Although functional alterations in the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nerves are well documented in overt hypothyroidism, little is known about alterations of CNS in acute hypothyroidism. Sixteen patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma were studied when prepared for radioiodine scanning after stopping levothyroxine (LT 4 ) therapy for 6 weeks to determine whether acute hypothyroidism leads to alteration in brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs). Currently there are conflicting results regarding optic neuropathy in diabetes mellitus. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate optic neuropathy in diabetic patients. We studied visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in 20 diabetic patients (6 insulin dependent, 14 noninsulin dependent; 8 women, 12 men; mean age: 49.70± 18.22 years; mean duration of diabetes: 9.33 ± 5.75 years) and 20 age-, and sex-matched healthy subjects (7 women, 13 men; mean age: 52.40 ± 16.02 years) as a control group. Objective: To compare three different treatment protocols for Gardnerella va-ginalis with respect to cure rates and secondary vulvovaginal candidiasis. Methods: In this prospective randomised study, initially 2285 patients with symptoms of bacterial vaginosis were evaluated. Three hundred and seven of them in whom Gard-nerella vaginalis was recovered were eligible for the study. In this study, the blood flow velocity waveforms of the leiomyoma, uterine artery and myometrium with color doppler ultrasound were analyzed in patients with postoperative diagnosis of benign uterine leiomyomas and 15 healthy volunteers as a control group were enrolled into the study. The lowest RI and PI values obtained from uterine leiomyomas were 0.39 and 0.93. Mean RI and PI values obtained from uterine leiomyomas were 0.39 and 0.93. The purpose of this study is to examine the morphological effect which appears in acini and ductus of palatine glands in patients wearing total prostheses. Acini had considerably wide lumens due to de-generation and desquamation in secretory epithelial cells in those who wear prostheses during varying periods. In this study the effect of diphtheria toxin (DT) on nitric oxide (NO) production from RAW 264.7 murine macrophages was investigated. Griess reagent was used to determine NO production by measuring nitrite levels in the culture supernatants. Corynebacterium diphtheriae G12/6 strain-produced DT (Limes flocculation activity and immunodiffusion assays were positive) demonstrated a dose-dependent effect on RAW 264.7 macrophages to induce NO production. L-NAME, an L-arginine analogue, inhibited NO production from DT-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. In this study the age at menopause and factors influencing age at menopause were investigated by a questionnaire in 282 women. The mean age of menopause was found to be 45.3 years and ranged from 35 to 54. Positive relationships were found between age at menopause and marital satus, body mass index, gravidity, parity, age at menarche, menstruation and menstruation bleeding period. Whereas negative relationships were found between age at menopause and smoking, age at first birth, abortion status and oral contraceptive use.

The development of cerebral cortex neurons has been studied in different stages of pre- and postnatal periods of rats. In order to show the neuronal processes, the Golgi-Cox impregnation technique was used. The first neuronal process development was observed in the cranial and caudal poles of the cerebral cortex during the 15th prenatal day and continued spreading from the lateral regions and poles towards the dorsocentral regions of the hemispheres. We investigated limited joint mobility in 77 patients with type I diabetes mellitus. The patients were also assesed for neuropathy, retinopathy and pulmonary complications. The prevalence of limited joint mobility was 47%. Skin changes were present in 87% of patients with diabetes of more than 5 years' duration. No relationship was found between limited joint mobility and metabolic control, but there was a very strong correlation between limited joint mobility and other diabetic complications such as neuropathy, nephropathy and retinopathy. We did not find any differences in the pulmonary function tests of patients with and without limited joint mobility. We …

In industry increased mechanisation results in increased noise levels. Operation of textile machines carries a high risk of hearing loss. In this study the evaluation of textile worker's noise induced hearing loss was reviewed cross sectionally. The hearing of 260 textile workers exposed to noise levels between 85-95 dB(A) in carpet and cotton textile factories was assessed by means of air and bone conductance audiograms obtained. The subjects were grouped into five hearing categories according to hearing thresholds at 125 to 8000 Hz with Klockhoffs classification. Antiserum against ubiquitin was used to identify ubiquitin conjugates in 3T3- LI cells, and to investigate changes in the amount and distribution of these conjugates in cells subjected to stress. Stress was induced by incubation with canavanine, an amino acid analogue, and by exposure of cells to temperatures of 43°C (heat shock). Recombination may be an important mechanism for increasing variation in retroviral populations. Retroviral recombination has been demonstrated in tissue culture systems by artificially creating doubly infected cells. Evidence for retroviral recombination in vivo is indirect and is based principally on the identification of apparently mosaic human immunodeficiency virus type 1 genomes from phylogenetic analyses of viral sequences. Production of nitric oxide by macrophages is believed to be an important microbicidal mechanism for a variety of intracellular pathogens, including Toxoplasma gondii. Mice with a targeted disruption of the inducible nitric oxide synthase gene (iNOS) were infected orally with T. gondii tissue cysts. Time to death was prolonged compared with parental controls. Histologic analysis of tissue from infected mice showed scattered small foci of inflammation with parasites in various tissues of iNOS−/− mice, whereas tissue from the parental C57BL/6 mice had more extensive tissue inflammation with few visible parasites. The transporter associated with antigen presentation (TAP) complex shuttles cytosolic peptides into the exocytic compartment for association with nascent major histocompatibility complex class I molecules. Biochemical studies of murine and human TAP have established that substrate length and COOH-terminal residue identity are strong determinants of transport efficiency. However, the existence of these specificities in the intact cell and their influences on T cell responses have not been demonstrated. Stimulation of protein synthesis in response to insulin is concomitant with increased phosphorylation of initiation factors 4B and 4G and ribosomal protein S6 (Morley, S. J., and Traugh, J. A. (1993) Biochimie 75, 985-989) and is due at least in part to multipotential S6 kinase. When elongation factor 1 (EF-1) from rabbit reticulocytes was examined as substrate for multipotential S6 kinase, up to 1 mol/mol of phosphate was incorporated into the alpha, beta, and delta subunits. Neonatal neurobehavioral development was investigated in a sample of 20 hospitalized, prenatally cocaine-exposed preterm infants and 20 matched non-exposed controls. Prenatal cocaine exposure was related to reductions in attention performance that remained apparent at 36 wks conceptional age. There was no impact of prenatal cocaine exposure on the rate of change in attention proficiency. In utero alcohol exposure was associated with increased rates of age-related change in motor skill. Alcohol-related performance deficits were transient; alcohol-exposed infants reached an equivalent level of motor performance exhibited by the non-exposed infants by 36 wks conceptional age. Age-related changes in executive function were examined on a new task, the Shape School, in 70 preschool children (32-68 months old). The Shape School is a colorful storybook designed to examine inhibition and switching processes in young children. Results confirmed that task efficiency varied significantly with age, with older age groups outperforming younger groups. Furthermore, inhibition efficiency improved significantly between 3 to 4 years of age, whereas switching skills showed developmental improvement from 4 to 5 years of age. Ligation of B cell receptor (BCR) on BKS-2, an immature B cell lymphoma by anti-IgM antibodies (Ab) caused apoptosis. Here we report that signaling through B cell receptor in wild type BKS-2 cells down-regulated the expression of Egr-1, a zinc finger-containing transcription factor. A reduction in the level ofEgr-1 mRNA could be demonstrated as early as 30 min after the ligation of BCR on BKS-2 cells. Immunocytochemical and Western blot analysis revealed that the expression of EGR-1 protein was also inhibited by anti-IgM treatment. Four experiments examined effects of quinolinic acid-induced lesions of the anterior cingulate, posterior cingulate, and medial frontal cortices on tests of visual discrimination learning, using a new "touchscreen" testing method for rats. Anterior cingulate cortex lesions impaired acquisition of an 8-pair concurrent discrimination task, whereas posterior cingulate cortex lesions facilitated learning but selectively impaired the late stages of acquisition of a visuospatial conditional discrimination. Medial frontal cortex lesions selectively impaired reversal learning when stimuli were difficult to discriminate; lesions of anterior and posterior cingulate cortex had no effect. The purpose of this study was to determine the relative importance of the metabolic effects of insulin for diabetes prevention by administering insulin or an inactive insulin analog by daily subcutaneous injections to prediabetic mice. A recombinant monomeric human insulin analog, which does not bind to the insulin receptor as a consequence of an alteration of a single amino acid at position 25 of the B chain, was shown to be equally effective at diabetes prevention as was intact insulin. In contrast to native insulin, the insulin analog did not cause hypoglycemia after subcutaneous injection. The insulin analog, however, protected …
