This study was designed to determine the prevalence of osteopathy in diabetic patients, who are at risk of developing osteopathy, and clarify the relationship between osteopathy and other complications of diabetes mellitus. Thirty-four type I and 66 type II diabetic patients admitted to the endocrinology clinic between 1996 and 1997 and 30 nondiabetic subjects as a control group were studied. Bone scintigraphy (Tc 99m methylene diphosphonate) was used for the diagnosis of osteopathy. The body mass index (BMI) of each patient was calculated. Fine Structural Demonstration Of Anionic Sites On Streptococcal And Staphylococcal Envelopes By Cationic Dyes, Yosun Mater, Sabi̇re Karaçali

Anionic sites on bacterial envelopes of Streptococcus \beta-haemolyticus and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 P were investigated on materials fixed with Karnovsky fixative containing the cationic dyes ruthenium red (RR) or alcian blue (AB). Electron dense granules and short fibrils were found to be irregularly distributed around the cells on the glycocalyces of both genera. An electron dense stained reaction with RR or AB on the cell membrane and glycocalyx indicates the presence of rich anionic sites on these structures. Electron microscopic observations demonstrate that anionic sites in the glycocalyx are responsible for the adherence phenomenon during the formation of microcolonies. …

The aim of this study was to investigate the systemic humoral and cell-mediated immune system parameters, and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) immunoreactivity in non-convulsive absence epilepsy and pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)- induced generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Animals were divided into three groups: i. the control group, ii. the genetic absence epilepsy WAG/Rij group, and iii. the chronic generalized tonic-clonic convulsion group injected with PTZ. Carnitine is a major molecule which plays a great role in the transfer of long chain fatty acids into the mitochondrion. Measurement of its total and free forms is essential in the clinical evaluation of carnitine deficiency that can arise from disorders either primarily or secondarily. The effect of cigarette smoking on the fractal organisation of the heartbeat regulating system was investigated by power spectral analysis. The heart rate variability (HRV) signal was obtained from the consecutive RR intervals of ECG. Power law behaviour of 1/f\beta type was studied to assess the fractal organisation of the heartbeat. The microbiologic lid flora evaluations of 117 patients with anterior blepharitis were compared with those of 52 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. The sampled bacterial cultures were identified according to standard conventional techniques and fatty acid profiles by the Microbial Identification System (MIS). Chi-square and difference between two percentage Z tests were used for the statistical analyses. This prospective randomized clinical study was designed to assess and compare the effects of normothermic and hypothermic nonpulsative cardiopulmonary bypass in patients with mitral valve replacement. Forty patients undergoing elective mitral valve replacement were randomly divided into two groups according to the temperature of perfusion. Group N (15 patients) underwent normothermic cardiopulmonary perfusion and Group H (25 patients) underwent hypothermic cardiopulmonary perfusion. Carbonic anhydrase is the basic enzyme in inhalation function. Untill now no research had been done to determine whether CA is in the human erythrocyte plasma membrane or not. Carbonic anhydrase (CA) was purified from human erythrocyte plasma membrane and described in this study. For this purpose, the blood samples taken from young human test subjects were hemolyzed, then the membrane fraction was separated, and this fraction was repeatedly washed. QSAR analysis of some 5- or 6-methyl-2-substituted benzoxazoles/ benzimidazoles was studied for the antifungal activity against C. albicans using Hansch analysis. Prediction for the lead optimization in this QSAR analysis was described by the description of various hydrophobic, electronic, steric and structural parameters related to positions R_1, R_2, R_5, R_6, X, Y. The cross-validation method was also applied to the data set in order to prove the predictive power by using the BILIN statistical software. Nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) are chromosomal segments in which ribosomal RNA is encoded. The AgNOR technique, which reveals these regions, has rarely been used in diagnosis and preceding the prognosis of pituitary adenoma. Increased mean airway pressure (Paw) predisposes to increased alveolar dead space volume and, hence, physiologic dead space volume (V{Dphys}. This is the result of overdistending alveoli, converting Zone 2 and Zone 3 units to Zone 1 units. Lung carbon dioxide elimination (LCO_2) is a reflection of pulmonary capillary blood flow. It is hypothesized that as Zone 1 units form or V{Dphys} increases, LCO_2 decreases proportionately and eventually PaCO_2 increases. We investigated whether rCBF values obtained with the SPECT technique are different in schizophrenics with predominantly positive or negative symptoms and assessed the biological underpinnings of psychotic phenomena, which has been done repeatedly in the past, with somewhat varied results. Twenty-nine schizophrenic patients were examined to investigate the relationship between regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and psychopathology according to SANS, SAPS and BPRS scores. This study was conducted in an endemic goitre area to determine thyroid profiles TSH, freeT4 (fT4), T4, fT3 and T3, as well as the degree of the severity of hypothyroidism and the prevalence of the disease. Tonbak is a small village in Kahramanmaraş. The iodine content of the water is < 1 mg/L. A randomly selected group of 121 subjects aged 16-55 were included in the study. The percentage of goitre was 71.1% upon physical examination. Subjects with primary hypothyroidism were 16.5%. Biofilms are complex communities of microorganisms attached to surfaces or associated with interfaces. Despite the focus of modern microbiology research on pure culture, planktonic (free-swimming) bacteria, it is now widely recognized that most bacteria found in natural, clinical, and industrial settings persist in association with surfaces. Furthermore, these microbial communities are often composed of multiple species that interact with each other and their environment. The determination of biofilm architecture, particularly the spatial arrangement of microcolonies (clusters of cells) relative to one another, has profound implications for the function of these complex communities. Glucocorticoids (GCs) inhibit bone formation in vivo and inhibit osteoblast proliferation and collagen synthesis in vitro. These effects may be mediated by alterations in the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system. In the present study of normal human osteoblast-like (HOB) cells, we tested the hypothesis that dexamethasone (Dex) inhibits the expression of IGF binding protein-5 (IGFBP-5). Dex decreased IGFBP-5 mRNA levels to 54% of control after 4 hr. Dex did not modify the decay of IGFBP-5 mRNA in transcriptionally arrested osteoblast cells. Dex decreased IGFBP-5 hnRNA levels to 67% of control after 2 hr, and the activity of the human IGFBP- …

Progenics's rCD4-IgG2 (PRO-542) is a recombinant fusion protein, which has been developed using the company's Universal Antiviral Binding (UnAB) technology, and is in phase I/II clinical trials for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type I (HIV-1) infection [273391]. At the beginning of 1997, Progenics received a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR) grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious diseases (NIAID) to fund the development of PRO-542 [236048]. We have observed previously that attachment of Toxoplasma gondii to synchronized host cells is considerably increased at the mid-S phase (4 h postrelease). Synchronized CHO host cells at the mid-S phase were fractionated by molecular weight, and the antigens were used to produce a panel of polyclonal mouse antisera. The polyclonal antisera raised against fraction 4 with molecular mass ranging approximately from 18 to 40 kDa significantly reduced attachment to mid-S-phase host cells. Immunofluorescence assays demonstrated strong reactivity to mid-S-phase host cells and identified a number of potential receptors on Western blots. These data indicate that there is a specific …
