penetrating trauma to the lower chest or abdomen had quantitative peritoneal lavage red blood cell (RBC) and white blood cell (WBC) counts as part of their initial diagnostic evaluation. Statistically, the lavage RBC count (error rate: 6.8%) was a superior test to the lavage WBC count (error rate: 9.7%) (chi sq=9.2564, p=0.0024). See Appendix. When the lavage RBC and WBC tests agreed, the predictive value was high: 94% (46/49) when both were positive and 95% (521/549) when both were negative. Cancer of the breast and colon are well known to occur with high frequency in families with certain inherited cancer syndromes. These cancers also occur with increased frequency in families which do not have a recognizable genetic cancer syndrome. The fact of familial occurrence can be used to identify people with increased risk of cancer. In high-risk people methods for early detection can be developed which may reduce morbidity and mortality from these cancers, as has been done for certain inherited cancer syndromes.

External Beam Treatment Of Inoperable Non-Small Cell Carcinoma Of The Lung, H. Gunter Seydel

External beam radiation therapy for unresectable non-small cell carcinoma of the lung has produced significant survival in patients with disease limited to one hemithorax. New approaches to improve the results of radiation treatment of these patients include interstitial implantation, the use of hypoxic cell sensitizers, biologic response modifiers, as well as changes in the technique of radiation therapy. This includes the use of modern computerized tomographic scanning technology for better definition of tumor volume as well as the use of two fractions per day in the treatment of non-small cell carcinoma of the lung. Recent progress in our understanding of the immune system and the development of new techniques that permit the precise identification of lymphocytes have permitted a reexamination of lymphoid neoplasms. Most of the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas and lymphocytic leukemias have been characterized as T or B cell neoplasms and have been shown to possess features similar to those expressed by normal lymphoid cells at different stages of maturation. The development of effective chemotherapy and improved techniques of radiation therapy offer the possibility of managing soft tissue sarcomas so that surgery may need to be less radical than in the past and amputation can be avoided. The low rates of local-regional and systemic recurrence that have resulted from using innovative combinations of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and conservative surgery encouraged us to use preoperative intraarterial adriamycin (doxorubicin) with or without radiation therapy for three cases of soft tissue sarcomas of the lower extremities. The rationale for this therapy is also discussed.

For patients in whom unexplained elevations in SGOT and SGPT concentrations are found, determination of the serum iron level is recommended to screen for asymptomatic precirrhotic hemochromatosis. Care must be taken to differentiate between hereditary hemochromatosis and secondary iron accumulation due to liver disease.

The immunosuppressive properties of corticosteroids are well established and cause a depression of pulmonary defense mechanisms. We report the case of a patient treated with short-term corticosteroids for an exacerbation of chronic obstructive lung disease who developed a multiple organism pneumonia.

Recent technological advances in diagnostic ultrasound have resulted in the development of high-resolution, portable real-time scanners. In neurological ultrasound, these devices have been particularly useful for detecting intracranial hemorrhage in premature infants. Sonography is now being used during neurosurgical procedures to help in localizing masses for resection and biopsy, as well as in the placement of shunt catheters. The applications of neurosonology and our experience with intraoperative neurosonology are reported in this review.

Research has shown that women experience fluctuations in body weight (BW) due to water retention and/or other processes at various times in the menstrual cycle. The purpose of this study is to measure women repeatedly throughout the course of one menstrual cycle and

(1) to confirm whether significant fluctuations in weight occur at various times and

(2) to determine whether there are significant differences in the components of body composition by hydrostatic weighing which are related to any changes in BW.

Man's skin response to the mosquito bite exhibits great individual variability. The everyday immediate reaction consists o f a red, or erythematous wheal that lasts only one or two hours. Twenty to 24 hours after the mosquito bite, a delayed reaction of erythema, swelling, and itching may also occur. An individual may exhibit an immediate reaction, delayed reaction, both reactions, or neither reaction. Studies suggest that sensitization to mosquito saliva may be responsible for the inflammatory response. This hypothesis is supported by histologic studies which demonstrate striking infiltration of inflammatory cells at the site of mosquito bites. Severe local reactions …
