Impact Of Injectable Calcitonin Non-Formulary Status On Treatment Of Hypercalcemia Of Malignancy In Hospitalized Patients, Ngoc Nguyen, Pamela Levine, Patricia Leo, Andrew Jarrell

Books, Presentations, Posters, Etc.

Purpose: Evidence suggests there is limited benefit in using injectable calcitonin for the treatment of hypercalcemia of malignancy. Based on this evidence and in the setting of increased drug costs, many institutions have opted to either restrict or remove calcitonin from their formulary. The purpose of this study was to describe the patient populations receiving treatment for hypercalcemia of malignancy and to evaluate the clinical and financial impact of injectable calcitonin being removed from formulary in an acute care setting. Methods: This retrospective cohort study was reviewed by the Providence Institutional Review Board. Patients were identified through EPIC electronic medical …

Books, Presentations, Posters, Etc.

Abstract: Cancer associated venous thromboembolisms (VTE) are associated with higher health care resource utilization (number of hospitalizations, hospital length of stay, inpatient/outpatient medical services) and can complicate treatment of cancer. The Khorana Predictive Model for Chemotherapy-Associated VTE is a validated risk assessment model that determines a patient’s risk of developing VTEs and provides recommendations for starting prophylactic anticoagulation in ambulatory oncology patients. The Khorana Score is composed of various patient characteristics including site of primary cancer, prechemotherapy platelet count, hemoglobin level, prechemotherapy leukocyte count, and BMI. National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) supportive care guidelines recommend prophylactically starting an anticoagulant if …

Titratable, Weight-Based Cisatracurium Infusions For Ventilation Synchrony In Ards, Nanako Miimi, Pharmd, Celine Munoz Jan 2024

Titratable, Weight-Based Cisatracurium Infusions For Ventilation Synchrony In Ards, Nanako Miimi, Pharmd, Celine Munoz

Books, Presentations, Posters, Etc.

Abstract: Cisatracurium is a non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent used for paralysis in paitents with acute respiratory distress syndrome on mechanical ventilation. Paralysis prevents ventilator dyssynchrony and reduces patient’s work of breathing, which decreases the risk of pneumothorax. On November 1, 2023, PSVMC critical care units transitioned from fixed dosing of cisatracurium for ARDS to a weight-based, titratable dosing protocol. A single-center retrospective cohort study demonstrated cisatracurium titrated using train-of-four was associated with similar ventilatory and clinical outcomes with three folds reduction in cisatracrurium dose in comparison to fixed dose strategy. The purpose of this project is to evaluate the drug …

Variability In Perceptions Of Complementary Health Approaches Among Graduate Student Trainees, Delaney C. Bilodeau

Theses and Dissertations

Complementary Health Approaches (CHAs) encompass a diverse range of practices which are often used both independently and alongside conventional medical treatments. Understanding how graduate students training in different fields perceive CHAs is important because these professional trainees will go on to occupy roles as healthcare practitioners, researchers, policy makers, and consumers. This study used sequential rank agreement methods (Ekstrøm, Gerds, & Jensen, 2019) to investigate variations in perceptions of CHAs in a sample of graduate students (N = 416) from 140 possible training programs. Ratings of CHA familiarity, perceptions of CHA legitimacy, and willingness to recommend CHAs were compared …

The Benefits Of Prenatal Education Via Virtual And Mobile Applications Before, During, And After Pregnancy: A Quality Improvement Project, Lindsay Farland

Master's Theses and Capstones

Background: The advancements of technology has led to a substantial increase in the use of pregnancy applications among expecting parents. Studies indicate that a majority of pregnant individuals utilize virtual education platforms for various purposes, including accessing information on nutrition, exercise, baby development, and pregnancy symptoms. Despite the potential benefits, participation in these platforms remains low, emphasizing a need for enhanced resources and engagement strategies. Research shows that engagement with antenatal education through mobile applications can lead to improved maternal and fetal outcomes, such as reduced rates of caesarean births and fewer complications related to hypertension or preeclampsia.

Improving Spiritual Care Competency Among Intensive Care Unit Nurses: Promoting Holistic Patient Care Towards End-Of-Life, Joanne Nguyen, Dana Bagis Jan 2024

Improving Spiritual Care Competency Among Intensive Care Unit Nurses: Promoting Holistic Patient Care Towards End-Of-Life, Joanne Nguyen, Dana Bagis

Nursing | Senior Theses

Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses play a crucial role in providing physiological stabilizing care in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, often marked by constant changes and variability in complex patients. Despite their specialization, the aspect of spiritual care tends to be overlooked, particularly in the context of end-of-life care. This is significant because previous studies have shown that a lack of spiritual care leads to poorer health outcomes, decreased coping, increased depression, and diminished quality of life for patients. This research proposal aims to investigate the spiritual care competency among ICU nurses who partake in spiritual care-based training, with the …

Optimizing Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia Prevention And Education: In Adult Icu Settings, Danielle Gonzalez

Nursing | Senior Theses

Background: Ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) in adult intensive care patient units (ICU) is one of the most common and deadly nosocomial infections today. Studies have identified a gap in intensive care nurse ventilator education and compliance with hospital protocols. Overall increasing the rates of VAP and morbidity. Hospitals worldwide have shown a decrease in VAP rates after inheriting "VAP-bundles''. This includes nurse specific interventions and assessments as a preventative measure. However, studies failed to demonstrate which bundle interventions directly correspond to the prevention of VAP. Purpose: Address all components of education, a nurse’s ability to properly identify and understand the …

Empathy Development Among Undergraduate Health Professions’ Students Serving As Caregivers To Hospice Patients, Kelly Melekis, Carol S. Weisse, Emma Phillips, Claire Slattery

Health Professions Education

Although empathy is considered a core competency for healthcare providers and has been shown to play an important role in improving patient outcomes, empathy development while working with dying patients is not well understood and may present challenges during clinical training. This qualitative study explored empathy development among 24 undergraduate health professions students participating in an experiential training program where they served as caregivers providing bedside care to hospice patients. An exploratory case study design was used to assess empathy development as expressed via responses to a series of questions and vignettes prior to and upon completion of the training …

An Uncultivated Skillset: Emotional Intelligence In Healthcare Profession Students, Molly Taylor Jan 2024

An Uncultivated Skillset: Emotional Intelligence In Healthcare Profession Students, Molly Taylor

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

Burnout and social isolation have become critical threats to optimal health and well-being, with detrimental effects specifically impacting healthcare profession (HCP) students and providers. The US Surgeon General has labelled burnout a crisis in the health workforce and named loneliness an epidemic with profound consequences for mortality and collective longevity. HCP students are heavily and disproportionately affected by stress and burnout compared to their peers, resulting in negative consequences on academic performance, mental health, empathy, and compassion satisfaction. Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a learnable skillset shown to protect against burnout and enhance relational skills, well-being, personal and professional satisfaction, and …

Key To Success: A Comprehensive Examination Of Support Personnel In School-Based Speech-Language Telepractice, Hannah Douglass Jan 2024

Key To Success: A Comprehensive Examination Of Support Personnel In School-Based Speech-Language Telepractice, Hannah Douglass

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

In the school setting, the telepractice team primarily consists of the clinician and a support person known as a telefacilitator. Though telepractice is an accepted method for delivering school-based speech-language therapy, many barriers to the integration of telepractice as routine care persist. A major barrier is clinicians' acceptance of telehealth. However, there has been limited investigation of factors that influence clinician acceptance. Another barrier is related to support personnel. Telefacilitators have been shown to be an integral part of the telepractice program. Yet there are significant gaps in knowledge regarding the roles and responsibilities, staffing and management, and barriers/facilitators to …

The Nature And Validity Of Implicit Bias Training For Health Care Providers And Trainees: A Systematic Review, Nao Hagiwara, Conor Duffy, John Cyrus, Nadia Harika, Ginger S. Watson, Tiffany L. Green

VMASC Publications

The number of health care educational institutions/organizations adopting implicit bias training is growing. Our systematic review of 77 studies (published 1 January 2003 through 21 September 2022) investigated how implicit bias training in health care is designed/delivered and whether gaps in knowledge translation compromised the reliability and validity of the training. The primary training target was race/ethnicity (49.3%); trainings commonly lack specificity on addressing implicit prejudice or stereotyping (67.5%). They involved a combination of hands-on and didactic approaches, lasting an average of 343.15 min, often delivered in a single day (53.2%). Trainings also exhibit translational gaps, diverging from current literature …

The Unequal Distribution Of Social Risk For Black Men Across The Life-Span. A Novel Framework., Waleed Y. Sami Jan 2024

The Unequal Distribution Of Social Risk For Black Men Across The Life-Span. A Novel Framework., Waleed Y. Sami

Adultspan Journal

This conceptual overview offers a comprehensive overview of systemic pathways that negatively impact the mental health of Black Men throughout their lives. Our argument highlights the importance for counselors and mental health professionals to utilize a thorough social risk assessment that considers these pathways in order to effectively address the mental health needs of Black Men while fostering positive working relationships. This overview strongly advocates for the use of context and structural determinants when evaluating mental health symptoms. Without an appropriate understanding of social risk and determinants, counselors may inadvertently perpetuate disparities by decontextualizing symptomology, and reproducing racist discourse.
