The lack of a rapid and reliable method for diagnosis of active tuberculosis necessitated the development of new laboratory techniques. Diagnostic value of a re-cently developed ELISA for the detection of lgA antibodies to Kp 90 antigen of Mycobacterium tuberculosis was evaluated in this study and the results were compared with the conventional methods and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Fifty six sera and body fluid (pleural, peritoneal, pericardial) samples from 23 patients with ac-tive tuberculosis and 26 control subjects were included in the study. In this study, serum and fingernali Cu and Mg levels of 10 children with acute Iymphoblastic leukemia and 12 healthy children were determined. Copper and magnesium levels of the sera and supernatants were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. (Perkin-Elmer 400). Fingernail Cu and Mg levels of the patients were 8.67 ± 5.35 and 0.22 ± 0.12 µmol/mg of nail respectively. The values for control subjects were 4.27 ± 2.32 and 0.14 ± 0.03 µmol/mg of nail. Four psychoactive drugs were studied using various in vivo nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. Trifluoperazine (TFP) was given to several normal rats, whose brains were then studied using in vivo fluorine-19 NMR. Three peaks were detected in the in vivo fluorine spectra: one at -62 ppm, which was due to TFP, and two others at -55 and -75 ppm, which are due to unknown metabolites of TFP. This study was carried out in the Ankara Rehabilitation Centre over an eight month period. A total of 428 urine samples was collected from inpatients with long-term catheterization for diagnosis of bacteriuria. Urinary tract infection was detected in three hundreds and thirty-one samples. Escherichia coli was found to be the highest causative agent. Moreover in forty of these samples Providencia spp were determined as the fifth highest causative agent. This Providencia spp finding is important as it is the highest recorded in Turkey. In this study, a new technique developed by us, called the "pad glove method" was used to measure sweat intensity in the palms of 15 patients with palmoplantar hyperhidrosis, and of 15 control subjects. Quantitative results in the hyperhidrosis group 2.1861±0.0836 grams/hour for the right hand and 2.2478±0.0961 grams/hour for the left hand, while in the control group were 0.3278±0.0419 grams/hour and 0.371±0.0501 grams/hours, respectively. The importance of bone marrow biopsy in Hudgkin's Disase is well known. The incidence of bone marrow involvement in Hudgkin's Disase varies from 2% to 29%. The presence of myelofibrosis is not sufficent evidence for a definitive diagnosis of bone marrow involment. Patients having myelofibrosis as a first symptom without pripherallympadenopathy must be distinguished from patients with idiopathic myelofibrosis. In this study, we examined the frequency of bone marrow involvement and the degree of myelofibrosis in Hudgkin's Disase. The characteristics of blood flow patterns detected by transvaginal pulsed and color Doppler ultrasonography were evoluated in ectopic pregnanacies. Two hundred and fifteen patients with surgically and histopathologically confirmed ectopic preg-nancies were included in this study. Of 215 patients, 113 (52.5 %) had an ectopic trophoblastic flow. 106 of them (93.8 %)showed a typical trophoblastic flow characterized by a high-velocity and low-impedance flow, whereas 7 (6.2 %) had bizarre blood waveforms including high-impedance and reversed diastolic flow. Its detection in the circulation has been shown to be a sensitive and specific marker for myocardial cell damage. We examined the effect of global cerebral ischemia (Two vessel occlusion plus systemic hypotension method) for 15 minutes on the hippocampal CA1 and CA3 neurones in rats, and compared with turn prefence scores. 14 of 27 animals were ambidexter while 9 had left and 4 had right turn preference. The left turns were significantly different from rights (t:2,26 df:26 p:0,032). Male rats prefered 62,73% and females 56,88% left turns. Diethylstilbestrol (DES), nonsteroid in structure, is an artificial estrogen derivative and is used as an anabolic agent. It is known that diethylstilbestrol causes genetic disorders and toxic effects leading up to carcinoma even in amounts below its residual levels. For this purpose, a dose of 60µm/kg/day of DES dissolved in 0,1 ml corn oil has been administered to rats by oral gavage for varying periods of 20, 50 and 100 days periods. Raw milk samples obtained from the Foundation of Milk Industry, three private dairy companies and individual dairy farms in Sivas, were tested for the presence of Listeria species. A total of 100 raw milk samples were analysed by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and two-stage enrichment techniques. Two-stage enrichment procedure was found to be more effective than FDA method in isolating Listeria species from raw milk. The overall incidence of Listeria species in raw milk was 6%. In this study we have showed that zinc ion has an inhibitory activity on imipenem and meropenem suspectibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. When zinc ion concentration of Mueller-Hinthon agar (MHA) media was gradually increased the zone diameters of imipenem and meropenem gradually decreased. So we concluded that zinc concentration in the media might effect imipenem and meropenem susceptibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and might indicate false resistance to imipenem and meropenem. Therefore the use of these antipseudomonal antibiotics in Pseudomonas infections may be restricted.

Five iridoid glucosides aucubin (I), bartsioside (II), melampyroside (III), mussaenoside (IV) and gardoside meathyl ester (V) as well as the lignan glucoside dehydrodiconiferyl alcohol-4- 0-\beta-D-glucoside (VI) were isolated from the overground parts of Bellardia trixago.The structure elucidation of the isolated compounds (I-VI) was realized on the basis of spectral evidence (UV, IR, 1 H and 13 C NMR) and the results were confirmed by comparison of the isolated compounds with authentic samples on TLC.

Variations of the limiting and internal sulci of the human cuneus was studied using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on 209 healthy individuals and the sulcal pattern of the right hemispheres of both sexes were evaluated. The internal sulci were divided into supreme, superior, middle and inferior sulci. Sulci were classified according to their localizations, courses, and terminations. Cuneus angle was measured and found as 68.84±9.74° and no sex differences was found for this angle.

In this study, the in vitro effects of some antibiotics on carbonic anhydrase (CA) isozymes have been investigated. Human erythrocyte CA-I and CA-II isozymes were separately purified by affinity chromatography. Inhibition effects of four different antibiotics on CA isozymes were determined by using the CO 2 -Hydratase method. I 50 values of antibiotics were obtained by drawing % Activity [Actibiotic] graphs. The obtained I 50 values of cefazolin sodium, cephradine, sulbactam/cefoperazone and chloramphenicol sodium succinate were 9, 16, 19 and 48 mM on CA-I and 6, 10, 15 and 17 mM on CA-II, respectively. In this studry 32 hyperglycemic patients with type II DM were treated with diet (7 patients), with gliclazide, an oral antidiabetic agent (10 patients), or with insulin (15 patients). The levels of liporoteins, apolipoprotein A and B and LCAT enzyme are measured before the therapy and 3 weeks after the achievement of glycemic control. Diabetic patients show hemobiological abnormalities such as increased platelet adhesiveness, platelet hyperaggregability, decreased platelet half life, hemorheological abnormalities and altered fibrinolysis, perhaps contributing to a procoagulative state. Gliclazide, a novel sulfonylurea in routine clinical use, was thought to have effects on prostanoid release and platelet function. We studied thromboxane A 2 metabolite; serum thomboxane B 2 (TXB 2 ) and the prostacyclin metabolite, 6-keto-PGF 1\alpha to assess the efficacy of gliclazide on these parameters.
