Background and Aim: The pathogenesis of brain damage in ischemic stroke is highly complex. The aim of the present study was to investigate the presence of oxidative stress in ischemic stroke and to determine whether the measured oxidative stress markers in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were associated with infarction volume, and the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS). Aim: To develop a sensitive automated colorimetric urine copper determination method using a water soluble compound, 2-(5-nitro-2-pyridylazo)-5-(N-propyl-N-sulfopropylamino) phenol (nitro-PAPS), as a ligand. Materials and Methods: The new photometric method using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-ascorbic acid to dissociate copper from proteins in acetate buffer (pH 3.2) and nitro-PAPS as ligand was also adapted to an automated analyzer. Background and Aim: Adhesion formation following abdominal wall hernia repair with prosthetic mesh may lead to intestinal obstruction and enterocutaneous fistulae. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of fibrin glue (FG) and omentoplasty in the prevention of adhesion formation in a polypropylene mesh (PPM) abdominal wall replacement model. Background: Ogilvie's syndrome is characterized by acute, massive colonic dilatation, without any mechanical obstruction. Methods: The records of 15 patients with Ogilvie's syndrome were retrospectively reviewed with respect to gender, age, associated problems, symptom duration, symptoms, signs, treatment, morbidity, mortality, and recurrence. Results: Mean age of the patients (8 male, 7 female) was 49.9 years (range: 32-76 years). Among them, 5 had medical problems, while 4 patients had had abdominal surgery, and 2 patients had burns. The 3-dimensional alignment of the carpal bones should be intact to ensure functional integrity of the hand. The treatment of fractures of the carpal bones is challenging and may differ according to localization. A patient with closed carpal injury and his treatment are presented in this report. After his wrist was crushed between a smooth hammer and a workbench during an occupational accident, the patient had multiple carpal bone fractures and remarkable swelling. The type of the injury was regarded to be a sort of capitate-hamate diastasis, although it did not correspond to any type that had been previously described. …

Aim: The purpose of this study was to measure serum prolidase activity and interleukin-2 and 6 (IL-2, IL-6) levels and to investigate the relationship of these parameters with bone mineral density (BMD) and bone turnover markers in postmenopausal women with and without osteoporosis. Materials and Methods: 59 postmenopausal women were included in this study (21 women with osteoporosis and 38 without). Serum IL-2 and IL-6 levels, prolidase activity, osteocalcin (OSC), calcium (Ca), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), urinary deoxypyridinoline (DPD) and BMD were measured in postmenopausal women with and without osteoporosis. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate possible effects of cooking techniques on antioxidant enzyme activities in broccoli, tomato, red cabbage, parsley, carrot, green pepper, lemon, onion, and garlic, which are consumed frequently in our daily diet. Materials and Methods: Superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and catalase (CAT) activities were measured in fresh and thermally treated (boiling, microwaving and baking) fruits and vegetables. Aim: Split hand-split foot malformation (SHFM) results from central ray reduction and presents as median clefts of the hands and feet, syndactyly, aplasia or hypoplasia of the phalanges, metacarpals and metatarsals, which are frequently associated with other phenotypic abnormalities. We aimed to investigate the genetic pathway of SHFM in a child. Materials and methods: Cytogenetic and molecular genetic analysis was performed in a 10-day-old boy with split-syndactyly hand and flat-syndactyly foot. Results: We found a complex chromosomal rearrangement including breaks in 4q12, fragility in the 9q11-13 band region and 9qh+. Cytogenetic results agree with the literature findings. Giant hydronephrosis (GH) is a rare entity that may mimic progressive and benign abdominal cystic tumors. Despite the increase in the use of prenatal ultrasound, GH may still be seen in the adult population. We report a case of GH in a 19-year-old female who presented with a progressive abdominal distention and other gastrointestinal symptoms. Diagnostic and therapeutic features of this rare case are discussed in light of the current literature.

Inflammatory fibroid polyps are uncommon gastrointestinal tract lesions. The stomach and ileum are the most commonly affected sites. Clinical symptoms depend on the location and size of the lesion. Obstruction or intussusception is the most frequent initial symptom when an inflammatory fibroid polyp is located in the small intestine. We describe two cases of inflammatory fibroid polyps of the small intestine causing ileocecal and ileoileal intussusception.

Aim: The aim of this investigation was to measure the amount of g-decay of several building materials (brick and cement), raw materials (fly-ash and soil), interior coating materials (foam [used as a thermal insulator], water-based paints, solvent-based paints and phosphogypsum) from central Turkey, in terms of Bq kg^{-1}, and to calculate the biological damage caused by this radioactivity. Aim: The insertion of ventilation tubes at the time of cleft palate surgery is a controversial issue. We assessed the status of hearing and the middle ear in long-term follow-up after the treatment of cleft palate. The presence of a supernumerary tooth in the nose is an unusual phenomenon and a rare form of ectopic tooth eruption in the maxillofacial region. In this case, the patient was referred to the hospital with the complaint of severe headache. In the endoscopic examination, the supernumerary tooth crown was not covered with mucosa or granulation tissue. In the present study, the clinical and radiological diagnosis of a supernumerary tooth located in the nose is reported.

Tuberous sclerosis is a rare genetic disorder. The diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis requires the presence of two major or one major and two minor features. Pulmonary involvement has been reported to occur in less than 1% in patients and carries a poor prognosis. Complications following cesarean and hysterectomy operations can occur, one of which is ureter ligation. Aims: Urological injuries that occur during hysterectomy are rare but important causes of morbidity. It was aimed to investigate in this case report whether there was any evidence to support malpractice in Court. Case Report: The patient was a woman in her 34^3 week of pregnancy with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) and nephrotic syndrome with renal amyloidosis. Chondroblastic osteosarcoma (COS), a subgroup of intramedullary osteosarcoma, is usually located in the knee region of the body. It is most common in adolescents and early adulthood. COS has similar clinical and radiological features to those of conventional osteosarcomas. A 17-year-old male suffered from walking problems and lower limb pain. CT and MRI revealed a mass with soft tissue density and bone destruction at the level of L5-S1. It was described as \"posttraumatic hematoma\". Aim: The objectives of this study were to compare interleukin-6 (IL-6) and nitric oxide (NO) levels in newborns with culture-proven sepsis with levels in age- and gestational age (GA)-matched controls, and to investigate the correlation between mediator levels and circulatory functions in the septic group. Materials and Methods: Samples for IL-6 and NO levels were obtained from newborns with blood culture-proven sepsis before the beginning of antibiotic therapy and on the 3rd day of treatment. Aim: The precise pathogenetic mechanisms causing thrombotic complications in Behçet´s disease (BD) are still not known. To explain the pathogenesis with coagulation induction or a defective fibrinolysis superimposed on endothelial dysfunction, various hemostatic parameters were studied. Thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI), downregulating plasmin generation and fibrinolysis, is a novel risk factor for thrombotic disorders. We studied plasma TAFI levels in BD in comparison with healthy controls. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the dose-related effects of fenthion on the liver and kidney and the correlation between severity of organ damage and serum butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) enzyme levels. Materials and Methods: Ninety rats were randomly subdivided into control group and 4 study groups. Control group was administered 1 ml of saline intraperitoneally. Study groups received 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg/kg of fenthion, intraperitoneally. Blood samples and renal and hepatic tissues were collected 24 h after dosing and survival was monitored for 7 days.
