In this study, we compared stroma, epithelium, glandular lumen, smooth muscle hyperplasia, inflammation and fibrous components in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) tissue between the group undergone surgery only and the group who had taken finasteride (5 alpha-reductase inhibitor) prior to surgical treatment. Prostate adenomas were obtained from both 12 patients administered finasteride for six months prior to surgical treatment and those of 11 patients undergone only surgical treatment. The histological evaluation were performed quantitatively by planimetry. The mean epithelium ratio in the group administered 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor prior to surgery lessened approximately twofold compared to the other group's. In conclusion, …

Benchekroun hydraulic ileal valve and hipple valve techniques are widely used continent valve systems in recontructive urology, We compared continence, catheterizability and complications of the nipple and Benchekroun hydraulic ileal valve ruling out the inherent error of comparing different reservoirs under different conditions. A pouch was constructed with two methods present side by side. Comparable data from each valve were statistically evaluated through Mann-Whitney U test. Nonpalpable breast lesions are being detected with the advent of improved mammographic techniques. Although only 20-30 % of these lesions are malignant, definitive diagnosis has usually required a needle- localization breast biopsy during a 6 year period were reviewed to determine the effect of this procedure on the diagnosis and treatment of early breast cancer. Calcifications were the most common mammographic abnormality for biopsy. Of the 62(27%) patients diagnosed with malignancy, 38 (61%) had invasive carcinoma and 24 (39%) had noninvasive carcinoma. The merits of prophylactic oophorectomy at the time of hysterectomy have been debated for many years. The most compelling argument for prophylactic removal of the ovaries has always been the prevention of ovarian cancer (2). Prophylactic oophorectomy has advantages and disadvantages. The actual incidence of cancer in retained ovaries is difficult to estimate. The advantages of prophylactic oophorectomy include the prevention of ovarian cancer, the alleviation of symptoms from residual ovary syndrome and the elimination of the need for reoperation for adnexal disease (2). Imipenem, a very potent carbapenem derivative beta-lactam antibiotic, has recently found a major place in the treatment of antibiotic-resistant nosocomial infections. However, a convulsive side effect is seen in 0.2-3 percent of patients. Although it is suggested that this effect is due to the inhibition of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) mediated inhibitory transmission, no study has been reported so far showing its effect on the cerebral cortex free inhibitory and excitatory amino acid levels. Midline sternal foramina are uncommon anomalies. Because of this, it is possible to mistakenly identify such a defect as defect as a gunshot wound or sternal disease by CT. In this study the frequency of midline sternal foramina in Turkish adults is investigated by high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and visual inspection of sternal bones.

In the present study a total of 44 dry skulls and 500 skull films from the Sivas region of Turkey were examined to determine whether or not the interparietal bone was present. The incidence of interparietal bones was found to be 2.8 percent (15/544).

In this study, we investigated first; the possible involvement of nitric oxide and antioxidant enzyme level in the pathogenesis of essential hypertension and second we investigated serum nitrite-nitrate and antioxidant enzyme activities and lipid profiles (total, HDL and LDL cholesterol, trygliceride) to determine the relationship between these parameters in atherosclerosis. 13 patients with coronary heart disease, 18 patients with essential hypertension and 16 age-matched health subjects were taken into this study. Ascites, being an accumulation of excess fluid within the peritoneal cavity, is most frequently encountered in patients with cirrhosis or certain other diseases such as congestive cardiac failure, peritoneal tuberculosis and some primary or secondary peritoneal tumours. The intercistronic gene junctions of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) contain conserved sequence elements that are important for polyadenylation and transcription termination of upstream transcript as well as reinitiation of transcription of downstream transcript. To examine the role of the putative polyadenylation signal 3' AUACU75' at the gene junctions in polyadenylation and transcription termination, we constructed plasmids encoding antigenomic minireplicons containing one or two transcription units. The production and detection of a mannoprotein adhesin (MPA) of the hyphal-form cells of C. albicans on plastic petri dishes was investigated. Using Concanavalin A-coated latex microspheres, the MPA was detected on the plastic surface on which C. albicans produced germ tubes. The adhesin was extracted using dithiothreitol and iodoacetamide. It did not inhibit the adhesion of the yeast-form C. albicans to buccal epithelial cells (BEC). This suggested that the MPA of the hyphal-form cells on the plastic was different from that on the yeast cells responsible for attachment to the BECs.

Hypervolemia is supposed to be the principal factor in hypertension in chronic hemodialysis adults. In this study, the role of intensive ultrafiltration (UF) treatment to reduce hypertension due to hypervolemia in hemodialysis children was investigated. The inferior vena cava (IVC) was also evaluated as an index of UF therapy. Twenty-three hemodialysis children with the mean age 10.6±3.1 years were classified due to their blood pressure status. Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) may present in various clinical forms, either sporadic or a counterpart of hereditary endocrine disorders. The appropriate surgical procedure for MTC is total thyroidectomy combined with central neck clearance. The aim of this study was to document the initial clinical presentation, surgical treatment and clinical course of MTC in 27 patients. Thirteen (48.1%) cases were diagnosed as hereditary, either MEN 2a(7/27, 25.9%) or 2b syndrome (1/27, 3.7%) or familial non-MEN MTC (5/27, 18.5%), and fourteen cases were diagnosed as sporadic. Endogenous leukotrienes (LT) levels in plasma and urine samples, and LT levels released from stimulated leukocytes in vitro were examined in children with steroid sensitive nephrotic syndrome (SSNS). Plasma LT concentrations were found to be higher in the SSNS group than in healthy subjects. Subjects with SSNS were also shown to have high levels of urinary cysteinyl-LTs and LTB 4 , while healthy children had only urinary LTE 4 levels. Venous thrombosis is a serious health problem affecting 1 in 1000 individuals annually. Until recently the pathogenic factors underlying thrombosis were associated with genetic defects in protein C, protein S and antithrombin III. However these were recognised in fewer than 5-10% of thrombotic patients. A breakthrough was made with the discovery of activated protein C resistance (APCr) which is associated in 90% of cases v/herein a G-->A transition in the factor V gene results in an abnormal molecule, Factor V Leiden. The aim of this research was to perform exclusion on a rare form of hereditary autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). To-date, two genes for ADPKD have been identified: PKDI which has been localized to the short arm of chromosome 16 and PKD2 which has been localized to the long arm of chromosome 4. However, a small number of families have been reported that have not shown linkage to either of these two loci, thus suggesting the existence of at least one additional locus (PKD3). It is accepted that administration of hyperosmolar solutions (glucose 30%) prevent stress-induced ulcers in the rats; but their mechanisms of action are not elucidated. In this study, we have investigated whether glucose is absorbed or not through the gastric wall. C14 labelled glucose solution of 30% was given to groups A (n=6), and B (n=8) and physiologic serum to group C(n=7). Restriction of movement with cold application was performed in group B and C. The aim of this study is to investigate the frequency of chromosomal abnormalities in men with severe andrological infertility, In 50 men with azoospermia and severe oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (OAT), who referred for our intracytoplasmic sperm injection program, a cytogenetic study has been prospectively carried out. Peripheral blood lymphocytes were cultured for chromosomal analysis and for each proband 30 metaphases were analyzed by GTG banding technique. Major chromosomal abnormalities were detected in 4 of cases (8%). There were 3 sex-chromosome abnormalities, 46XXY in all 3 cases, and one autosomal chromosomal abnormality 46 XY, t (1;7) (P32;Q32).
