The primary objectives of this study were to determine: 1) the pathway of the superior alveolar nerves and their relation to the maxillary molar tooth buds in the fetal and neonatal specimens and in the child, and 2) whether nerve fibers entered any microscopically-observed tooth buds.

A Study Of Regeneration Of Peripheral Nerve In The Rat, James C. Jay

Due to improvements in fixation and embedding techniques a restudy of regenerating peripheral nerve was thought advisable in order to better understand and describe the processes which take place.

Femoral nerves of white Wistar rats were used. The lesions were made by either crushing or severing the nerve. After a period of regeneration, varying from 12 hours to six days, the wound was reopened and the injured portion fixed in situ with 1% osmium tetroxide. The tissues were then removed, dehydrated, embedded and sectioned. The sections were stained and studied with a modified RCA EMU2A electron microscope.

Effect Of Isocaloric Unsaturated Fats On Serum Cholesterol Of Patients Treated With Hypocholesterolemic Agents, Yvonne Marie Hatley

The effect of a high unsaturated-low saturated fat diet on serum cholesterol levels were studied. Subjects were clinic patients receiving the following hypocholesterolmeic agents: triparanol (MER-29), diildothyroacetic acid (Diac), dextrothyroxine (d-T₄) and 3-methoxy-16, alpha-methyl-1,3,5, (10)-estratriene-16 beta, 17 beta-diol (Manvene or Anvene).

Fifteen hypercholesterolemic patients, eleven of whom were diabetic, were placed on diets with prescribed amounts of unsaturated fat. The caloric distribution was 40 per cent carbohydrate, 20 per cent protein, and 40 per cent fat. The level of unsaturated fat was 70 per cent of the total fat.

As yet there is little agreement among health workers as to whether the practice of between-meal eating is harmful, beneficial, or indifferent in its influence on health. Studies which have been done heretofore on between-meal eating have been concerned with the effects on growth, appetite, daily nutrient intake, regularity, body metabolism, overweight, work efficiency, and dental caries. It appears that the possible physiological effects of between-meal eating have been only partially explored. The problem of this study was the effect of eating between meals on stomach emptying time.

Reflex autonomic changes occurring with the use of cardiovascular drugs may, as a side effect, increase cardiac work and oxygen demand. Improvement of coronary flow and/or a decrease in myocardial work load without increasing oxygen utilization are the desired effects of drugs used in the treatment of coronary insufficiency. The improvement of cardiac function is the purpose of drugs used in the treatment of heart failure. In either case the therapeutic effect may be accomplished through a direct myocardial effect and/or a decrease in cardiac pressure work load through extracardiac action. The Level Of Lactic Dehydrogenase Activity As An Indicator Of The Growth Of Influenza Virus In The Embryonate Egg, Richard Kelly, Donald Greiff

The relation, between time and the levels of lactic dehydrogenase activity of chorioallantoic fluids from embryonate eggs infected with the PR8 strain of influenza virus were determined quantitatively. The mean values, based on 10 determinations for each time interval, followed a sigmoid curve, with the greatest rates of change occurring between 48 and 72 hours after the inoculation of virus. The activities of the fluids from infected eggs at the 72nd hour or later were approximately 18 times higher than those from non-infected eggs. Human oxalated plasma stored at 4° C. until the prothrombin time is increased beyond 60 sec. is a reliable medium for assaying labile factor (factor V) because its response to added labile factor corresponds quantitatively to that of plasma from patients with congenital deficiency of this factor. Such an agreement is not obtained with plasma stored at 37°C. The stability of labile factor is closely associated with ionized calcium. The addition of thrombin to fresh oxalated plasma causes an apparent hyperactivity of labile factor, but this is completely removed by adsorption with Ca₃(PO)₂. Oxalated plasma when …

The growth of Rickettsia mooseri was accelerated and quantitatively increased in embryonate eggs containing tritium oxide at levels of 180, 90, and 45 mc./egg during the growth period. The eggs of a group containing 22.5 mc./egg showed only a slight increase in the rate of growth of organisms; the infections in the eggs of a group given 11.2 mc./egg did not differ significantly from those of the control group. On the other hand, growth of R. akari was inhibited in embryonate eggs containing tritium oxide at levels of 180, 90, and 45 mc./egg, and partially inhibited in groups containing 22.5 …

Since the isolation or reserpine by Bein et al (1) in 1952, there have been numerous investigations dealing with the pharmacological and physiological properties of this drug. A good proportion of this work has dealt with the effects of reserpine on the function of the sympatho-adrenal system. The present investigation has two primary objectives and is therefore divided into two chapters. The first chapter is concerned with a study of the effects of previous reserpine treatment on the responsiveness of the adrenal medulla to chemical stimulation and the reactivity of the cardiovascular system to this stimulation. It is well known that when the body is subjected to various stress conditions there is almost always a reflex release of certain neurohumoral substances in an attempt to compensate for these abnormal conditions. Acid-base changes, for example, are some of the most frequent occurring under these conditions. As mentioned throughout this thesis there is a direct correlation between acidosis end extreme hypotension or shock. The objective of these experiments was to investigate and determine the influence of acidosis on the cardiovascular response to the sympatho-adrenal hormones, arterenol and epinephrine, which are released in large amounts during shock. The Comparative Ultrastructure Of The Choroid Plexus In Certain Animal Species, Norman M. Case

Employing the electron microscope, the writer studied the ultra-structure of the choroid plexus of the lateral and the 4th ventricles of the brain in seven species of animals comparatively. No such extensive comparative investigation has been made before with this instrument. The animals represent, in the main, species which have served previously, both in physiological and light microscopical studies on this organ, and consist of several specimens each of the frog, the opossum, the hamster, the guinea pig, the rat, the rabbit and the dog.
