Exploring Body Composition And Sexual Behavior In South Texas College Students, Soyoung Kwon, Shannon Shen

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

In this exploratory study, we examined the understudied relationship between body composition and sexual behavior among freshmen college students, addressing a gap in empirical research. Our sample consisted of 217 nonclinical college students recruited from a university in the southwestern United States; a majority of the students were Hispanic (70%) and freshmen (95%). Using multivariate logistic regression, we explored associations of body mass index, body fat percentage, and fat mass index with sexual behaviors. More than half of the participants were either overweight (22.5%) or obese (30.4%), and nearly 70% fell outside the healthy range of body fat. Results showed …

Implementing Bedside Shift Report In The Home Health Care Pediatric Setting, Ruth Elena Ramos-Ardila Nov 2024

Implementing Bedside Shift Report In The Home Health Care Pediatric Setting, Ruth Elena Ramos-Ardila

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Developing and maintaining good communication is central in nursing because the goal is to achieve the best outcomes for the patient. In the past, written handover reports have been the standard way nurses communicate with each other, especially in the hospital and in home-based practice. Despite this rationale, this approach has considerable weaknesses: its high risk of mistakes and misunderstanding could negatively influence patient outcomes. In light of these concerns, this project examines the role of bedside shift reports in pediatric home care and the patient readmission rate. This project employed a quantitative, cross-sectional research approach involving 32 pediatric home …

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are an effective immunotherapeutic approach for cancers affecting the lung, skin, kidney, mammary gland, or certain hematologic malignancies. Regarding the prognosis of these oncological conditions, treatments with ICIs open new therapeutic perspectives with benefits for both patients and healthcare providers. A drawback of immune checkpoint inhibition is the occurrence of immune-related adverse events that can involve a wide range of organs, such as the liver. Given widespread usage of immunotherapy, the number of patients who suffer from this unwanted condition has increased. Hepatopathy induced by ICIs can be severe and can even lead to death. Detecting …

Enhancing Patient Safety: The Role Of Interdisciplinary Teams In Reducing Blood Culture Contamination, Austin Patrick Eisenberg, Fady M. Awad, Brian Watson, Mohammed Faris

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Background

Blood cultures are vital to diagnostic workups among many hospitalized patients, providing valuable information about bloodstream infections (BSIs), which cause roughly 250 000 deaths annually between North America and Europe. Despite advances in health care, blood culture contamination remains a substantial problem, with deleterious effects on patient mortality, patient and hospital costs, and microbial resistance. This article reviews the repercussions of blood culture contamination on the health care system and delineates evidence-based strategies to decrease contamination rates.

Methods

To reduce blood culture contamination rates, our health care facility undertook a quality improvement initiative. A task force was created, consisting …

Journal of Applied Disciplines

Interprofessional healthcare teams are essential for meeting the needs of our older population. To prepare for interprofessional collaboration, educational programs should offer opportunities for interprofessional education. We created a four-hour geriatric interprofessional workshop addressing cognition, macular degeneration, dysphagia, home safety, fall risk, and pharmacotherapy to examine student perceptions of working in interprofessional teams and their attitudes toward geriatric patients. Participants included 189 second-year medical (MD) students, 41 first-year occupational therapy (OT) students, and 36 second-year physical therapy (PT) students. We utilized a sequential explanatory mixed-method approach. Data analysis comprised descriptive statistics, paired t-tests for the pre/post surveys, and inductive content …

Implementing Online Educational Modules To Introduce Specialty Disability Care To Students In Undergraduate Nursing Programs, Keegan Brunner, Molly Helton Oct 2024

Implementing Online Educational Modules To Introduce Specialty Disability Care To Students In Undergraduate Nursing Programs, Keegan Brunner, Molly Helton

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

In 2016, 1 in 4 adults reported living with a disability in the United States; however, few nursing schools include education about how to best care for these individuals in their curricula. Studies have found that when nurses and other healthcare workers have better attitudes toward patients with disabilities, it leads to better health outcomes. The literature suggests that education and exposure are the most effective ways to increase positive attitudes toward disabled communities. This study offered Equity Access modules titled “Disability and Healthcare” and “Accessibility” developed by Duquesne University to pre-professional health students planning on pursuing Nursing degrees at …

Introduction: Education on social determinants of health (SDH) aligns with national standards for medical education. However, there are minimal existing resources targeted to medical students specific to the care of the pediatric population. We designed a case-based curriculum on SDH for third-year medical students on their pediatric clerkship to address this deficit. Methods: Third-year medical students on their pediatric clerkship received a case-based flipped classroom educational series on SDH in four 10-minute segments. Students completed voluntary and anonymous surveys delivered via an electronic survey tool before and after completion of the curriculum. Surveys were a self-assessment of knowledge and skills …

Journal of the Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet

Health systems built on Western philosophies of health are not culturally safe for First Nations people. Cultural competency courses developed for Australian health services tend to be a single event and fail to achieve real reflexivity and shift to culturally safe service provision. This study aimed to implement and evaluate a pilot training program on Cultural Safety and Capabilities, delivered to health professionals in the burn services at a tertiary paediatric hospital. An interactive program using Indigenous learning processes was developed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers in partnership with line-managers from the burns services. Evaluation included a validated …
