Gout: Current Considerations, Alexandria Fappiano, Wilson Crone

Gout is a treatable chronic inflammatory condition that can cause severe joint pain and disfigurement. Commonly, it affects the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint as a monoarticular process. It is typically caused by hyperuricemia and genetic mutations of the uricase gene. Gout is definitively diagnosed with the presence of negative birefringent needle-shaped crystals in the synovial fluid of the affected joint. Classically, seafood and alcohol are risk factors for developing gout. However, given current population trends, obesity is another major risk factor. While weight loss is the best conservative management, medications can also be used to manage gout. The treatment is …

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To review studies which support the hypothesis that allograft inflammatory factor-1 (AIF-1), a protein initially identified in chronically rejected cardiac allografts, may be involved in the pathogenesis of the progressive fibroproliferative vasculopathy which is a hallmark of systemic sclerosis (SSc).

Recent findings: Recent findings demonstrated elevated AIF-1 expression both in SSc affected tissues and peripheral blood mononuclear cells. A detailed immunohistopathologic study examined the tissue and cellular localization of the protein in affected SSc tissues and demonstrated its expression in the endothelium of dermal and pulmonary vessels, in the pulmonary parenchyma, and in relevant inflammatory cells including T …

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To review the clinical and laboratory features of twelve cases of nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy (NFD) studied at our institution and of 70 previously described cases in the literature.

Methods: Clinical evaluation and laboratory studies of twelve patients with NFD associated with chronic hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis for end-stage renal disease and a review of 23 previous publications describing 70 patients with this disease.

Results: Eleven patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis and one patient undergoing chronic peritoneal dialysis for end-stage renal failure developed a severe and progressive cutaneous fibrotic process with woody induration of legs, thighs, hands and forearms, and …

ABSTRACT

Introduction. The antitumor antibiotic mithramycin has also been shown to be a potent and effective inhibitor of fibrosis following glaucoma surgery. This DNA interacting drug displays high affinity binding to GC rich sequences in DNA, including those present in the promoter of the gene encoding the Α1 chain of type I collagen (COL1A1).

The use of culture media to support the development of preimplantation embryos to the blastocyst stage is often associated with detrimental effects on normal development. These effects have been uncovered largely by investigating the phenotypic abnormalities displayed by fetuses and newborns derived from cultured preimplantation embryos. Research to understand the impact of culture on the embryonic developmental programme has focused on embryo metabolism, gene expression and genomic imprinting. We have used differential display RT-PCR to examine culture influences on global transcript pools in bovine embryos.
