Abstract: Buprenorphine has been an instrumental tool in Medication Assisted Therapies (MAT) for opioid use disorder (OUD). For hospitalized patients on MAT, the management of acute pain presents a unique challenge to health care providers. A previous study examining buprenorphine discontinuation patterns on medical/surgical floors found that 11.8% of patients had their buprenorphine discontinued due to inadequate analgesia. Furthermore, none of these patients had their buprenorphine restarted prior to discharge. Discontinuation of buprenorphine in hospitalized patients has the potential for wide-reaching implications ranging from risk of withdrawal to relapse secondary to patient loss during the transition from inpatient to outpatient …

Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine

Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is an epigenetic disorder caused by the absence of paternal gene expression on chromosome 15q11-q13. It typically presents with hypotonia, hyperphagia, obesity, and short stature. Oculocutaneous Albinism (OCA) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by hypopigmentation of the skin and hair, resulting from mutations in the OCA genes. Mutations in MAGEL2, a member of the melanoma-associated antigen gene (MAGE) protein family, often present with features of autism spectrum disorder and arthrogryposis. This case is notable for its presentation of dual OCA2 and MAGEL2 mutations, with an atypical phenotype of Prader-Willi Syndrome. We present a 9-year-old boy of …

Racial And Geographic Disparities In The Management And Care Of Sepsis, Luke Dommaschk Burwell

Nursing | Senior Theses

Sepsis, a severe condition triggered by the body's response to infection, requires prompt treatment to prevent tissue damage and organ failure. The SEP-1 Sepsis bundle, developed by Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), aims to standardize care, particularly in rural hospitals with limited resources. However, disparities in bundle adherence and mortality rates persist, with rural areas facing more significant challenges. Studies show racial differences in care quality, emphasizing the need for interventions to address systemic biases. While sepsis bundle adherence and simulation training are strong indicators of care improvement, the literature review underscores the need for targeted interventions in …

Improving Medical Education Of Risks Of Ai Use In Healthcare, Stephanie Quon, Catherine Ha Jan 2024

Improving Medical Education Of Risks Of Ai Use In Healthcare, Stephanie Quon, Catherine Ha

Health Professions Education

Artificial intelligence (AI) offers transformative potential in healthcare, enhancing drug discovery, data processing, early detection, and clinical decision-making. However, its adoption poses significant risks, including client harm, misuse, automation bias, perpetuation of inequities, and security issues. Effective integration requires ongoing collaboration among healthcare professionals, developers, policymakers, and ethicists to ensure accountability and transparency. As AI becomes more prevalent, medical education must evolve to equip students with a deep understanding of AI technology, risk assessment, and mitigation strategies. Currently, medical curricula fall short in this area, necessitating educational reforms. We propose diverse and comprehensive teaching methods, including case studies, interdisciplinary projects, …

Books, Presentations, Posters, Etc.

Abstract: Approximately 10% of patients with recent percutaneous intervention (PCI) have concomitant atrial fibrillation (AF) and others may have concomitant venous thromboembolism (VTE). This makes choosing the optimal antithrombotic regimen challenging. The ACC published a 2020 decision pathway to guide safe and evidence-based use of antiplatelet and anticoagulant combinations for certain patients. These situations include patients with prior AF on anticoagulation and the need for PCI, patients with new-onset AF requiring anticoagulation in a patient already on antiplatelet therapy for coronary artery disease (CAD), patients with prior VTE on anticoagulation and the need for PCI, and patients with new or …
